>>737793402I run Gentoo.
>>737793846I've had issues with Gamescope while on nvidia, Wayland, and gnome. Games won't capture my mouse without gamescope, but launching games with gamescope would lead them to inevitably bork and crash after like 90 minutes. Had to add some arbitrary launch option to fix it. Maybe something is broken on my install, idk. Works now with the right launch option and gives me no troubles. Still was rather annoying to troubleshoot. Took me weeks to find the right solution. Had to add>LD_PRELOAD=" "and I still don't grasp why that fixed it. From what I know the whole preload thing just loads files from a different directory, but that command doesn't even specify a directory, so I have no fucking clue why it makes gamescope stop crashing/get slowdowns, but it does for me.I thought about swapping off gnome, but I cannot stand KDE or Plasma
>>737793402>Linux bros, what's your excuse for not gaming on CachyOS?My games already work on Linux Mint, and I'm too lazy to reinstall Linux just for 2 more fps or something. I mostly play old games that need to be capped to keep them under 900 fps anyway.
>>737793402I'm happy with Arch at the moment.
>>737795339Via Steam?Steam injects its overlay via LD_PRELOAD and also Xalia for controllers on some games I think.Setting LD_PRELOAD to an empty string stops that. But also, you get what you deserve for using GNOME in 2026. KDE also has problems, only the wlroots compositors are sane.
>>737795569I was on pure Arch but switched to Cachy. It fixed some of the things that were bugging me on Arch, but I ended up removing most of it so it's basically just Arch again.
>>737793402I installed bazzite and it works well enough for me so whatever
I prefer NixOS with most of the Cachy stuff (placebo) configured declaratively
>>737795715You done it now boy
>>737793402>aislop anime girl mascot
>>737795783Pretty much just using the cachy kernel roo because it actually helps. Everything else is bloat.
>>737795579Weird. The games I use controllers with I run without any launch args and they're just fine. It's only when I use gamescope that this issue crops up. I wouldn't need to use gamescope in the first place if Wayland could properly capture my fucking mouse, but here we are.GNOME is just sleek and well organized. It also hides shit I don't want to see constantly. I love it for that. Plasma is just a Windows clone, and there are plenty of things I despise about the Windows desktop. So help me God if you say it's an Nvidia driver issue, I will endlessly punch you in the balls. I've gone through this with multiple before. Same driver on x11 properly captures the mouse. Swap to Wayland and not a single game captures the mouse. That's 100% a Wayland issue
>>737795867The huge library of ananicy-cpp rules is helpful. Also not Cachy-specific but sched_ext is necessary.
>>737795870I don't think this one has anything to do with NVIDIA, smells more like a GNOME issue to me.
>>737795976sched_ext is fucking garbage, all you need to do is actually set your system services to idle or batch scheduling.
>>737795870You can try KDE and see if it fixes it, it's not like you can't go back.
CachyOS package builds are a placebo in the vast majority of cases, and on the rare chance I have a valid reason to do so I just compile it myself.

>>737793402I've been on EndeavourOS for a few years and it's treated me well. I started on Kubuntu until I borked my install after fucking up my CUDA drivers.Only thing I miss was a Windows 95-esque theme I had that never got ported to Plasma 6.It's really been a treat swapping over to Linux and watching things become more and more usable in real time, I even started kitting out some old rigs into Arch servers. Once I finish building my NAS and depending on how VR is once the Frame drops, I'll probably finally wipe my backup Windows partition.
>>737793402usecase for cachy over fedora? Im scared of the AUR because of all of the recent supply chain attacks. DNF seems a lot more secure and for good reason.
>>737799603Don't use the AUR like OP. But you should get the kernel at least if you are a gamer. your overall max fps won't improve but your frame rate will be more stable.

>>737802901Care to explain why? It’s not like I’ll lose anything important by distro hopping, but since I don’t know what the meaningful differences between each distribution really is, simply calling one “abyssal dogshit” doesn’t really give me anything I can work with other than the opinion of someone who can’t even use the word “to” in a sentence properly.
>>737803118pic unrelated
>>737802948Literally any. Something Debian based if you want an easy switch and stability, like Mint.If you like to tinker something Arch based. And something Fedora if you want a nice middleground.People put too much stock into the specific distro like they are separate operating systems, all that really matters is the parent, everything else is just what comes pre-packaged with it.
>>737803118I kneel...
>ai slop>troonix
>>737803148Purist autists hate it because Canonical, the ones who make it, are pretty shit. They force snap packs, and ubuntu is always quite far behind in their releases. But it's stable and perfectly fine. If you like it, use it.
>>737803282I see Welp, I don’t really have any complaints. The only guy in my class who seems like he actually knows what he’s doing uses KDE Plasma on Arch so I figured I’d maybe give that a spin in a virtual machine to see if it’s worth switching to. But otherwise, I don’t see any reason to swap. It just werks
>>737803598Arch doesn't just werk until you tell it to. Lots of fucking around with it. But it's light.
>>737803658Ubuntu “just werks” is what I meant. When I was first installing Linux (with the help of my best friend Dr. ChatGPT) it warned me against Arch for the very reason you are mentioning kek. But we’ll see. All I’m trying to do now (besides wrap up the course) is figure out how the fuck to install retro games properly via .isos instead of RIPs, which has proven to be annoying enough to keep me busy for a while. Maybe after I manage to get that figured out I’ll worry about doing unnecessarily annoying shit like trying to make an Arch environment that I can work with so I can become an elite /g/ poster.
>>737803850I know, I'm saying if you want something that just works, Arch isn't it. Even Cachy and Endeavour, which are super easy Arch installs, don't just work. KDE Plasma is really nice though. If you do want to switch without too much fuckery you could always go Fedora.
>>737804009Fedora is what was recommended we install (textbook does everything in Fedora IIRC). I’d already installed Ubuntu by the time I discovered that since it’s what I saw was installed on that lab’s desktop, so I decided I’d give Fedora a spin in a VM instead to see if it looked like it’d be worth swapping to on my laptop.Doesn’t seem like it’s worth the trouble. Not unless there’s a connection between the issues I’m having with game installs and Ubuntu, which I highly doubt.
>>737803850>how the fuck to install retro games properly via .isos instead of RIPsNTA but if you're talking about PC vidya you should install cdemu (you can mount isos manually too but bin/cue stuff needs it to load properly) and run the installer with your launcher of choice (if you don't use any you can add it as a non-steam game), then just change the file path to the game exe after the installation
>>737803598use what works for you but do not be surprised when it shits the bed eventually
>>737804227I tried Lutris first which got me nowhere and now I’m trying Bottles (which seems promising but also like it’s pretty easy to fuck something up).I *think* I already installed CDEMU back in my Lutris days because I needed it for the exact reason you’re describing, but the games wouldn’t run even after the installation was complete. The RIP files seem to work without issue, so I may just be stubborn trying to do things through the .iso route. But it’d be better to figure out how to install via the image file in any case since not all of the older games have RIPs available.
>>737804350I don’t think I have enough of a frame of reference yet to even know what shitting the bed looks like on a distro, kek. But I’ll keep that in mind. My main device is running Windows so it’s not like I’ll lose anything that’d make me an hero if my Linux machine suddenly dies. Whole point of this was to get acclimated to the Linux environment. Not to mention it being a requirement for my course.
>>737804409Maybe the RIP came pre-patched or the cd image is corrupted, it happens sometimes, if they didn't remove anything it's not a big deal to just use that one, I remember playing GTA 3 without music because the fuckers ripped everything out lmao
>>737793402I'm not trans.
>>737804518>Whole point of this was to get acclimated to the Linux environmentIn that case, you should install Arch, even if just on a VM, and do it manually, i.e don't use archinstall. Nothing will teach you Linux better than fucking up an Arch install.

>>737804991Aside from the fact that they never said that, (they said the opposite, actually, that they will do nothing about it), if it's going anywhere it's in systemd which every good distro uses. >>737808459>lintux is good for old machi-ACK!
>>737803148>Care to explain why?Predominant reason is because ubuntu is usually at the center of linux shooting itself in the foot and doing retarded shit. Like when they pushed rust on everything when everyone was fleeing from windows, scaring them off of linux. Or when they added in snappacks, which are unique in that you don't know whats in them, the free and open source community, or when ubuntu put ads in the terminal app. Ubuntu seems to always be at the center of something going horribly wrong.
Because I got use to Fedora for work, and there is no point in learning a new distro if the current one can do it all with some effort. The people always asking for advice what distro they should use should be told this at every turn.It doesn't matter which one you pick. You can put steam on all of them, you can play games on all of them, the only difference is how many steps you need to take before it's functional. At best you're saving yourself a little bit of work, may as well pick one and stick with it, you'll get further by being decisive than by spending 3 months picking the perfect distro.
>>737808380>i7 4770 and gtx 1660You'll be fine. Nvidia dropped support for 10 series cards and older, but 1660 should still work without issues.>>737808459>>737809347Old cards can still work fine, you just have to manually switch over to the 580xx drivers. Arch-based distros can get them from the AUR. I'm sure other distros can do the same or just keep the packages in their default repositories.
>>737793846That's something with KDE isn't it? I have the same issue on both my monitors

>>737800931What's annoying with Arch Is how the AUR is used as a replacement for having a good amount of packages in the official repos. But often when you try to install something via AUR it doesn't even work (ran into that issue earlier with openshot). And then there is the risk of getting some malware.
>>737805491I installed EndeavourOS on a laptop and it has worked fine so far (much better than manjaro). I still run Arch Linux on the computer i am actually using most of the time because i like syslinux (got it to work in eufi mode).

The highest struggle i am having with Linux is old VNs just are a pain to get running. Because the nip fucks used obscure proprietary Microsoft bullshit apis and syscalls. Have got most of them working.By installing the fonts and dx DLLs and C++ redists. But for some reason, a few select VNs used WMV as a video codec for reasons only the nip bugman mind knows. So it crashes when it can't load the codec and most of them you cannot skip the intro vids.
>>737828342Easier to just have a stripped down windows VM. Anything to not dual boot into Windows.
>>737828342Proton GE won't handle it?
>>737828850Problem with that is some of the more game focused ones like Baldrs Sky require 3D acceleration. Something that VMs just do not work with correctly. And i am not buying a second GPU just pass through.>>737829035Mixed results. Some of them do work with it. But others just crash still because of the codec issue. It is mostly about how the VNs was originally coded. Most of the popular engines now work quite well. But it is stuff from early 2000s and late 90s that is giving the most troubble.
>>737829302>And i am not buying a second GPU just pass through.you don't need to. you're working with very old info
>>737829958Interesting.What VM do you recommend for it?

>>737829302>some of the more game focused ones like Baldrs Sky require 3D acceleration. Something that VMs just do not work with correctly.I was able to get 3D acceleration working in QEMU/VMM without too much trouble.

>>737827028I can't get text extractors to work at all. Tried Luna, Textractor, Sugoi, etc. None work. And for whatever reason, some VNs won't detect any input if they ask me to name a character, not even if I use a JP keyboard.
>>737831176You might have already tried this, but I've gotten great results from the sugio OCR, it pretty much just works. Had to do a little fucking around with my multimonitors/kde to get the screengrabber right but otherwise works fine.

Both the built in GTK and system KDE filepicker have problems. I am using a stock Cachy install with BTRFS. >>737841930yeah when you got that many images you're better off learning how to use a local booru engine. i got shimmie2 running locally and it's actually pretty fast and doesn't take up that many resources. unfortunately there's some jank since it the 4chan upload field doesn't seem to have a way to get images from 127.0.0.1 or localhost. i should probably write a few utility userscripts to automate uploads to it as well but i can't figure out its API at all.

I'm glad I started with Arch because it forced me to learn my system, but if I had to reinstall again for whatever reason, I'd just install Cachy again. For things I removed, the splash screen, fish, and Shelly. I also edited my fastfetch to show the Arch logo instead of CachyOS. Honestly, there's not a lot of bloat really. Everything it installs is stuff you would install on Arch anyway just to get the system to work. I have fewer packages now on my cachy install than I did on my Arch install.I really like the preconfigured "cachy-update".
