I just don't like symmetrical sticks layouts anymore despite using them on ps1 and then ps2 at which point I built my first pc and never went back to consoles. Shame they don't sell it in 2 variants, or with a way to switch the dpad and left stick like on some premium controllers.

>Microsoft finally feeling the pressure and hiring competent devs to refactor Windows a'la Longhorn
Genuinely good news actually, they've already shown signs of improvement by delegating a white guy that's been in the company since Ballmer to work on those native rewrites for Windows 11 so I have high hopes and I'm all for it. Competition is good, and unlike the rest of the web, I'm not that jaded to scoff at the idea of Microsoft doing something good for once.

>>
>>737805428
was this the case for the steam deck? they could be taking preorders and deliver the controller when ready
>>
>>737814712
>why are you using a controller for crpgs instead of kb/m?
For basically every game kbm is superior but obviously much more bulky. I enjoy sitting on the couch playing games or playing on my phone and in neither case using kbm is very practical.
I play crpgs on Android using winlator and atm touch controls are in ironically better than gamepad and I am optimistic that this could be a better solution.
>>
>>737814876
I didn't pay attention to the steam deck.

The steam controller is unironically a much bigger ticket item, and there's no way they have anywhere close to enough stock to satisfy demand, they don't know how eager people are for a new controller with more buttons and a sensible layout. I've been waiting for one for 20 years. If they were smart they would've done pre-orders, instead the store is going to crash 5 minutes before like it always fucking does and bots will buy 99% of the stock.
>>
>>737815172
fair enough, i think the controller is a better solution for phone gaming.
>>
>>737805428
>>737806231
just add it to the cart now and be there when it launches

>>
>>737815238
For most games yes but any crpg without good native controller support (underrail I'm playing rn) you basically have to bind your mouse move to the analog stick and it's super aids that touch is somehow 10x better.
Additionally I remember playing morrowind with controller and navigating menus with controller was annoying as fuck that touch controls again were just way more intuitive
>>
>>737815214
I hope Valve doesn't let new accounts buy their controller. Also the accounts that have no playtime. All of this will be a shitshow otherwise.

Actually Steam stats show that only about half of controller players use ones that report as Xbox pads.
>>
>>737818748
That seems absurdly high considering the multitude of cheap 3rd party controllers. So I'd say the other anon is justified by your stat.
>>
>>737818987
A fuckton of third party controllers are included in that as they simply replicate the Xbox 360 controller's protocol and thus show up as one.

>controller can only support one
>>
>>737818748
>>737818987
>>737819179
that's literally what xinput is, it replicates a xbox gamepad
>>
>>737819204
No anon, the HID protocol and the xinput API are not the same. We've been over this. You can have a gamepad throw out whatever data you want and still expose it as an xinput gamepad by writing an appropriate driver. Simply replicating the 360s HID protocol and using its driver is a lower hanging fruit though so a lot of third party controllers opt for that. That's why they commonly show up as literal Xbox 360 pads instead of Gamesaar whatever. They pretend to be one.
>>
>>737818645
>market is for this
PC gamers like options and $100 isn't a big deal for a new controller. Like I barely use controllers but I'll still pick one up being it's unique and might really click with certain games.
I already have a budget 8bitdo controller and their fight stick but let's try something else. It just sucks it will sell out pretty fast and most will not get one until mid-summer

This is trying to fix the problem of controllers being terrible for directing a cursor. That had nothing to do with the input method but the range of motion of a thumb compared to an arm.

Seven screws to access a tray is still way better than something like the PS5 or the Switch Pro controller. Obv Microsoft had the right idea with AA and idk why every other manufacturer insists that it's a bad design.

Though ideally such devices should be using BL-5C batteries. Basically standardized, used in a metric fuckton of devices even today, and plenty of modern manufacturing of these still exists.

Why? It's no different to betteries in any other system except with contact pads instead of being wired on.

These batteries still have the same issue. You can find them, but good luck getting one with a decent capacity.
>>
>>737829090
>t-t-that doesn't count!!!
$10 extra from the regular Pro Controller 2 price on the Steam Controller 2 gets you TMR sticks, 2.4g connectivity, two more back buttons in comparison, trackpads, and grip sensing. $10 extra from the Pro Controller 2 price on the Resident Evil edition gets you some ugly print on the controller faceplate.
>>
>>737832886
>You... prefer wires? Why?
Because I can buy a battery with the right header and swap the wires over. I'm not limited to one pouch size, I can use something a little smaller, let's say I don't mind dropping down to 15 hours of battery life to save 50 grams. The plastic shell for the battery is a couple of grams of extra weight, while I can jumper in something smaller it would be easier to just have a header.

I've finally bothered watching the video, I'm seeing some other warning signs like the back buttons being melted in, replacing those will be a pain in the dick if they snap off.

>>
>>737834220
How is "this is a bad design decision" cope? Have you ever taken anything apart before, fag?

We're looking at a lot of failure points here. Crappy little plastic battery cage, the pogo pins that contact the board, the battery itself. All of these could've been resolved with a standard header and a piece of foam tape, with less to go wrong and a weight saving.

I'm looking at the fucking circuit design now, it's low budget late Sony membrane slop with fucking semi-circle contacts for half the buttons. Those intermittent faults will be fun as hell to diagnose. I was looking forward to this controller, the further I look the worse things get.

Do you not know what a header is? Have you never changed the battery in half of all consumer devices out there in the past 20 years? I mean I don't blame you, you're a retarded child and you probably just throw shit in the garbage long before the batteries die, but man.

>>737835294
From the dogshit video I don't see any other good access points that don't result in me killing the ability to use the stock battery later, unless I clean the pads off. Also means I'll need to solder in every new battery, which again, would've been solved with just having a fucking header like most other devices on the market.

The poor contact design extends to the buttons, which is a far larger problem.
>>
>>737805487
Comfort is subjective. You cannot design something like this that pleases everyone.
>>
>>737835494
>Also means I'll need to solder in every new battery
Not if you solder on a socket, you fucking retard.
>>
>>737835419
Yeah but it won't support the new controller unless it gets updated, which doesn't matter since there's a fork that replaced it. Assuming the new fork adds support for it.
>>
>>737835494
what the fuck are you talking about soldering in the battery for?
they're going to sell replacements on ifixit just slot it in dude
>>
>>737805294
It could be good for fighting games though?
>>
>>737835613
oh did ds4windows eventually grow to encapsulate non-sony controllers?
havent used windows in ages so missed out on seeing any of that
also steam input kinda made it not so necessary but hey
>>
>>737835494
That's your projection, you faggot. I haven't had to throw anything away, and whenever I could, I've repaired my things. Thinking that's wrong seems like the most pathetic bullshit imaginable; you must not have lived through the era when you could easily replace the battery in your phone.
KYS fucking nigger
>>
>>737835663
>just slot it in dude
His whole argument is that the battery is too big and heavy.
>>
>>737835602
>Not if you solder on a socket,
To the fucking 3 non standard spacing large exposed pads, you donkey fucking moron?

>>737835663
What if I don't want to spend 20 bucks on a battery? What if I want to save 30-50g by sticking a smaller battery in? Honestly, it's a moot point anyway, the subframe construction has me strongly reconsidering the purchase.
>>
>>737835752
nigga wat
>>
>>737835816
>the subframe construction has me strongly reconsidering the purchase.
i think you're just splitting hairs and shouting off into the void because you're just really bored honestly
this shit is laughable at best as arguments to try and start so I'll leave it at that lol
>>
>>737835816
>To the fucking 3 non standard spacing large exposed pads
Yes, using wires, you metally challenged semen chugger.
>>
>>737835752
Heavy?
What the hell are you talking about? The entire controller weighs 292 grams, the DS5 weighs 280 grams, and the Xbox controller weighs 250 grams (without batteries). The average weight of most decent controllers is between 200 and 300 grams.
>>
>>737834945
>ds4windows has been dead for a year.
What happened? I know there was a fork from ryochan7, but it's now deleted.
>>
>>737835976
nothing happened

>>
>>737835892
>i think you're just splitting hairs
Come on man, you're the expert in controller design, tell me why carbon pads with a plastic backing relying purely on pressure are a good replacement for a ribbon cable. Tell me why having only half the buttons be correctly designed with interlinking contacts, and the other half being designed with semi-circles is actually a good thing.

>>737835920
So now I have a flimsy connector I've got to hot glue into the case because they couldn't design the board right and use a standard battery? That's going to be proud of the board where the battery should ideally sit? Man, you're a real fucking genius.
>>
>>737836073
how about you tell me why its bad lol
looks fine to me and the engineers at Valve think so too
all of the reviews and teardowns also seem to agree that they did a great job
the greatest even
>>
>>737836073
Like you'd magically find a battery which wasn't made for the Steam controller, yet would fit perfectly anyway?

There is an old version, 3.3.3, when ryochan7's github was still available there was version 3.9.9 which I downloaded a long time ago.

Windows 1.0 was a pile of dog shit too
>>
>>737836182
>how about you tell me why its bad lol
The front buttons rely on the board being held to the front of the case with a couple of screws. Not a ZIF, not solder joints, board contacts being pressed against a membrane. This is the kind of dogshit design only a retard would come up with, and only to save costs. It's the modern Sony design, which is as bad as controller design gets.

>all of the reviews and teardowns also seem to agree that they did a great job
Oh, well the guys paid to say it was great said it was great, that's all I need!

>>737836184
Yes? Any battery smaller in dimensions than the stock one would fit fine, they're all the same voltage.
>>
>>737836531
>which is as bad as controller design gets.
yet seems to do the job fine and has done for years if Sony does it?
people love those controllers are were harping on this one for not having features it has oh nyooo!
>the guys paid to say it was great
lol
really grasping for straws now
>>
>>737836531
>Any battery smaller in dimensions than the stock one would fit fine
And you are you going to keep in in place?
>>
>>737836625
>yet seems to do the job fine and has done for years if Sony does it?
Sony controllers have some of the highest failure rates around. Microsoft are a close second, but their buttons don't fail, it's mostly trigger and shell issues. Nintendo are the best, but they do some really fun anti-consumer stuff like making screws out of paper so they strip if you look at them funny.

>>737836735
The magic of foam tape, used in 90% of battery applications. It's not hard to keep a battery from moving around.
>>
>>737805294
>doesnt work on pirated game
im good, sticking with my ps4 controller
>>
>>737836906

But it's hard to keep a PCB socket from moving around?
>>
>>737837148
>But it's hard to keep a PCB socket from moving around?
Yeah, a small hard plastic thing is harder to lock in place in a way that is easily removable later than a large pouch with a lot of surface area to take advantage of. I would just solder a battery.

It literally was. Steam deck went on sale and was sold out in minutes, for years. I remember because I went to take a shit and they were sold out.

its going to take a modder 5 minutes to add xinput, why doesnt Valve just do it themselves?

>>
>>737841943
Doing it themselves opens them up to complaints from people about why half of the controller's features don't work in that mode. Letting someone else do it means it's not their problem and people getting the unofficial drivers know what they are getting into.

>>737805294

Valve can go fuck themselves

prices vary based on what you get and here you get a lot
you should've figured out why everyone was praising this thing months ago, you shouldn't be surprised
