Joey's arc is partially about how far luck can push you through card games. His dad was a degenerate gambler and that's really all Joey had to go with besides his knuckles. So many of his games involved coin flips, roulette (sometimes Russian), and dice rolls. Losing to Marik was part of that. His luck finally ran out after getting to a position he really had no right being in.

Sacred Cards and Reshef of Destruction use their own rules, but are still close to the TCG. Reshef is like if testicular torsion was a video game, though. The "Actually Tolerable" patch is a must. Sacred Cards has the opposite problem of being too easy, but a first playthrough shouldn't be hurt too badly by that.Tag Force covers GX and 5Ds and has a lot of games, though you can start at 2 or even 3. World Championship 2011 is also 5Ds, I recommend it after Tag Force 5. Legacy of the Duelist is incredibly low effort, but if you want to fuck around and get a refresher for the whole franchise, it's there. There's some mods that make it better.

The design shift is insane to me though, like look at how Tea and Alexis are designed, and fucking Akiza looks like she's an adult in her early 20's...all the characters in 5D looked much older to me.
