Why do I like the original Pokemon so much?

Nostalgia. They were unironically worse games even compared to the shitty switch launches. It's fine that you do no one is forcing you to switch games.
>>
>>737844123
It's the most thoughtfully and carefully designed game they ever made, despite the glitches and bugs.
It's obvious when you play it.

It was something you played back when you were happy. So seeing it reminds you of back then.

I've never played Excite Bike. Is it good?

Absolutely no.
Gen 1 was a pure passion project from Tajiri, from Gen 2 it became a soulless corporate franchise
>>
That's not the original. This is literaly rev3.
>>
>>737847178
It was never a passion project you stupud faggot. It was ALWAYS meant to be an IP to drain money out of kids. Nintendo quite literally spent millions to ship it world wide. You can stop trying to push this retarded narrative you read on reddit.

Autism, probably.

Maybe after Miyamoto proposed the two versions, but it was born as a pure passion project.

they actually do have their own version of that though. it's slightly different but it mostly works the same way

DQ steals designs from Japanese folk lore, the same place Pokemon does.

What happened to Claude Plays Pokemon anyway? I see the stream is offline. Was AGI achieved?

>Simple and direct gameplay
>Short and sweet

>The great pokemon designs

>The sprites have a weird and unique art direction
>The infamous missingno glitch
>The pokemon trading/battles with your friends of that time
Pokemon 1gen and 2nd Gen are probably the best pokemon games you will ever play, because the formula is at its purest, and because gen1 and 2 has the coolest pokemon and characters in the series. Yes, these games are tied to a franchise that lost its way, but these two pokemon games came from the era where the Pokemon franchise was at its freshest and at its most creative.
Im pretty sure (You) still keep a pokemon red rom on your phone or your handheld emulator, and still play it from time to time.
>But muh balance
Perfect Crystal and Pure RGB fixed that.

Pretty much the whole game is urban. It's an adventure that feels like it could take place in your backyard. Other games, even gen 2, are way more about trekking innawoods and other natural places.
>>
>>737844123
I think gen 1 designs are the best. When gen 2 came out I took one look at it and thought, "What the Hell is this shit?" Gen 1 Pokemon don't feel like they're trying to look aesthetically pleasing, they just exist. Then all of a sudden everything is cute or cool and it feels like pandering.

Like no one would look at that fucking Pidgey and go, "OH MY GOD, I LOVE IT SO MUCH!" but that's precisely what makes me like it. Even the cute gen 1 Pokemon look kinda' janky, they're not walking mascots, they're animals. Just compare starters from each gen. Gen 1 sticks out like crazy.

it has a clear high quality vision that it executes on perfectly. man wants to make a game about the excitement of going bug hunting, an act of exploration and discovery that is innately appealing to kids. the world you explore is one that balances right on the edge of familiar and alien in a way that naturally aligns with a child's imagination; charizard is an excellent example. as a starter, you get charmander, who is mostly just a little lizard guy. Kids are familiar with lizards, it's feels natural that you might catch one and bring it home. That it might grow up to be a dragon is equally natural as a direction of daydream.
The plot of the game is also naturally within the realm of normal playtime imagination, switching intermittently between competitive fighting and cops and robbers. It never drags you along to anything, simply exploring at your leisure leads you through the natural progression of the game. The typing system is simple, but presents the kind of puzzle that kids delight in, and that makes overcoming obstacles feel rewarding.
Like, genuinely, it's just a very tight, focused game. Legitimately one of the all time great pieces of design
>>
>>737848695
with gen 2 i think you can justify this on the basis that it really is a direct sequel to the first games. it makes sense for your second game to just be a straight up iteration where you can add all the stuff you wish you'd done the first time around, and execute on all the lessons you learned.
gen 3 really has no excuse though, masuda was just terrified of fucking up and didn't know what made the series so popular, so he just cargo cults it

Masuda and company spent al their savings and risked it all for glory and fame. It is literally documented, you just can't deal with it. If it didn't work, they would have ended homeless.
>>
>>737848695
How can I add this to my game?
>>
I wish my brother didn't steal my pokemon games from that era. I'd be playing them right now on original hardware.
>>
>>737844123
Simplicity, would be my guess.
With the original games you very much knew what you had to do to get a good team together.
Subsequent entries just added unnecessary bloat.

i don't really agree with this, for all that the focus on the competitive scene destroyed the single player jrpg aspect of the series, the more complex battling system is undoubtedly fun. when it gets used in romhacks that really take advantage of it, it can create some very fun gameplay

Confirmed as passion project then.

I own every GBA pokemon game. I bought them for like 30 bucks in 2010. Now they're worth HUNDREDS. I'm anything but poor.
