Pixel art and low poly are the only inherently gamey video art stylesAnything else is a moviegame
Agreed
What about.. both
>>737845605This game is peak "vibe JRPG" game, the last time I felt like that was Astlibra Revision.Such an underrated game.
i could really use some scifi lowpoly...spaceships, corridors, colonies, that kind of stuff
>>737844932I too like games that actually look like video games.
>>737846245Was a very slow burn for me. Took me several years to appreciate what it did right because I was getting hung up on design quirks I disliked. Very comfy.
We must go back.
>>737849841That looks insane in 2026, can we still even do this?
>>737850323I'm not really sure.
Does wool count as low poly? Or is it low thread count?
>>737844932Name?
>>737844932PS2 was peak
>>737850323Sonic Mania did it just fine
i really like hd-2d
>>737850323yeah, scanline scaling ("mode 7") isn't too hard in pixel shaders, and the water is just scaling a uv offset based on vertical pixel coordinatesthe scrolling cloud sprite is drawn in perspective, or you wouldn't get this effect where they actually seem to have height/depthas always, artistry>technology
>>737844932sprites are simply not viable. they just don't scale with game scope. you need to redo a sheet every single fucking time something changes, and angles are fixed
>>737852565Then just wait until you've finalized everything with temp assets and only then move on to final sprites
>>737852565same could be said about classic hand-drawn cartoons vs CGI, and still most people agree that the classics look way better. It's just not feasible to use those tactics anymore since the market got flooded with mass produced garbage.
>>737853071great, then you try adding a swimsuit costume and... your per-character budget just almost doubled>>737853147>same could be said about classic hand-drawn cartoons vs CGImost nucartoons are hand-drawn, then colored digitallyCGI animated movies are more expensive than cartoons because they waste money on shit like retards who insert hair strands individually on fur and mocap actors. it'd be cheaper to produce something like cinderella than CGI garbgo
>>737850060The graphics in that game have always stuck out to me. It was just such a good style. Even though Trap Master is probably the least memorable of those guys to me.Starlight Duke or Fancy Mel though? Those are for some reason burned into my memory.
I posted 3 AI gens ITT and nobody even noticed. You nostalgiakeks are hilarious.
>>737846245You should play the first 2 Lunar's and Skies of Arcadia. They have similar tone. (IE heavily influenced by 80s ghibli movies and Anno's Secret of Blue Water: Nautilus Story.)
>>737849841We can't because pixel art and low poly looks awful on modern televisions.
>>737853408That's interesting, I might be wrong then. My reasoning was always that the barrier of entry got so low that the market got flooded with crap, and that is why high effort cartoons disappeared. I can't find the tom and jerry cartoon example, but how do you explain that the quality got so much worse at the same time as technology also shifted. Is it just a marketing thing that they feel they have so much brand recognition that they can tank their quality and still sell, or that quality was never a selling factor?I still can't quite piece together why everyone would go for more expensive AND worse quality. I'm sure that the highest level fidelity CGI is costly, but lowest entry level must still be cheaper than hand drawn right?
>>737854120AI sources it from actual games retard
>>737854458>lowest entry level must still be cheaper than hand drawn right?it all depends on how sloppy of a job you can tolerate and how much you cheap out. at the low end cgi is generally cheaper, but it does look jarring and janky
