I love star ocean 1 and 2 so much.
>>
I am nostalgic for SO1 quite a bit, it's basically my FF6 or DQ3. SO2 is probably the best JRPG ever made though, everyone should play it.

Same brother. But mostly SO2.
Real shame the anime never got finished yet low tier isekai gets 6 seasons these days.
>>
Never played 1 but I played the original 2, Last Hope and Divine Force. All of them are great I’m glad the series seems to be picking up steam. 2 has some retarded deep skills and shit, it’s fucking awesome. DF is fucking gorgeous and the story is wonderful. The next game they release I’m preordering, although I haven’t played the remakes yet since the originals are still fresh to me
>>
When the fuck are they remaking Blue Sphere?
>>
I also really like the English dubbing for both the psp games.

Why was the Star Ocean 2 remake one of the best remakes of all time but then immediately memoryholed?

I love Star Ocean 2 as well, one of my personal top 10 games.
I think that every other Star Ocean game ranges from mediocre to genuinely fucking terrible.
>>
>>737854535
How was it memoryholed? Agreed though, they didn't censor anything and basically all of the changes were improvements unlike most remakes we get these days
>>
>>737854535
Star Ocean's not exactly a crazy popular series. It came out, the people who liked Star Ocean played it and enjoyed it and moved on.

Did you play the original when it came out? Was it your first SO game? Everyone praises the third game but usually when it's their first entry into the series.

Yea compared to the original and R its lacking but remember they actively animated those so cant be too detailed

I like how in the original you can basically see all the characters personalities through their portrait art.

Overall though Id say R is definitely the best artstyle yet when you factor in everything and Id love for that artist to just be THE star ocean character artist going forward
>>

NTA, I played SO2 as my first Star Ocean game when it came out on PSX. Or, not exactly when it came out, but at some point it was one sale for $20 or something at Gamestop (or Funcoland back then maybe?) and I got it while PSX was still the current console.

I didn't like SO3 as much as SO2. I love SO2, but I only just kinda liked SO3. I don't think it's anywhere near as good, and I remember people shitting on the twist. Which is the same twist that E33 has, btw, but when E33 does it we're supposed to universally praise it and talk about how philosophical it is. Games have fallen so far that pretty much everyone agree SO3's twist was shit, then 20 years later when E33 does everything thinks it's genius.
>>
>>737853726
Anamnesis ending service is still the single biggest crime in video game history
>>737853848
>>737855054
PSX absolutely nailed Rena's appearance as a 17 year old, and then for some reason they decided she should instead look like she's 8.
>>737855090
E33 at least has the decency to be self-contained, compared to SO3 retconning an already established and beloved series.
>>
>>737854535
There's too much it does wrong to be considered one of the best remakes. It's good, but I've since gone back to the original.
>>737855090
Only retards got mad at 3's twist.
>>
>>737855425
What does it do wrong? It literally improves on everything.
>>
>>737855425
>Only retards got mad at 3's twist
Disliking and making fun of something, perhaps rolling one's eyes, is not the same as getting mad at something.
>>
>>737854535
I honestly still need to play it. I still feel a bit sour about getting hyped about SO2 from what everyone said but being severely let down by the combat.
>>
>>737855090
E33s twist fit thematically. In SO3 it was just like "lol youre in world of Warcraft now tike to kill the devs". It was almost comical.

Not the original PSX release, but my introduction to Star Ocean was pic.
Tried out SO3 and didn't like it as much, then the twist at the end made me hate it. Haven't really liked any other SO games that I've tried out. Heard some nice things about SO6, but after SO5 I've just been done with the franchise (with the exception of the 2 remake of course).
>>

/v/ hates it because it's HD-2D.

I like precis as a character but having a mechanic inventor really shatters the immersion of a being stranded on a primitive fantasy planet

You're butthurt because I described you. It's okay. 20 years ago, you would have realized how bad Act III is, but gaming (and the world) has become so shitty that you bend over backwards to praise it. You might even call it philosophical or deep.
>>
>>737858871
I was alive during star ocean 3 twist and it was laughable slop at the time. It unironically deserved the hate. E33 did it way more tastefully, it isnt even funny.
>>
>>737859337
The redpill is that the twist in each game is the same twist and that they are both laughable slop. (You)r particular tastes just got shittier since then.

It's true. E33 you always knew something was weird about the world and the player didn't have the full picture so to speak. Star Ocean 1 and 2 came and went with basically no reference to it being a video game for someone else, it's like they chose suddenly in 3 to pull an M. Night Shyamalan which threw poo all over the beloved second installment.
>>
SO2 was the first game I ever played with autistic paper strategy guide fodder crafting and it being the first it was still fun and exciting
>>

>>
>>737861309
The entire point of the twist in 3 is that it was all real and mattered.
You got filtered by babby's first philosophical conundrum.

I accept you got filtered
>>
>>737861309
You can tell with star ocean it was a twist for the sake of a twist. It was terribly executed. Whats even more funny is it retroactively ruined every other previous game and also future games with it. And it was never mentioned again kek.
Good to see a more competent and tasteful spin on the concept in a vidya, even though it took 2 decades.

The reality is that the twist is SO3 was foreshadowed and that it and E33 both have the same twist and it's literally not any different at all, but 20 years ago we made fun of SO3 and both people and media have degraded so far that the official narrative is that we're all supposed to pretend like Act III of E33 is the most profound thing that has ever happened in gaming when 20 years ago people would have correctly been able to tell that Act III is trash.
>>
>>737861309
The problem in S03 is it was the 3rd installment of an already established series and they kind half assed it. If they were gonna do something so drastic they really had to commit to it.

Also the foreshadowing for it was meh but there were some cool hints like the whole idea of mp death itself being your data being stolen and the replica of sophia but all on all it really shouldve been done better
>>
This thread is somewhere around 80 points.

2R was really damn fun but normal difficulty is a joke, I was ridiculously over leveled and didn't actually spend too much time optimizing my party or anything. I got pretty bored by the end and rushed to the final boss
I do want to play the hardest difficulty next with a flipped party and see how that goes. I really loved the first half of the game
>>
>>737865105
Don't worry, the other two difficulties are just as much of a joke if you put in even a modicum of effort.

Nah E33 did it better. If E33 was released 20 years ago alongside SO3 people still would have preferred it too. Sorry, but no one can take jumping out of a big tv screen and some little kid telling you youre part of an mmorpg in a weeaboo wrapping seriously.

Nor should they. Nor should they suddenly think it's deep and philosophical and the GotYaY when it's a painting.

I love them too but they're objectively mediocre with a boring craft system. The whole second disc of 2 is pure shit, when you get on another planet.
I really like that in both games you have a fast character attacking with short swords: Phia and Ashton. Very cool.

SO1 on a SNES emulator, way back when. Just emulating every single JRPG I could get my hands on.
>>
>>737855090
SO3 is pretty good, and I don't mind the twist. But what I do hate about it is the sheer lunacy of the party setup for the most of Elicoor:
>have Sophia and Peppita early during the escape
>say goodbye to both for the rest of the whole disc
>finally get a full party with Nel, who has some symbology
>be forced to have Adray around
>by the time you can finally get Peppita and Sophia back, they're still fucking Lv.1 (at least you can exploit some good bonus gauge shit with them)

And in the original non-DC version, Nel didn't even have symbology so you basically had no mage for more than half of the fucking game.
>>
>>737867571
I finally played 4 a few years back and was shocked at how good it was, I even liked the characters and story. I feel like the uncanny models and horrible dub mindbroke people or something

My main complaint with it was just how slow getting around was, running around Roak was kinda horrible. I didn't do the post game cause of that but I wish I had now, maybe I'll replay it sooner rather than later
>>737867845
