This could have been SM64 if Nintendo just ditched the damn cartridges.

instant load times > 3% better graphics

What are you talking about? N64 has long load times.
>>
>ditch the thing that allowed Mario 64, OOT, and Goldeneye to exists

Daily reminder Saturn, 3DO, Jaguar, and PS1 couldn't run Mario 64, OOT, or Goldeneye.

>N64 has long load times.
False.
>>
>>737852994
Incorrect.
>>
>>737852931
i dont remember any loading times that was more than like five seconds
>>
>>737853041
It happens, but even 5 seconds is long for a cartridge.
>>
>>737853067
Incorrect.

N64 was more powerful than PS1, but did the cartridge really contribute to its power?
>>
>>737853041
>5 seconds
damn boomers really went through hell huh
>>
>>737853152
>N64 was more powerful than PS1
See I'm not sure if this was the case. By most useful metrics, PS1 appeared more powerful. We're all smart enough to not compare clock speeds and act like that's what defines power, right? No one out there is rocking a 5ghz pentium 4 laughing at all those inferior 3.8ghz ryzen 5's.
>>
rather have the n64's low res textures than the ps1's shaky jittery models
>>
>>737853315
Only badly programmed games had terrible jittering.
Devs who knew what they were doing managed to keep it at a minimum and you barely notice it.

You're actually correct, there was going to be one bingbillion AI generated levels in the game but they had to cut nearly all of them to fit the game on a cart, legend has it that Tall Tall Mountain is the only AI stage left in the game due to how ass it is.

yall probably don't even remember this stage
>>
>>737853187
That's nothing when you remember Playstation games were designed with loading screens between every minute of gameplay
>>

N64 had better hardware, but the cartridge limited games to only 16 or 32mb sizes, so it almost always required highly compressed textures and sound in order to be shipped, which is why almost no game has voice acting or FMVs, and why even though N64 can do linear pixel filtering, in games with pre-rendered backgrounds you can tell they're lower resolution than PS1 games.
The 700mb storage of CDs is why PS1 tends to have bigger games and a lot of media like FMV and voice acting. More quantities of textures can be stored and music can more freely be CD quality. 2 discs can be sold in a way that makes sense compared to cartridge.

The benefit of N64 is that cartridges as they still worked then, are like ready-made RAM with the games on them, which means almost every N64 games don't have loading screens. I love playing Rayman 2 where it just does a fade-transition and immediately spawns the next area, while the PS1 version and PC have loading screens.
>>
>>737853152
If it wasn't the cart then explain to me why N64 had large open worlds while PS1 and Saturn had hallways with draw distances hand lengths away?
>>
>>737854321
Because the N64 is more powerful.
>>
>>737854321
N64 had double the RAM of the other consoles.
>>
>>737852791
Is this a3 or something else? Looks nice.
>>
>>737852791
cartridges weren't the issue, kaze basically proved that Mario 64's code was flawed.

>no, I'm not actually optimizing the vanilla game, I'm just implementing the improvements on my hack
What a fucking waste.
