And something like Star Fox Assault with personal-scale on-foot missions (done well) where you can jump in and out of vehicles is ultimately the kind of direction we should be going towards. There ARE avenues to take for the IP, but it means telling the oldfags who only care about the pre-2000s games to shut the fuck up.

I keep looking at attempts to remake Starfox in the Indie scene and they never quite workThe gameplay is sometimes okay but I'm not sure how you'd really remake the soul of StarfoxI know turning things into roguelikes is kind of passe but I really feel like it'd be a good fit for the sort of run-based gameplay a game like starfox employs, like you do a bunch of stages and fight a bunch of bosses and upgrade your fighterThe real question I keep coming back to is rail shooter vs all range modeI feel like you could really get some good mini sandbox maps going, you could even have weird multiplayer shitI think trying to capture the narrative bent would be hard because Starfox perfectly landed on the thin line between iconic and sincere and slightly cheesy and every attempt to replicate it has fallen either side of the balance and landed on either cringe sincerity or insufferable ironyIt'd also require a really good VA castMaybe a game that kind of works like Deep Rock Galactic would be compelling idfk

No matter if you manage to drag some of the fans in with a story, or drag casual players in with some other flashy element, they'd prefer an RPG or something, or whatever else grows the brand. Granted, even 64 isn't perfect, and some aspects of the later games have merits, but I doubt Nintendo will come back to this series to make a better rail shooter than 64 when most will take even a visual novel over that.
