I knew what Fire Emblem was as a kid because I owned pic related. So when they showed up in Smash I knew what sort of game it was to begin with.It was Earthbound that I had no fucking clue was even a thing before smash.
Nobody knew who the fuck they were, but that was part of the appeal. Same with Ice Climbers. Mr. Game & Watch sort of, because you might've known what Game & Watch was, but Mr. Game & Watch is basically a made amalgamation of G&W games. Same for the trophies. I didn't know who the fuck Stanley was or a lot of the trophies, especially the Japanese ones. It didn't matter, because they looked cool, and I loved reading the descriptions and learning about them.Even Tr4sh had Duck Hunt as the asspull retro pick. Ultimate didn't do shit in that regard.
