Early 360 controllers had the mushiest dpads imaginable.
However, I swear they did something to improve it in later revisions. I bought a wireless black one brand new over a decade ago and I still regularly use it for 2D platformers. It's not mushy like the old wired one I used to have.

It's so sloppy it's basically a third analog stick, similar to how the Wii nunchuck had an analog stick that was basically a d-pad. If you had nothing to compare it to it was easy to get used to but otherwise it had a shit reputation for a reason. The seventh gen overall was a bad time for controllers.

There's only been like 3 good dpads in the history of gaming, most of them just didn't read inputs right, are too mushy, too firm or just broke after some extended use (looking at you hori). Or didn't work out of the box (Xbox series X, 8bitdo, powerA)

There's been objectively only a handful of good dpad designs.

-SNES pad is the goat and lasts literally decades unless you're a romhack speedrunner mariotard
-Playstation controllers up to early ps3, after that Sony designed them to break for more money
-Sega Saturn when new and depending on what 3rd party if you get 3rd party.

For durability absolutely, its complete and utter trash. Which is ironic, because with how its built its actually 10x more accurate down to a pixel over modern controllers. The physical gears in it give you ridiculous amounts of pixel perfect accuracy. It's actually ludicrous. Thats why when people were selling modded steel sticks for them they sold out instantly.

Yeah I had an N64 as a kid and I never broke a stick, but I believe the people that did (especially in Mario Party)
But as I moved on to other consoles and controllers, it struck me that I never found a stick that accurate again. That I could run and land headshots on moving enemies in Perfect Dark *almost* as well as I could in a keyboard+mouse FPS, and I sure as fuck couldn't come close to that with any other controller.

I thought I was imagining it.

Yes, it was pretty bad. As soon as the PS3 got games in '08, I switch over to that console just so I wouldn't have to deal with the 360's horrible D-pad anymore. That and my 360 RROD'd.
