PlayStation 2...soul
Emulation.....no soul
>>737861372Shut up. Shut up shut up shut UP.
>>737861332we didn't need anything more than this
>>737861372>appeal to nature fallacy
>>737861372Emulation is like visiting a soul museum. You're blocked off behind glass, you can see it, but there's a glare, you can't get in close and feel it. You're warded off. There's a guy out front selling viewing glasses to filter the image. The curator insists this is as good as it gets and describes how those in the ancient times would play the games on devices called "CRTs" connecting "RCA" cables and using "The Real Controller" but you're stuck with an xbox 360 gamepad that doesn't even have pressure sensitivity and the emulator literally doesn't support the real controller wtf lmao im serious look it up.In 50 years this may be the only way it can be experienced outside of the rare collector that has these maintained and still working.Where we are right now is still the prime time to use the real thing to understand the real thing before it's too late.
>>737861372This game has been rereleased over five times, on three different generations of consoles.
>>737861625your image uses emulated screenshots though
>>737861332Why does this graphically look better than games coming out today. The lighting, the reflections, even the coloring, all combine into a more coherent image than new releases.Am I blind or something. Am I going crazy, what the fuck
>>737861625I 100% agree with that, even if I consider PC ports to be a "superior" way to play these games, mainly with the fact that you are running the game natively and you can use mods to fix some shortcomings like SH2: Enhanced Edition, or mods for MGS3's Master Collection release that restores a lot of the PS2 visuals. (https://www.nexusmods.com/metalgearsolid3mc/mods/190)I 100% think that emulation is a really valid way to play these games, though! Especially if you are an ultra mega purist, and I think emulation will get a whole lot better overtime, especially when looking at the breakneck pace of how much PS3 emulation has improved.
bring back hardware limitations and force artists to scale down their work to just the necessities. Games don't need to be costing a billion dollars to make. GTA VI won't be more impressive than RDR2.
>>737861731"Sovl" is part of the reason, but it's not really looking at the bigger picture. I think it has to do with hardware limitations that forced artists to really focus on art direction, rather than use visual fidelity to overcompensate for whatever kind of unappealing visual style the game has.Sometimes, hardware limitations can lead to greatness, look at Silent Hill. It's great, iconic foggy look is actually the result of the PS1 and PS2's hardware limitations
>>737861859This but unironically.
>>737862021>actually the result of the PS1 and PS2's hardware limitationsNo, the fog is actually extremely demanding in these games and wasn't a choice forced by limitations but by wanting to push the consoles extremely hard. They made a lot of work making the fog look good, building gameplay elements around it, creating tons of art for it, making sure it always runs smoothly and tweaking how enemies fade in and out of it just right.Turok is a game that uses fog to cover for limitations. Silent Hill is a game that uses it because it's designed around it.
>>737861625unc wrote all that to engage with bait
Just imagine how good SH2 and MGS2 would've looked like if they were made specifically for PC and weren't held back by the PS2's shitty hardware.
I’m glad I experienced mgs2 for the first time on the original XBOX. Looked really good. Is there a setup you guys can suggest so my ps2 games don’t look like dogshit? seriously I’m not even opposed to getting a specific CRT. I’m desperate. every ps2 game I’ve enjoyed has been in spite of the fact it looks like shit. I can accept that on a ps1 or a n64 or something earlier, but the GameCube and the Xbox look really good and the ps2 just doesnt make any sense to me looking like it does when it released. it’s a slop console.
>>737862290This is what high end 2001 PC games look like. MGS2 would be impossible on the platform.
>>737862094Ah, sorry!I thought that the fog was there to optimize the game and hide objects popping into the environment, and not do... Whatever the fuck this is and tank the framerate.
>>737862290If SH2 wasn't held back by the PS2's hardware, I believe it would probably be similar to Team Silent's plans for SH5. It would've taken full advantage of the PS3 generation of hardware to do some daylight horror, with a creepy sunny Otherworld that plays with the idea on how light interacts with shadows.https://silenthill.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_canceled_Silent_Hill_projects#Silent_Hill_3_and_Silent_Hill_5_(Akihiro_Imamura_and_Akira_Yamaoka)
>>737862387Get shaun of the dead vibes from this
>>737862021I think its unreal engine fucking with every game these days. It looks blurry and nothing is ever crisp and clear. PS2 graphics might have low res rextures but the models are clearly defined as opposed to the smudged blurry look of modern games.Art direction is a huge factor too. Looking at OP's picture again really shows how much thought went into the lighting, while modern games rely on raytracing memes.
>>737861332soulless>>737861372then soul
we used to have it all
>>737861621I'll give you a phallus, son.
>>737862360crt or emulation
>>737866242Composite or component?
>>737862373uhh
>>737866995component
>>737861859every fucking game is designed with hardware limitations in mind you fucking retard
>>737862387that is beyond even rdr2 levels of taa blur slop
>>737862373>MGS2 would be impossible on the platform.its been on pc for longer than you been alive.
>>737861332I still can't believe how good this game looks.
How do you even emulate or play the game on pc without the special sensitivity thingy ps2 controller sticks had?
>>737867473nice AI image zoomie
>>737868104>special sensitivity thingy ps2 controller sticks had?the pressure sensitive buttons? you can map them in pcsx2
>>737868205No, i meant pressure sensitive sticks. I have never seen some third party trash being able to emulate is the way ps2 controllers did it.
>>737861859while this is true games wouldn't suddenly look like they're from the ps2. they'd look like modern high poly pbr games with moderately less detail/clutter.
>>737867473nice try faggot
>>737861625>the emulator literally doesn't support the real controller wtf lmao im serious look it upThis was my go to argument for why you shouldn't bother with it but that's actually not true anymore.imo it's still better to get an actual PS2, drop a HDD into it, and then plug it into a CRT but there are adapters that let you plug a PS2 controller into your PC and PCSX2 has a build that works with it.You're still getting all the lag that emulation introduces though.
>>737868205>you can map them in pcsx2I could not get this working. I managed to get ps3 hd collection working emulated but for the life of me never got reliable pressure sensitivity with pcsx2.
>>737868357>You're still getting all the lag that emulation introduces though.negligible.
>>737868338the dreamcast...is SAVED
>>737868357modern emulators have better latency than old hardware. kys retro faggot
>>737862290the entire look of mgs2 comes from the handpainted texture work and lighting the ps2 incentivized.
>>737868541
>>737861625this except replace emulation with being over the age of 30.
>>737861332why ps3/360 couldn't recreate those graphics?
>>737868692modern visual effects, changes how lighting is working, etc.Games like Dragons Dogma 1 were an exception.
>>737868692the seventh gen fell into the trap of immature pbr which in some cases was a downgrade compared to old static fakery like mgs2's intricately handpainted environments. the unreal engine 3 cum film look was notorious.
>>737868802
>>737868636dolphin isn't a ps2 game and melee has dozens of autistic faggots working on improving the actual codebase of the game to reduce the lag of the game. also I'm not gonna kill myself I have too many fun ps2 games to play.
>>737861332I miss baked lighting and great art direction
>>737869163With low latency settings you have 45-50ms with PCSX2 while OG PS2 is always between 50-60ms from game to game.
>>737861859we have those limitations, but like everything now, it's just gay onesshortage thanks to ai, shitty optimization from lazy devs and diversity hires, denuvo, dlss to cover up for the shitty optimization, soon ai filters apparently, everything now is forced on the player to deal with. They have to fork the price for ithe developers/companies fuck ups and incompetence, instead of the other way around, how it used to be.The industry wrote themselves into this corner, a very boring and highly detailed corner.
>>737868523>>737868338I would unironicaly play these games with dreamcast graphics.ps2/xbox/gc and 360/ps3 games on dreamcast would be so cool
>>737869132I had both version and I still prefered the last gen version.Same goes for Tomb Raider Legend.
>>737869602>With low latency settings you have 45-50ms with PCSX2 while OG PS2 is always between 50-60ms from game to gameLiterally where are you getting these numbers? The PS2 doesn't have 3-4 frames of input lag.
>>737868104i have a ps3 controller the emulator detects
>>737868692They could. There's tons of great 7th gen games with fantastic baked lighting
>>737868449Use nightly
>>737861625I played on the PS2, I don't give a shit. I fucking hate playing with controllers.
>>737861731Games nowadays run on realism, so games are either too bright or too dark or have so much clutter, you stop giving a fuck.
>>737868357Yea bro input lag is a real deal kicker when you play those 420i 18fps jrpgs
>>737868104pcsx2 has a plugin for the pressure sensitive buttons and you can either use a ds2 with adapters, ds3 or retrofighters controller
>>737861625what are the games on the mid row (with the ps2 logo) except the dolphin one, and the last one from the last row?
>>737861332>April 30th is tomorrow.>This is the only April 30th adjacent post on the entire board./v/ has fallen.
>>737872750one to the left of the ps2 logo is valkryie profile 2
>>737861372I will play PS2 games in 1080p resolution and I will enjoy it.
>>737861625>"RCA" cables>he didnt get the soulful shart cables
>>737872750Suikoden V, Silmeria, Ecco DotF, Rogue Galaxy>last rowWild Arms 5
>>737861625eh stop being stuck in the 2000s, pcsx2 has had pressure sensitive suppport for a decade now, also in time reverse engineering will replace emulators, purists will still swear by their OG hardware, 200$ component cables, 800$ upscalers and 'soul' while normal people will enjoy the native PC ports
>>737872857REmake in dolphin at 4k is some of the highest amounts of SOVL possible, purists are just salty nobody cares about their thousand dollar setups
>>737861625Are people like you nostalgiafagging hard, are major poorfags who cant afford a decent pc and just cope, or just new age contrarians? I have a working ps2, but it only gathers dust for the past decade since I have switched to ps2 emulation. Yes, I was there when the ps2 got released, yes I experienced the original ritual of connecting the ps2 onto my crt tv and then pick a disc to play, and no ,I dont really miss all that shit. I just want to play videogames.PSCX2 does that better than the actual ps2 in most cases. Hell, some games like SSX3, Predator Concrete Jungle, The Matrix Path of Neo, run actually better on the emulator thanks to the dev fixes. But you are a geriatric faggot who is stubbornly stuck to the "good ol' days", and refuses to find the will to look for the few good things that came with our doomed future.>Youngins are using a GAYBOX controller to play ps2 games on their electronic computers lolIm pretty sure everyone who is using emulators knows about pressure sensitivity and uses a modern Dualshock controller
>>737871000I apreciate how Dice went out of their way to tweak the unreal 3 engine to work with their vision, art direction and lighting of the game. Like Splinter Cell games with Unreal 2. They still used it on 360/ps3 and it looked great, looked better than some unreal 3 games at the time.
sovl
I miss these colour spaces the most.
>>737875417>resi 4>PS2
>>737871000whuuut?! I thought the engine totally dictated the art direction and lighting?!
>>737873492what thousand dollar setups niggy did you really throw away your 6th gen stuff
