This with a CRT monitor is a fucking sick way to play all these. These aren't just pre-configured but also cracked versions with DRM screens removed. Also has launch options for each game to either be floppy/CD versions, different graphics modes, and all of the sound cards to pick from so you can enjoy whatever audio you prefer.

The manuals are pretty essential too. eXo win is also really cool but the really good stuff won't be in it until the next batch which should hopefully cover up to 98/99.

Not really, most of the best turn-based strategy games are post-DOS. Like the other anon said, there is Jagged Alliance 1.

Fallout 1 isn't a DOS game, but don't expect it to be 1:1 with X-Com, there's no shame in using a guide for it, especially since the early game has some autistic pixel-clicking nonsense for some of the dungeons.

>>
>>737885940
>Fallout 1 isn't a DOS game
Yes it is, otherwise it wouldn't have been included in the eXoDOS collection. The original retail release came with DOS support, but the readme file VERY STRONGLY recommended not to actually play the game that way as running it in DOS is very unstable and more crash prone. It was basically treated as a last resort in case you somehow couldn't get it run in Windows.
>>
>>737885940
>You don't need DOSBox for X-Com when OpenXcom is the superior choice
I'm aware of OpenXcom and OpenXcom Extended. I had to resort to playing it when it crashed multiple times when I tried to play it in DOSBox. There should be an option in the settings that automatically disables every feature that wasn't in the vanilla game. It's preventing me from playing a purely vanilla playthrough of X-Com, although I know I should just try to play it in DOSBox if I wanted to do that
>>
>>737889334

Is there is any sound at all, then that was intended.
Soundboards weren't standardized back then so games had to be packaged with different soundtracks for each card, and "the best" is going to be partially a matter of taste (and nostalgia for the version you had). That's why looking up old games' OST on youtube will often return several version labeled "Adlib", "MT-32" or whatever who all sound slightly differently. All those versions are "as intended" and done manually by the artist.

I see, I'll have to look through the OSTs for each board and play around with changing soundboards until I find the one that sounds the nicest for me. Thanks for the explanation, I admittedly didn't grow up with DOS, so I am fairly new to it.
>>
>>737893515
Probably the easiest and laziest option is to just download eXoDOS lite and whenever a game has a more advanced looking option for sound available on the startup, pick that.
>>
I really wish getting games to run at a proper speed wasn't a gigantic pain in the ass of fucking with cycle counts so shit isn't Speedy Gonzalez or running like a slug through molasses. Also fucking with voice acting or weird soundcard setups in some games is a huge asspain. ALSO installing some games is a bitchnigger, some are easy to mount but then you have shit like the cd version of TES: Arena that I can't figure out at all and there are very little tutorials available for it because for some reason very few people seem to give early PC the same love early consoles get.

well diablo 1 is very limited compared to 2 and it doesn't take long to see everything it has to offer, and there's very little reason to go back to after that except maybe once 10-20 years or so. but in some ways it is better than 2 as a contained proper single player experience and it's more atmospheric, and the ui isn't that much worse than in 2 (besides there's devilutionx now) so it's worth it to try out at least once if you've never played it. 3 and 4 are blizz official servers online only drm which i'm not a fan of, at least poe has an excuse in that it's f2p

dune 2 is just a shittier c&c with a clunky ui (ok it has the frank herbert dune universe thing going on if that's something you want) and why bother playing civ 1 or 2 now unless you're doing research on the origins of the series or something, and it's not been mentioned but war2 also isn't that great compared to starcraft because of the almost identical factions (nice cd soundtrack tho but you can listen to it without dosbox)
>>
>>737894864
The first sentence of this post is so reductive and dumb I didn't bother reading the rest of it.
>>
>>737893515
When it comes to midi if you have the option to choose always pick Roland MT-32. It's a midi sound module that was very expensive back in the day, but it now can be easily emulated and it makes a huge difference in bgm if you play DOS games. You just need the proper files for your emulator of choice. Budokan supports MT-32, but you need to select it each time you run the game.
>>
>>737865863
GoG does all of the work for you with all of these games. No point in dabbling in DosBox when you can just get an installer.

>Why not the regular variant?
DOSBox Staging just has more settings that make it easier to play games in DOSBox, including expanding the environment variables so all of the files don't have to be under 8 characters for them to be opened in it. With that said, I wish that DOSBox Staging had an auto option for its cycles. It only accepts numbers and max for its cycles
>>
>>737893515
It's on case-to-case basis and >>737894007 is also wrong. A lot of games past a certain point (around 1993 or so) came with a single copy of MIDI file format music + a wrapper that translated MIDI commands into alternative sound generating/mixing frameworks like OPL or GUS. You'd need to look around on the internet to find out what the "intended experience" was. vgmpf.com is usually a good place to start looking.
>>
>>737895497
well some people are weird and like to watch laserdiscs or vhs when there's a bluray available with the exact same content

>>737895631
midi music in newer dos games was often composed for general midi not mt-32 (a real or emulated roland sound canvas or yamaha xg synth is usually best for the gm stuff)
also if you want to emulate a mt-32 make sure you really emulate it and not a basic soundcard or gm synth in mt-32 mode, a real mt-32 is programmable (instruments can be redefined) while the mt-32 compatibility mode in newer devices only simulates the default instruments

You mean GoG takes the work other people did and puts a price tag on it

I think Adlib Gold was very rare and most games were designed for the lower-quality Adlib OPL2.
>>
>>737896314
shit take, play some more games
>>
>>737896314
with some exceptions agreed (the exceptions tend to be playable without dosbox because somebody actually cared about them since they're good games)

>around 1993 or so
That's toward the end of MSDOS games tho. Shit was starting to have CD instead of only floppies at that point.

Amulets and Armor.

It was even worked on for a little bit in the early 2010s, where it got a multiplayer feature.

I'd probably play more dos games if installing them wasn't such a bitch and finding clean install files wasn't a nightmare. Every repo out there is some custom configuration I don't want or need.

I like playing videogames. I don't like spending 4 hours trying to bumblefuck my way through mounting and installing shit that I don't have even a basic grasp on until I inevitably give up and I can't find any documentation for.

>>737896853
This isn't a problem I can solve by trying harder. I don't know what to do with some games and nobody bothered writing this shit down anywhere.

Then what's your problem with eXoDos? It was literally made for (you).

I can't easily modify it to use whatever soundcard I desire or use it with staging so I can get sickass filters.

Depends on what you consider an improvement.
Infighting exists and can be toggled off.
Dodging applying to the enemies was fixed.
I think in the og. Damaging a monster's stat to 0 wouldnt kill them but could kill the player. And that behavior was made to apply to both npc and players.

Bethesda literally released it (and Arena) as freeware and there's several places where you can get it for free legitimately, like Steam (which also happens to use dosbox)

Would that lead to anime getting better or worse?

Since people were talking about OpenXcom in this thread, does anyone know how to have it play MIDI music? Despite using 1.4 files with OpenXcom, I'm unable to have it play MIDI files and it always defaults to AdLib music
