ReMake. Got it because it came out 2 days after my 15th birthday. Had the homies over and it was hilarious. The first crimson head to pop up made us all freak out like little bitches. My best friend was also my neighbor and his birthday was one day after mine so it was a cool party that year.

I know this is gonna be cliched and generic as hell, but the first Amnesia was the first game that genuinely terrified me, I had to play it with a friend over teamspeak.

Previous to that I had played many survival horror games for PS1 and the like, but none did it for me.

Decent 2 at 8. Nothing as an adult has been scary, games are far too predictable for that. Closest thing to a fear response would just be the stress of a high stakes moment in a videogame. Like doing inferno on a HC ironman in osrs.

It's a safe way to feel vulnerable if you let yourself get immersed in the situation. It's a way to see how you'd react in an extreme situation if you self insert as the protagonist and progressing can feel more personally earned.

Condemned Criminal Origins, I played it without knowing anything about it, completely blind, over the course of two long nights with my headphones.

>>
>>737920676
Voices of the void. I honestly can't think of any other game that manages to get me immersed enough that it lets the scares pay off perfectly. It maintains the lonely atmosphere but lulls you into the mundanity of the work just enough to get you. It's a shame that it doesn't take too long for you to realize that there's almost never any real threat. But by that point it tries to be more funny. I wish it could maintain that tension longer.

SH1 ar age 12, specifically the hospital part where you're bumbling around, exploring, seeing all the looked doors. Stopped playing for a week as i had an honest to God panic attack.

I started playing Condemned for the first time recently and it's the best horror game by a country mile. 99% of mainstream horror games (can't speak to indie) are actually just action adventure games with a horror aesthetic. Even Silent Hill is like this.

But condemned? It's got better horror direction than most horror movies.
AS LONG AS YOU PLAY IN THE DARK WITH NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES.
I just got to the level with mannequins in an abandoned department store. I'm expecting some scary enemies posed as dolls....instead this happens

>Looking diligently for whatever they will scare me with out at the edge of my flashlights beam
>Suddenly hear some bumps that sound like they're everywhere around me...then nothing
>Continue before hearing a voice from directly behind me, dripping with a cold calculating disgust and rage
>"I'm gonna kill you tonight"
>WTF
>continue on deeper into the store
>"You're gonna die"
JESUS CHRIST
>Suddenly hear some kind of air rushing
>It gets louder and louder like it's getting closer
>Eventually realize it's the sound of heavy breathing getting right up next to my ear
>BANG
>A body lands at the foot of the escalator right in front of me

This is just one 30 second section of a level. The game is horrifying and great.

Then the remake rolled around and when you enter that hall and walk past the window all that happens is it cracks. And you're all like "Ha, very clever, they knew we'd expect that." and you keep going down the hall feeling a bit safer since they clearly aren't doing things exactly the same this time around. Which is why they just moved the actual scare down a few windows. The bastards.

Silent Hill 3 had two moments in it the first time I played it where I had to stop and cool off with warm fuzzy shit, and I played it at the point where I was beginning to get inured to horror media. The first was the backroom with the dress form mannequin. The second was the mirror room in the hospital. Both genuinely unnerved me for some reason.

Alright this one is lame as hell and not from a horror game, but I've estimated from where I would have seen it first that I would have been 3, so you never know what random things will get you at that age. At the end of the FMV intro for TimeGate: Knight's Chase, the villain appears in a mirror and laughs, then turns into some red eyes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9HwtRaR5nc
I remember somehow getting a jolt of fear from this. I guess I hadn't seen 3D cutscenes in games before.

Also there's a bit shortly into the game where the player character is stuck in a closed museum, then the security lasers come on, and he drops down low to avoid them and goes "oh my god!". Because he dropped down I thought he was literally on his knees praying to God to be saved from the lasers. Just kind of a funny mental image to me in hindsight.
>>

It's simply the most immersive game genre. If immersion is important to you in gaming, horror is peak.

I was scared shitless of the swamp level in Turok 2 when I first played it. Looking back it was most likely because I was nine at the time and it didn't help that every enemy was a jumpscare in that game thanks to the N64's abysmal rendering distance.
>>
>>737926301
I think FNAF did much more lasting and deep rooted damage to gaming and horror in particular. Streaming was always going to take off in the 2010s when webcams were more readily available at a good quality and internet widely available enough for viewing online streaming regularly. Amnesia was one of the first horror games to get a big streaming following, and it has influenced a few too many games to copy its "no weapons, hide from all enemies" approach without any good game design or original ideas to go with it, but that's a more isolated issue than FNAF's truly wretched babyfication of the genre, launching of a billion wannabee money spinner mascot horrors, and most irritatingly of all, the obsession with fanwikis, "lore" and stupid faux-ARG formats.

It was penumbra until scav/prototype dropped...fuck me that blows all the shit in this thread out of the water.
Amnesia is ok but the older penumbra games are significantly better with puzzles/the setting and the darkness/madness mechanic.
And scav is literally the antidote to all the normie faggot hide and seek jump scare streamer bait games. Ain't no normie gonna touch that lol the worse you are at video games the more your character suffer

When I was a kid I was too pussy to play most horror games. None of it affects me anymore, with few exceptions. Last time I got scared was playing the Scarlet Cascabel thief FM a couple of years ago when I was was 27. Genuinely fantastic scares.

I watch my neighbour play Resident 1 on Ps1 in like the year 1999 and it fucked me up for weeks, especially the zombie head turn cut scene.

Had recurring nightmares of zombies coming to my house

That one SCP game where you go down the stairs. Yes, I was a retarded kid, and that made me scared
>>
>>737920676
SH2. Getting to the prison after the long walk down the stairs in the historical society was too much for me to handle, I had to put the game away for a week before I got enough courage to continue.
>>
>>737936678
I played it and loved it, but I played DS1 as a kid. I think they definitely upgraded the scares (though it still has the DS issue of the music giving away too much) but I'm just not going to feel any fear when I'm holding a giant laser beam that melts every enemy in 0.5 seconds.
>>
>>737936937
There's a game of that one? That's the one SCP that ever scared me. I still think of it sometimes and have to look behind me.

Alien: Isolation, mindless zombies other games throw at you so often can never be as scary as an intelligent killer.

I'm more of an atmospheric horror kind of guy. The kind who prefers Alien and The Thing which builds tension instead of the slasher or the cheap jumpscares most horror movies/games operate on. Peripheral scares and fear of the unknown are also my favorites.

If we're talking older games, then the first >Resident Evil
was really good at some of it way back when.
For not too recent games,
>Alien Isolation
takes the prize and changed the genre in the mainstream
For newer/somewhat newer games,
>Mortuary Assistant
delivers very well
>Phasmophobia
Does a good job at scares when the ghost becomes aggressive but most of the time you anticipate it, so the scare-factor gets boring quickly.
>World of Horror
also delivers on the atmosphere part exceedingly well despite being really simplistic graphically, even if the actual scares are practically non-existent. turning on the "real" aspect ratio in the main menu send chills down my spine every single fucking time
Recently, I've been playing
>Voices of the Void
a lot. I think it's an absolute masterclass and currently the best at building atmosphere slowly, giving you spooky sounds from space to listen to and then breaking it by evoking panic when the monotony is broken with a curveball like something is approaching your base on the radar screen.
I think horror works best when you don't actually expect something to happen, like one minute you're playing a job simulator and then out of the blue a curveball comes even if you know you're playing a horror game.
I can't recommend it enough. Play that shit immediately if you like atmospheric horror.

As for more... "cultured" (lewd) games,
>Sin Spire
does work rarely, but gets repetitive and boring very quickly. It's still an interesting concept in the horror genre.
>>
>>737920676
I've never found games scary in the sense that I feel "afraid" but in recently memory I could see RE9 being too scary for normal people to play at all, let alone finish, there are segments that would probably make people drop the game.

as a kid? Tomb Raider was kinda spooky in the caves I guess
>>
>>737937729
I played Alien Isolation and by the time I was halfway through I just wanted it to be over, I was enjoying it until then but the problem (it's a me problem, not a problem with the game or genre) with hide and seek style horror, is that if you're not afraid it just becomes tedium, y'know? it's obviously a great game and a great horror game but I couldn't get much out of it.

Voices of the Void was quite cool
>>
>>737936678
dead space is just an action game that begins it's action segments with a loud noise, not a good horror experience.
>>
>>737938102
I agree. The overwhelming majority of horror games, Alien Isolation very much included, turns the horror aspect into tedium with repetition in my opinion.
They usually start off strong but then you understand the game enough so it loses any power it may have.
It's why I sing praises of Voices of the Void day and night. I don't know what magic randomizer algorithm they concocted but it manages to always hit you with a curveball when you least expect it. It takes a very long time to "understand" the game the same way you understand any other horror game.
>yeah yeah, alien walks around, I know the pattern, just go and hide and I'll be fine
whereas VotV will keep you on your toes with giving you new things for a long-long time.

I can't play RE2 or RE3 even to this day because I can't but panic when I hear loud thumps getting louder and louder.
If I hear someone walking behind me, making loud thumps and seemingly accelerates towards me, I have to look behind me in a fit of panic. It's like the only trigger I have that makes me lose it.

I have a weird relationship with Isolation and I full-heartedly agree with you two on it getting very tedious.
The thing is, the game doesn't turn just casual tedious, but it keeps the adrenaline spikes for me everytime I know I have to hide from the alien in order to progress. It's like doing very mundane things but my heart is constantly pounding and I feel very exerted afterwards.
It's not fear, it's just that tense to me and I feel very weird about it since it feels like a mechanical switch to make me nervous with a clear mind. Isolation is a physically taxing horror game.

No joke, Clock Tower is probably the most hauntingly creepy game I can think of these days. PS1 graphics are naturally uncanny, but the nondescript nature of the music just fading in while you're trying to examine for clues, and then you never now 100% what mechanic he won't detect next, and how each level is so brief that you haven't memorized its layout as you escape, is genuinely nerve-wracking.

Earliest scares that come to mind were jurassic park on SNES where the T Rex chases you and the FPV at 8 years old. Then later on D for the PS1 was very scary and resident evil 1. Then the REmake on gamecube and I could never play it past the first few rooms.

A few horror games managed to get under my skin over the years, but the only one that got me to put the game down was pic related when I was a kid, to the point I had to ask my dad to finish the last level of Spider-Man for me.
Beyond that, I played through the Rose DLC for Resident Evil 8 for the first time semi-recently, and while I didn't find the baby in the main game scary, the fucking weeping angel mannequins caught me good and jumpscared me more than once by grabbing me when I thought I had enough room to run away from them.

Dying light, the first one, inside the buildings.
Outside you're having a great time clambering over shit and jumping on zombie heads, whacking them with pipes. Inside you're at the mercy of everything and anything, and it's completely overrun.
Just about shit myself the first time I encountered one of those witch-knockoffs.

>20 hours
It's about 4 hours your first time through, and an hour on subsequent playthroughs without cheesing the game.
There's also a small handful of custom stories that are basically the game again, but rearranged. And one that IS the main game, but adds much more randomness. So from the Steam workshop, I recommend
>Survival
>Burial Ground
>Escape the Bunker
