The three games she chooses as examples (Waco Resurrection, Braid, Flower) do not raise my hopes for a video game that will deserve my attention long enough to play it. They are, I regret to say, pathetic. I repeat: “No one in or out of the field has ever been able to cite a game worthy of comparison with the great poets, filmmakers, novelists and poets.”

Why are gamers so intensely concerned, anyway, that games be defined as art? Bobby Fischer, Michael Jordan and Dick Butkus never said they thought their games were an art form. Nor did Shi Hua Chen, winner of the $500,000 World Series of Mah Jong in 2009. Why aren’t gamers content to play their games and simply enjoy themselves? They have my blessing, not that they care.

Do they require validation? In defending their gaming against parents, spouses, children, partners, co-workers or other critics, do they want to be able to look up from the screen and explain, “I’m studying a great form of art?” Then let them say it, if it makes them happy.

I allow Sangtiago the last word. Toward the end of her presentation, she shows a visual with six circles, which represent, I gather, the components now forming for her brave new world of video games as art. The circles are labeled: Development, Finance, Publishing, Marketing, Education, and Executive Management. I rest my case.

If movies are an art form despite being largely about showing tits and explosions with some talky stuff in between then so are games. Not every game needs to be art for the medium to qualify.

Neither kojima, kamiya, mikami or miyazaki believe games to be art. So why should I?
>>

Plenty of games have unique and expressive styles that stand the test of time
Plenty more are just corporate garbage to make a quick buck in the moment
You can easily see the difference, for example mouse pi is corporate garbage and something like fuga is a passion project for the developer irrespective of potential profits.

So you decided to play more "art" games, but there weren't enough tits and explosions to hold your attention?
Skill issue, you are vidya illiterate

i tired a few, they suck unless they have goon elements like wings of seduction.

there was one decent one with heavy focus on rogue like elements. but i forget what it was called.

I didn't read that shit, but the only people who care if video games are art or not are gen Xers whose parents yelled at them for wasting their time playing video games instead of doing homework or sitting around and watching TV with the family.

You ever get that feeling when you're working on 1cc'ing a shmup and you feel a bit of unease over booting up the game for the first time if the day, like what if I don't get better today, what if I play worse? That's the good shit, it's hard to make a single player game like that. I think there are a lot of people who can't deal with that sort of thing, but it's part of what makes me want to play them for hours at a time.

1ccs are not work
if you want a real challenge try learning an actual skill like programming or art

Work is any effort expended to complete a task. If a task is performed recreationally it is play. Therefore games can be both work and play, and are often better for it. Additionally, creating things isn't inherently commendable. Like if you design a shmup meant to be played with analogue controls, the world would have likely been a better place if you had just focused on getting that 1cc.

Being "art" is not an honor. A statuette of Jesus in a jar of piss is "art".
Art is any form of communication of subjective/emotional content. I don't care what other people think, because most other people don't even try to have a solid definition of "art", they're happy to let it be a vaguely defined cloud of stuff they poke through manually every time they try to determine whether something is art.

nah it was a smaller indie game where you select pilots that have modifiers. it auto scrolls from bottom to top.
>>
>>737952832
Based and real take from Boghog.

Faggots feel obligated to hunt for pointless 1CCs and achievements for games they don't even like. It's mentally ill behavior.

The fact is, if a game isn't fun enough to make an average person WANT to get good at it, then it's the game's fault. It's never the player's. This is especially true when life offers so many more gratifying skills you could be getting good at instead (which are also far harder). Difficult video games are basically competing for your attention with every hobby ever, and it's their job to convince you they're worth investing your precious time into.
>>
holy fuck. this thread made me realise that gamers don't care about art

Videogames can be art, but not every videogame is art.
Just like Crime and Punishment is art and porn novels you read at night aren't
>>
>>737961926
>Crime and Punishment is art
lmao
>>
>>737941156
Any definition of art that doesn't use circular logic is going to also include videogames no matter how hard you try to exclude them, this is why the true question is "are they considered art yet?" (spoiler: no, it will take at least 30 years or so for that to be the case for the majority of people) rather than "are they art?"
>>737943554
By that logic books aren't art because some are used to brainwash people into cults, movies aren't art because some of them are little more than an excuse for product placement, music isn't art because corporate jingles are a thing and so on.
>>
>>737961926
Sin and Punishment > Crime and Punishment
you cant even 1CC a book, nerd
