Why are there so few Australian game devs?
>>737993290IQ issue
Maybe because they live far away from countries that would buy their vidya, making exports troublesome?
>>737993290because all modern game development is done by outsourcing to turd world countries for a fraction of the price and qualityBasically our min wage is too high, a few passionate devs are making indie/AA games here though
that upcoming penguin game looks like garbage and the voice acting is garbage
I only know that one studio that made Submarine Titans and Ancient Conquest.
ive played a lot of online multiplayer games over the years and the aus community always complain about not having anyone to play with. this tells me there arent many gamers over there so it makes sense they dont have enough game devs to create anything
>>737993290High taxes or lack of tax incentives maybe? There's some good ones in New Zealand.
>>737994159nah its just that we have a small population and the majority of people play popular games. Australians can also play stuff that isn't super ping dependent, like I play RTS games and PVE games and those seem to be fine even on 200+ping
>>737993290it costs too much
>>737993290it's not close to any major tech hubs like texas, california or london or whatever so they don't have a ton of tech workers and the wages there aren't third world poverty tier like japan and india so there's no incentive to set up a studio like there would be in third world indian nations like poland or eastern yurop
>>737993290Retard country where literacy in maths and computer science are not encouraged while obsession with drugs, cars and sports is
>>737993290No jobs and low wages at the few jobs that exist. Anyone with a tech degree bails.
>>737994394>low wagesStill multiple times more than what they can outsource some jeet to do it for instead
>>737993290What with the extreme prejudice against australian?
>>737993290no opportunities whatsoever. if you're lucky, you could get a job making phone slop that doesnt turn a profit. everyone else goes indie and their game unfortunately goes nowhere.
Police state
They used to make some cool games, mostly in the 90s (Warlords series comes instantly to mind, very good turn based wargames and their Battlecry spinoff were some of my favorite RTS as well). After the 90s it seems something changed and it just wasn't feasible to make games there anymore.
Because there's only 30 million people in the entire country and 25% of them are migrants.
>>737993290they are too busy being conscripted for the emu wars.
>>737993290Where are you even supposed to park in Brisbane
>>737993290>GFC + overvalued currency killed almost all studios from 2008-2014>Foreign investment completely fled until the covid boom (and now it's going away again lmao)>Expensive country to live in>Other countries governments provide extremely generous tax benefits for foreign companies to set up base>e.g. The UK government basically pays a profitable US company to make games in the UK about US culture because lol politics>Australia recognizes that this is just a race to the bottom and only bothers with funding small studios funding and giving very minor tax rebates to tech companiesI'm of the view that you basically have to financially succeed in gamedev while it's a hobby to make gamedev worthwhile in Australia. The amount of time it requires to get funding just isn't worth my time. The other problem is that a lot of the veteran talent had to move overseas during the GFC in order to stay in the industry. As much as people like to pretend Video games are free market, so much of the sector is government subsidized around the globe. And while they claim this is to build a long term industry, the international companies threaten to exit and and honor their threads if and when subsidizes are lowered. It's very difficult to compete when another companies risk is socialized by the tax payer.Anyway that's my opinion from a guy that's trying to make it in the indie space while I work a full time job. I hope to make the scene better but the industry is fucking crooked from global stand point.
>>737994761>Expensive country to live inHow bad is the cost of living?t. Canadian
>>737994721Emus are extinct in Tasmania.
High rent killing every shop in the CBD>For Lease>For Lease>For Lease
>>737993290half of their population is indian
>>737993290Good games are literally illegal to make there.
I'm working on one. But it will proably suck and I'm kinda depressed, also I have a real job.
>>737994878Like canada, frugal people should be able to get by without too much stress. Getting ahead is another question though without parents helping you get into property.Sydney is actually fucked though. Literally the most expensive city to income in the Western world.
Crazy footage coming out of alice springs at the moment
>>737993290Anyone with talent in Australia has to move overseas in order to make the best use of it.
risky investment when you could just buy more properties
>>737995240Hang on to that job.
>>737995137They get a tax write off for leaving it empty
>>737995349Counterpoint, abbos can't burn down your game.
>>737995349FUCK YOU
>>737993290they're all in jail for making characters that look younger than 40
>>737994520envy
>>737993290Spiders
>>737999062what about em?
>>737994520on 4chan? 3rd worlder envy (because the only other people online same time as Aussies are 3rd worlders) and a reputation that Aussie posters on /pol/, /int/ and other flagboards is that we're shitposters, when really that's just how we are. Aussies never take anything seriously all the time and our entire society operates on everyone looking like they're just about to pull a prank on you or call you a softcunt for having emotions.
>>738000521KILL YOURSELF
>>737994520because they keep making stealth /int/ threads like this
>>737995137Yeah this is happening in resort towns too. You know its bad when the economy takes a slight dip, half the businesses close and the only tourists that keep visiting are Chinese.
>>737993290not enough indians
>>737993290too many indians
>>737994520they're just copying moot to try and fit in, don't worry about it
