https://www.gamespot.com/articles/valve-is-forcing-microsoft-to-make-significant-improvements-to-windows-gaming-performance-report/1100-6539703/

>A report by Windows Central details what Microsoft is calling Windows K2. It's not a standalone version of Windows that is meant to replace Windows 11, but rather an initiative that will slowly roll out significant changes to the operating system in a bid to reclaim customer trust and overhaul many key aspects that have become pain points over the past few years.

https://www.windowscentral.com/microsoft/windows-11/what-is-windows-k2-everything-you-need-to-know-saving-windows-11

>"For gaming, Microsoft views steamOS as the benchmark, and is working to optimize the platform so that steamOS and Windows gaming performance are comparable. Within the next year or two, it believes that Windows will be able to truly compete head-to-head with steamOS in gaming performance on identical hardware due to foundational changes that are being made to the platform in the coming months."

>The report doesn't mention any specific changes to the Xbox App, which itself has been redesigned recently alongside the release of the ROG Xbox Ally X, but does note how many core features in Windows will contribute to a faster, more fluid-feeling operating system. These include speed enhancements to file explorer, and a completely re-written Start Menu that will remove ads and prioritize local files and applications during searches over web results.

>K2 is also meant to address system stability, with Microsoft aiming to only roll out system-critical updates that require restarts once a month. It will also give users the ability to indefinitely pause system updates, and ensure that graphics and audio driver updates do not happen during regular use.

Granted the mainstream move to Linux has been in "two more weeks" status for a decade now, but Valve is definitely in a better position to tip the scales than anyone previously. Probably what's needed is a big push to some kind of simple onboarding distro where users can just download and double-click any random Windows .exe and expect to have it run reasonably and seamlessly without having to manually set up or deal with any of the translation layers.

its really funny how they remove ads from the start menu, as if there was ever a justifiable reason for them to be there in the first place
>>

God I hope not. That would just be terrible to the Linux software ecosystem in general. If everyone just downloaded the EXE and ran it in Linux like with games, that just means the death of native Linux apps. At least outside the FOSS community.

I think you're wrong, and if it did happen it would only be in the very short term. It would be a necessary transitional period to greatly increase the userbase until the tipping point.

Anyone already committed to delivering native Linux binaries wouldn't just stop doing that when seeing the number of Linux users grow consistently and rapidly. And anyone not already doing it would be no change. And at some point the userbase would become large enough that focus could shift to the Linux versions, and eventually the necessity of the seamless translation layers would fade.

It would be a Trojan horse, just like 99% of shit pushed by Microsoft.
The 360 controller was also intentionally broken on Dinput, forcing devs to implement Xinput support, which eventually ended up cutting most Dinput support until Valve started forcefully excising Xinput.
By defaulting to .exes, Linux would leave itself open to sabotage and herding(not GNU/Hurding though).

>>738007092
It's not "defaulting" to anything, it's providing peace of mind that less technical users wouldn't have to perform black magic rituals if they ever wanted to run niche applications outside of Steam, and it would only be for that distro or specific onboarding mode. FOSS would be completely unaffected. The biggest negative impact it would have is on the support for those Windows applications they're trying to run, as there would no doubt be occasional issues due to the translation layers. And if they had to waste enough time on those support requests, then maybe that would make them consider doing a more stable Linux-native release, so it could turn into something positive with time.

You sound like the stereotypical grumpy Linux elitist who doesn't actually want Linux to succeed, because it would mean you could no longer claim superiority over the plebs.

For the tech illiterate, it's literally impossible to fix Windows (even if they actually had the expertise to do so) without breaking everything. It's never going to happen. SteamOS is good for its purpose as the Deck's OS (and whatever other hardware they adopted, the Lenuvo one?). But what makes it good for handheld purposes, delayed package distribution and immutability to keep retards from bricking by running commands at random, is really fucking bad for desktop usage. No reason not to pick a normal flavor of Arch with KDE over it, you just install the Steam related packages (if they aren't already on your distro) and it's the same end result.

that said i don't think microsoft can debloat windows enough to compete with steamOS, i don't think they will actually undo a lot of the shit that made users hate windows with k2, will they bring back local accounts and stop trying to force the microsoft account bullshit, probably not, they spent more effort on trying to patch out whatever a small minority of power users were doing to get around them, making setup a bigger pain in the ass than ever. will they actually get rid of the retarded AI integration into everything, down to fucking MS paint and notepad, not a chance, they'll just rename it and change the logo since people are soured on copilot.

They're trying to break into the handheld market and part of that is by making a Windows that doesn't hog everything and is setup entirely for gaming.

Apple is belligerently refusing to even use fucking Vulkan, the superior graphics API, pushes ARM exclusively, and despite years of advances didn't create the kind of performant, universal translation layer that Valve is doing between x86 and ARM. They're so up their own ass with 3000+ "VR but doesn't support any of the VR games, controllers or other experiences" headsets and doing shit The Apple Way, that they don't notice anything else.

Apple is a shitshow that is only dedicated to a handful of cultists who will do what it says no matter how stupid. Fuck, this is part of why now Linux has a LARGER SHARE OF THE GAMING MARKET than Apple, both via Steam and other metrics! Even if they were given the opportunity, they'd shit it right down the drain if it was not to push their hardware and excosystem exclusively and the faster they die the better.

Linux infighting will lead to a handful of people (not the least of all Valve) basically pointing out
>Okay, this way works. We're going to put a fuckload of effort into it working even better and most others will come around and end up using it. If you want to do some niche stuff that's fine, maximize your autism but it doesn't get in the way of others openly developing shit moving forward.

This is the endgame of Gabe's vision. Back when he worked at Microsoft he realized that videogames (Doom in this case) outplayed Microsoft when it comes to software adoption/distribution. People aren't nerds that are obsessed with computers, they just want the entertainment. Gaben understood this and this is why he left Microsoft to fund Valve and focus on videogames, and the advancements we have seen in lots of places has been thanks to this.
>Unified graphics API? Thanks to Half-Life
>Digital store and game distribution, and increased PC gaming market? Thanks to Steam
>Versatile physics engine? Thanks to Havok
>Increased Linux compatibility with Windows programs? Thanks to Proton
Microsoft was too comfortable because Linux has always been seen as the nerd's OS for people that are too butthurt about Windows and never leave the basement, but now they got the memo as to what is going on and try to catch on. Too late, that is, because Microsoft became a den of India's caste system, where the higher caste works with Python, and the lower caste works with C/C++ and does all the work.
Gaben won, this is a fact. And it's going to be more apparent in the upcoming years.

After NN died, everyone thought that MS' IE's hegemony would last forever. Look what happened.

Pretty much
Microsoft has been burning goodwill since Windows 8, while Valve was actually working on giving people more options to play their games spanning from the past to the current day.

Considering most people just need a DE that runs a browser and a way to move their photos from their phone to their PC, I'd say it's good for desktop usage.

The thing about Indians is that they always prioritize other Indians when it comes to hiring/firing. Hence why Microslop was overtaken in such a short period of time.

what they're going to do instead is make windows edge, paint and other shit that comes pre-installed stuff that you will have to download from the store

What do you think 90% of women are genius? Touched grass recently? For every guy you hire you have to hire a retarded leftist woman. Just be glad she's not in charge of the hiring process itself.
>>
>>738015286
I work with a guy that is exactly like this. Zero concerns for performance and speed, bloat code all the way and you MUST use HIS patterns which force bloat and are totally garbage, which is why I don't for the most part.
>>
>>738019203
Are you retarded? I'd rather have a sane non-performative centrist woman in the role of critiquing what gets to be displayed according to company policies than some antifa-troon and not rely on solely one person but a three-headed method like European courts for a judgment call. (you need 2/3rds to get a positive result, Biblical law I believe coming from sentencing to murder where its two witnesses required and two out of three judges. Can't be just hearsay.)

better than windows
>>
My main PC used for games can't run newer than 10 anyway. On my laptop I use for work I had to jump through hoops to enable offline install without a Microsoft account when installing 11. If/when I get to the point of having to replace either, I'll probably switch to Linux. I think most emulators have Linux versions now, and I don't really do much besides internet and games. There are a few Windows-only applications I've gotten used to like MPC-HC, IrfanView, foobar2000 and MusicBee that might be annoying to find workarounds for, or maybe Wine works really well?
>>
Windows 10 until 2032 then Linux gets good enough, all is well
>>
I'll be honest, I'd rather stick to windows because linux looks clunky, so I'm glad they want to make an effort about it.
>>
>>738025465
The only application i never found a full replacement for was foobar. Sure, there are music players you can customize to look and and sort of act the same way, but foobars user created content like plugins and themes are just so good. I do miss it, I wont lie. Never tried it in wine. Everything else I ever used on windows I found a good replacement for that usually ended up being better than what I came from.
>>
>>737999974
