I like Anode Heart. It didn't do anything too crazy but it was different enough for me to play it to the end. I enjoyed the story/setting as well. I usually drop pokemon RPGs 3/4ths of the way through because they're so dry, but I intend to come back to this one day to do some of the built in challenge runs.
I discovered Monster Girls and the Mysterious Adventure a few years ago because I was craving a replay of PMD but didnt want to spin up an emulator and wanted to experience something new.I was happy with it tickling the monster collection itch that I had and it was actually difficult so it wasnt a cakewalk

BattlePets is the worst Pokemon clone out there by far, and Monster Crown (The original, not Sin Eater) had so many issues that is easily near the bottom. Of the non pokemon monster collection rpgs that i have played Fossil fighters is my favorite, ff champions was also good but the 3ds one sucked. Its pretty obviously pokemon but dinosaurs but it was fun, battle mechanics were unique and the fossil cleaning/digging stuff was cool.
