Exclusives are my sole reason for buying consoles. For Sony, it was third party exclusives because their recent PS5 exclusives have not been great. The PS4 ones were better outside of Astro Bot but if I wanted to play Mario Lite, I could go play Mario instead.

The audience for exclusives is 13 million, give or take.
It's only Nintendo. Best selling ps5 ex lusive is god of war 2 or Spiderman and both are at like 15 million. All exclusives way less. 92 million ps5s. The majority are not playing the exclusives. The top 10 played games on console are not exclusives. They are not the primary reason people buy a specific console all the time. Some people do. Lots of Nintendo fans do. What this convo lacks is acknowled that there's lots of different consumer types in gaming. What we can tell is a lot of people play 3rd party live service games, sports, and annual shooters and nothing else. Why these people choose one console over another is not due to exclusives because they don't buy them.

Growing up through the 80's and 90's, yes, when you bought a console, one of the factors, outside of graphics, performance, etc, was indeed exclusives. Yet, after the 7th generation, all consoles just became dumbed down PCs that may have a game on them that you can't find anywhere else. But since capitalism is in such a way now, publishers can't afford to make a billion dollar game and keep it locked on 1 system that may sell 500k copies; they have to port it to every system if they want to be profitable. As for anything else, emulation exists and clearly is growing at a faster rate.

I think its true to some extent but most people couldn't even tell you what exclusive games PS5 has. Like I game on it because I know I won't miss anything (unlike Xbox where Japanese games arrive 2 years later or never). But I'm not like chomping at the bit for "Sony First Party".Tokyo Extreme Racer, Earth Defense Force 5, Gran Turismo 7, and Death Stranding 2 (not for long) are 3 "not Xbox" games I can name off the cuff that I enjoy to a greater or lesser extent but anymore I really need to think about it and double check. Ghostwire Tokyo, Callisto Protocol, Bugsnax and a lot of those big launch games associated with PS5 got ported to Xbox.It's more like Playstation 5 has everything that comes out and gets it on time so why wouldn't you. And I'm not like going to war for them I was a big Xbox gamer for a long time and I wish I still was but there is just no incentive. They are even being shit on in the power race with PS5 Pro.
