>>738025653DoW has just space marines, the expansion, winter assault, has a branching campaign with space marines, imperial guard, eldar (Order) vs. chaos space marines, orks (Disorder), and dark crusade & soulstorm have a Risk-style campaign with all available races but it's mostly skirmishes with just main bases for each race being scripted, campaign-like missions; still breddy good
>>738025653Vanilla DoW is SM onlyWinter Assault plays interchangeably with each faction before settling on 1 of 2 routes: Order (IG, Eldar) and Disorder (Orks, Chaos), with a choice on which faction to side with for the final missions.Dark Crusade and Soulstorm have a Risk-style map that you take over via skirmishes, but with unique stronghold missions to eliminate a faction and unique missions for territories that grant some macrogame bonus if you hold them.Vanilla DoW2 and the Chaos Rising expansion follows SM only, but Retribution allows you to play the campaign with every faction, but there's no variation beyond NPC IG being allied or not, and some factions unlock their superunit on different side missions. The entry that doesn't exist alternates between factionsDoW4 looks to have individual campaigns for each faction

>>738035315Retribution's Chaos plot follows Eliphas trying to usurp Kyras so he can ascend into a Daemon Prince himself. The problem with Retribution's Chaos campaign is that they only have 2 voiced characters, (((Steve Blum))) Eliphas and Neroth aka angry Sindri, so most of the banter goes between both of them as the other 2 heroes are generics. Most of the generic CSM enemies and Traitor Guard otherwise have pretty generic motivations, but they have really hammy voice acting.Eliphas does have pretty good bantz with Davian Thule (who is Chaos' prologue boss) and Kyras when they do interact however.
>>738035315It's been forever since I played DoW2 but I'm pretty sure the gist of it is that Eliphas gets ressurected by Abaddon, which changes his entire personality and voice, and in return he has to do whatever the fuck the plot of Retribution was (it's the same for all campaigns) or his soul is le doomed. He fucking hates his sorcerer though but it's not as good as Bale and Sindri. I'm not sure if the other squad leaders even have voice lines in the campaign that's how unmemorable they are

>>738035976Saying the plot is the same might've not been the best choice of words, what I meant is that everyone goes after the same objectives because they had to figure out how to repeat the same campaign 6 times with the least amount of effort due to THQ collapsing around them. Everyone has different motivations but they're all going through the same motions
>>738035693Chaos has never truly recovered from this shamefur dispray. Up there with getting their shit kicked in by an autistic firewarrior.
>>738035949Zun's art does have that programmer feel to it, but it is still far better than his games make it out to be. For some reason though his characters instantly look worse as soon as he colors in his line art.
>>738035612>>738035667Shame. Though the whole demon and chaos worship is like the norm it seems, where night lords and iron warriors are the exception, so shouldn't be surprised. Even if that's the case I think they could do more to make chaos plots feel less sunday cartoon villain evil and more interesting, even if they're drank the chaos gods kool-aid word bearers-tier, as that's true in the BL books, say what you want about them but they often make them more compelling. I almost get some second hand embarassment thinking about this being someone's first entry into 40k and they think chaos is this boring.
>>738036353>For some reason though his characters instantly look worse as soon as he colors in his line artColoring is a skill, bad coloring will look worse than no coloring, and Zun shit looks like it's painted with Paint default colors only
>>738036360>Chaos is full of... chaos worship? How could this be?Jokes aside DoW was my first introduction to 40k (and what made me a chaostard to begin with) and I vastly prefer Chaos as power hungry backstabbing retards (to a point, Crull was overkill) to humanizing them since you need far more skill to pull that off and both the librarian in base DoW and DoW2CR failed to make it compelling enoughThey nailed Chaos with Eliphas and we still haven't gotten a better rep in vidya than him (haven't played TW since I'm not interested in fantasy, maybe there's someone better there)

>>738035463Deathwatch with really different squad members from incompatible chapters that are bound to create friction and conflict with each squad member's shameful past that got some of them put in the watch coming to light, but they slowly grow to be bros by the end. Some options like >Black templar autist greatshield tank proclaiming the emperor's divinity while Titus from rationalmarines gets really assblasted about it>Space wolf rune priest insisting his shit isn't psyker stuff and everyone mocks him for it>blood angel mobile jetpack guy who's the refined one always pointing out the art they're passing by and when he inevitably gives into the red thirst the BT sees him as an abomination and they come to blows before becoming brosAlso some Light squad commands to give out like republic commando ( doesn't need to get to swat 4 levels or anything). or just give us alternating missions with a loyalist and a traitor squad respectively like in Gears of war 2 and in the end they fuck each other up and you can choose the last third of the game for who you want to play us for the remainder

All in on fighting off a giant Chaos Undivided Black Crusade targeting the 500 Worlds. You have some chaos cultist chaff but the main focus is fighting off Chaos Space Marines, both standard ones and specialists belonging to each of the Chaos Gods. I know Kill Team has traitor guard stuff but I don't see a reason to give GW money after that shitAnd I was talking about vidya where Chaos always ends up as antagonists so the powerhungry archetype works better, I don't have anything against other versions of chaos, but they need far more setup than typical 40k vidya usually allows. >>738038953 (You)Now that I remember it, Rogue Trader would've been a lot better with chaos options being justified with "greater good", at least at the start, instead of being written with the assumption that this is the "evil playthrough" and your character is just evil from the start. That might work for other settings but in 40k it's far harder to justify picking options that are so blatantly fucking chaotic in nature that even an Ogryn wouldn't fall for them without roleplaying as someone already converted to Chaos before the game starts, which in turn makes it impossible to justify why no one kills you for being such an obvious fucking traitor especially given the fact Argenta already killed the last RT for far less
>>738020353Only thing i remember is some space marine mumbling about unguarded gates
>>738039290>Eradicators (Heavy Bolters)Still kinda confused why this wasn't the first Fireline model they made. Shame about the dumb little gun shield. Not much of a fan of that. >>738028583I internalise the belief that space robot supermen are cool because I have fascist beliefs IRL, actually. I got into warhammer because it was the only franchise that had the balls to depict fascism as objectively good.
>>738038926Given the extent to which technologically advanced humans can adapt to their environment without physical changes to our bodies it isn't really clear how realistic every planet in the imperium having large physical differences in the population due to environment. But also 40k is a setting where some humans have indeed branched off in to ogryns, ratlings, and more, so whether it is realistic is neither here nor there because it is in fitting with the setting. The main issue is that the imperium is all "I hate mutants" so the only way to have human ethnic variety is by varying skin tones within the currently normal human range. The radiation turning all the salamanders black isn't more realistic than a space time anomaly tuning all the people in a star system in to purple vampires, but fans would have a hard time accepting a canon regiment of purple vampire imperial guard becauae hating aliens and mutants is part of the imperium's bit.

>>738039757>Given the extent to which technologically advanced humans can adapt to their environmentYou can count the amount of imperial worlds that would do large scale genetic projects like that one one hand, most don't give a shit if the entire world is slowly dying of ass cancer from the toxic fumes because for every 1 person who dies from it and could've lived longer with treatment there's 10 billion that die long before that from all the other shit imperium subjects them to

>>738035579has mossa drawn lovey-dovey emps + cultist-chan nakadashi yet?
>>738039757>>738039757It is realistic. Living on an alien planet even if its earth like would cause changes in both your genome and how your genes express pretty much the moment you start breathing its air. It could produce visible physical changes in only one generation manifesting as birth defects. You wouldn't even need ten thousand years to make ogrin or ratlings really assuming everyone doesn't die horrifically in a year because of alien prions or something. If anything 40k was overly conservative with how divergent abhumans would be.
>>738040428>>738040509The Imperium:>Controls all facets of life in its people, including thought, culture, and information>Brutally suppresses any dissention>Indoctrinates all citizens with unceasing propaganda>Is permanently at war with all of its neighbors>Prizes military strength above all things>Is horrifically racist against all non-humans and abhumans (minorities)>Treats war as a defining national purpose>Considers all absolute authority to be from its leader rather than its people>Treats its citizens' lives as a disposable resource>Likes floppy fancy hatsYeah, many of these things apply to other ideologies, but you're being stupid on purpose if you choose to ignore how obvious the parallels are.

>>738041216Nothing I said was incorrect about the Imperium, and all of those apply to the Nazis except MAYBE all authority extending from the leader.
>>738041190Yes, heaps. Most worlds are ag-worlds, or just civilized worlds. Their outputs are food, or just various goodsEg Janus in Rogue Trader is a pretty sleepy planet, exporting grain. Yes there is a small problem with a chaos cult, but once you sort that out it's back to being a nice place. The vast population of hive worlds means that, at random, you're more likely to live on one of them, but such planets are rare and most planets are just peaceful pleasant places.
>>738041326Nazi hats were not floppy.
>>738041250>>738041273>>738041373Thanks guys.I admit I hardly know anything about 40K but from what little I'd seen it appeared as if every corner of the galaxy was just nonstop warfare. Glad that isn't the case.
>>738041416Oh come on.
>>738041190It depends on your definition of peaceful. The population of a world may attribute it's ultimate loyalty to the Imperium, but many civilized worlds host multiple warlords or noble families who share influence and compete to be the main hegemon that serves the Imperium most directly. Hive cities often go to war with each other over Resource and Trade rights, Agriworlds might have rival Overseers trying to lay claim to a fertile part of a continent, Shrineworld Cardinals might fight small scale holy wars over possession of a Relic. As long as the world fulfills it's tithe, the Imperium doesn't actually care much. Likewise the leaders of those worlds don't care about their population much as long as social cohesion is strong enough to fulfill their obligations. Which means the lower tiers of society are often dominated by crime lords. These are conflicts that would occur on these worlds on their own, ignoring the fact that these worlds are also often beset by countless Xenos races and the forces of Chaos. On average you might get to live most of your life relatively peacefully but there is probably going to be a period of violence at some point for the majority of people.
>>738041568Do you know what "Floppy" means?
>>738041190Not by our standards. Even the less "shitty" worlds are still dystopian and ran in tyrannical ways, mostly just due to the way the imperial governance works. Essentially planetary governors don't really have any checks or limits to how they treat their subjects outside of keeping the tithes to the Imperium going, shipping the psykers from their worlds to the black ships whenever they come around, and not consorting with Xenos.Because of this, the average citizens of the imperium have basically zero rights and no real ways of fighting the abuses their rulers inflict on them outside of outright rebelling against them. There is a reason why most of the fighting Imperial Guard does is against rebelling Imperial worlds.
>>738041568The inspiration was clearly the soviet hatsHitler's just wearing normal officer's hat no different than US or UK hats
>>738041102Where you live in the Imperium gives a completely different view of it. A farm world is kept in a agrarian level of technology and see anyone coming from the Imperium as literal angels working about behalf of the God Emperor. You could be living a awful existence on a hive-world totally ignorant of what lies beyond the towering spires above you as you toil keeping the machines running at the cost of your life expectancy. You could be someone living in a section in the heart of the Imperium far away from any war living a basic life taking in the propaganda about how great the Empire is as you go to work in some basic office job. The Imperium is a very diverse place all due to the events during the Dark Age of Technology that fractured and separated the human worlds. Some stayed the same and advanced, some stagnated and others collapsed either becoming technologically regressed worlds or just died off. There's planets still within the borders that have no idea about anything going on for a multitude of reasons thinking it's just them in the universe and then one day some Imperium ship comes in and tells them they're subjects of the Imperium of man and it's time to start contributing to the effort to keep the enemies at bay.
>>738040808Damn near all of those are justifiable in the setting as it is, and not whatever theoretical paradise leftists always use to compare things with. Even the "controls all facets of life of its people" is more a leftist thing to do, when practically all variants of socialism are very interested in the private interests of individuals than any feudalistic system would ever be. Which is more what the Imperium actually is in practice, space feudalism mixed with a theocracy as the Emperor is the final word on everything, and the High Lords claim that they speak for the Emperor. Recent lore changes means Guilliman quite literally enacts the will of the Emperor since he personally spoke with him, as much as it disheartened him to do.
>>738042165>space feudalism mixed with a theocracyYeah I mean it's the holy roman empire in spaceComplete clusterfuck of competing powersJust like the warhammer fantasy empire is the holy roman empire in a fantasy world

The former being a primitive pre-industrial world that the imperium has decided not to expend the resources to technologically develop and which can be a relatively okay place to live, and the latter being fully industrialized for maximum output with no regard for environmental damage and living/working conditions. >>738059742That's the point of a setting like this though, before everyone started fellating BL's garbage novels, you could just use it as scaffolding for your own lore.Run an Imperial Guard army and say they came from an agriworld that's literally just Stardew Valley, it's all idyllic and beautiful and the tithe is just one ton of radishes per year, and it's fine.

Any world that is kept primitive is usually done so for the sake of creating stronger warriors to recruit for guard regiments or astartes chapters and sometimes done so for the sake of control when just a bit out of the way from main imperial influence.

Upon realizing that dying for the Emperor has less benefits than dying for Chaos, most people are quick to phone us!In fact, we have so many people from the Imperium that by some estimates the amount of Chaos Worshippers in the Imperium may outnumber those following the Imperial truth! You know what they say, when on your death bed, your second to last words praise the Emperor, but your last ones are a prayer to Slaanesh!
>>738064289Honestly they should do a split campaign at this point, one side following Titus (or a new guy since Titus is busy defending the entire Ultramar system) and another following an aspiring Chaos Marine who plots to usurp his Chaos Lord, then becoming Titus' main rival. You can then choose which character to play in the final boss fight against the other, which will affect the ending.

>>738060085Warhammer: Gladius:Relics of War was about the closest you could get if you wanted a 40k strategy game with the sheer amount of playable races like DoW1 had. It's a wargame using a lot of basic 4X mechanics but because the goal is to be the last faction standing or complete your racial questline first, you do a lot of fighting. Frankly the whole game is geared towards fighting, researching new units to fight with, upgrades to make them more effective at fighting, etc. etc. I like it, but the loyalty spiral can happen very quickly if you try to build more than 3 cities on the base difficulty. Increasing difficulty just gives the AI more loyalty, which means they'll pump out more cities and those cities will be more productive, but their general AI is still the same. Playable factions for it include:Space MarinesImperial GuardOrksNecronsChaos Space MarinesTauEldarDark EldarAdeptus MechanicusSisters of BattleTyranids

This reminds me that I still have my DVDs for DoW 1, Winter Assault and Dark Crusade and recently even played two Dark Crusade campaigns (SM and Tau - somehow Tau feel really weak in comparison, especially in vehicles department - unless I go Montka with Hammerheads, I literally have no use for vehicles, compared to what other factions can field, but it also means no range/damage/hp upgrade for Fire Warriors, in game where large groups always tend to spread out absurdly).Im really starving for good RTS experience.
>>738066736This. At the same time, they fixed the Combi-weapons, because everyone yelled at them about how retarded that was. >>738035828>>73803584110,000 year-old reply, but when Dark Crusade released, the Tau had next door to no presence in the Warp and had no concept of Chaos. When Eliphas is using telepathy, the Tau don't understand that it's not telecommunication. They're unintentionally disrespecting him, which is what makes the encounter so cool.Anecdotally, Eliphas freaking out once he realizes that Necrons honest-to-Tzeentch do NOT have souls reflects just how ignorant each faction can be to each other, and highlights how phenomenal the game's writing is. Extending this line of thought is Taldeer calling the Tau "naive children" because the Tau are the youngest race and have no idea just how badly the galaxy has been fucked up at least three times.

I just want them to scale up all models and then I might be tempted to buy some again. Unfortunately they shot themselves in the foot by making primaris true scale, means everyone has to become primaris for that to happen (which I honestly would like, just get it over with, realize it was a dumb lore thing to do and just make them irrelevant by giving everyone the upgrade through Kal finding out a harmless way to do it or something)

Actually, why Tau have such limited access to battlesuits in Dark Crusade and Soulstorm? Broadside are one unit, Crisis suits are one unit and limited to 3 and that's it. Plus, outside of Hammerhead (limited to 2 and one upgrade path), they only have surprisingly weak Devilfish, Drone squad (that makes little use), Drone Carrier (that require manually pressing "create drone" button each time unless I'm missing something) and Skyray that somehow cannot hit anything (I watched their rockets fly by targets all the time, failing to hit anything at all) and blocks itself on every other unit or terrain piece.
