The main thing it tries to do is unfuck the vanilla calculations and make armor more resistant to tribal weapons, for example. It's noble in spirit.

The big downside to this is that it really narrows down your play style. As soon as you get a certain type of raid, if you don't have X level of firepower, it's over. A faction with a certain armor type is going to require you to have rushed to a certain, predictable level.

It isn't the worst mod in the world, but it touches so much of the game that you always have to be thinking about it when building your modlist. And what it changes can be done with other mods.

Cooking mods are often bloated with a ton of extra plants and featues that are rarely well balanced.
VGP is one of the worst offenders when it comes to adding overpowered foods that undermine the vanilla drug/medical options.

If you want visual meal alternatives without affecting the balance just use Food Texture Variety.

Vanilla Rimworld combat is such utter dogshit that this mod is almost mandatory. Pretty much every new player learns to build killboxes that trivialize all raids because vanilla combat is so awful that this is the only reasonable way to play. When you get bored of that, you install Combat Extended and swear to never build another killbox.

I really like CE's ammo system. It is pretty much the main reason i keep it installed (that and embrasures).
I thought it'd be some retarded unneccessary tedium like the aforementioned shitter, but its really fun to arm your pawns with different rounds for different situations, like having the slavers carry beanbags in their combat shotguns or using gas grenades during a raid in launchers, instead of having a billion weapons all for a specific task each.
I also have a weird liking to blazebulb farming for some reason.

It's a really low-tedium mod that just makes your base and pawns seem more real. It doesn't really change anything, but I like it anyway. Also, it's fun to be able to punish characters by making them live in extreme squalor.

Rimworld's combat is shit on purpose. Rimworld is intended to be a story generator and Tynan feels that tragedy and failure should be part of it, so the combat is very RNG. Your super soldier is never unstoppable, a pawn is always at risk of dying.

I think the only overrated mods would be a lot of the Vanilla Expanded series and Common Sense. Common Sense is a little too convenient, it completely trivializes the cleaning task for instance.
