I just saw this on steam, i had the same mindset from back in the ps1 days that the games i own on steam are mine, isnt that the truth? what am i missing here? someone care to explain?
>>738032253Just 2 more weeks broTrust me, Steam will take away your games broJust two more weeks
>>738032352the moment gabe dies steam dies with him. they will put mandatory fees just to access your games
>>738032253Yea, did you know the government can legally take your car and house too and there's nothing you can do about it. You should just go homeless in the woods
why do people who don't understand copyright law insist on commenting on it?
>>738032352Did you say this in those astroturfed Snoy hate threads? Probably.
>>738032619It's illegal to be homeless in the woods though
>>738032253I found this out at 10 reading the Sierra EULA, people are clueless
kind of like your house, you don't actually own it
>>738032253we do. its just that the big meanie EU are doing a hecking communismerino and being mean to our daddy Gabe N
>>738032707>astroturfed Snoy hate threads
>>738032253we never did, the difference being that removing access to the software once you've broken the license terms is much easier now.fwiw you can keep steam in offline mode indefinitely after you've downloaded your games if you suspect your license will be revoked for any reason.
>>738032595this but they will inject mustard gas trojans into your motherboard
The question is: is this license perpetual? In theory, yes. When you buy a game on Steam, you acquire a perpetual license to use the game. The same goes for PSN, the Nintendo eShop, Epic Games, the Microsoft Store, or GOG.So, theoretically speaking, you own the license these stores sold you...But that's where the ugly truth comes in. ALL of these stores (including GOG) say the license isn't actually yours, and so they reserve the right to revoke any license for any reason from any user.Is this legal? Of course not... it's literally a scam. But that's what corporations put in their contracts. And that's the only reason you don't actually own your digital games.Note: in theory, they say the same thing about physical media, but here's the thing: since the physical media license is in your hands, inside your home, the only way they can "revoke" the license (if it's an offline game) is literally by suing you and having the police come into your home to seize your game. But then we're back to the heart of the matter: is it legal for them to do that?
>>738032253i dunno about you but i own the things i buy
>>738032253>Owning gamesI do, because i’m a pirate.
>>738032253piratechads keep on winning
>>738032253You dont own your PS1 games either considering they are tied to a dead platform with no legitimate way to play them besides digging up old hardware
>>738033183Just walk away Leave the platform wars, the endless shill threads, your endlessly repeated bullshitWe will give you safe passage on the board, just walk away and put an end to the shitpostingJust walk away
>>738032253I'm too european to understand this
>>738032253>be ps1 game>I insert disc into console and run>want to play nu-game>there's a bunch of overlays and I need to wait for it to install 132 upgrades for SteamUI(TM) that make table texture shiny or some shit and UI bloat even you only want to run a single-player game, Gabe could install AI bs on it anytime now and everyone will have to eat it up>>someone care to explain? There, I explained it.
>>738033054my house is bought and paid for
>>738033559sure, until they decide that there's gonna be railroad build through it. then you don't
>>738033470>I need to wait for it to installA whole 10 seconds?
>>738032595Yeah the moment gabe dies the inheritor will surely go "gee willickers, I just got a company that will print FREE MONEY for me until the end of time, I better sell it quick!"Fucking use your brain
>>738034001It's not like gabe owns the whole company anyway. But year all you need is couple nerds to update the store and it prints money by just existing. Zero reason to sell it.
>>738033692more likely to happen than valve revoking your license to play a game you bought on steam
>>738032595>they will put mandatory fees just to access your gamesDo it. I want to see this crash and burn in real time.
>>738032253Games with DRM are only rentals, and you should never pay more than a rental fee for them.
>>738032253
>>738032253If I don't own my games then Ubislop should not own thei...oh wait it's Steam this time. Nvm, carry on.
>>738032253If you buy something, you own it. It's as simple as that. You buy a digital product on one online store, you can download it for free on another. It would be kinda stupid (and a scam) if you had to buy the same digital product multiple times.
>>738032253Can't speak for americans, but in first world countries, we own our games. Steam lost every court case trying to argue otherwise so far, no reason this would change.
>>738032253Steam says I own my games, so all is good. GOG was forced to admit they rent licenses, though. That seems pretty scummy for a company, especially since they require a web browser to download, which is basically always online DRM.
>>738036389Congrats dude, you literally raped those Ste*m cultists
>>738037762oh really? thats awesome, so since you own your games, can I buy some of them from your steam library?
>>738038116He's definitely poor since he's not American, so he probably resells his games for his monthly cup of rice air dropped by the Marines.
