FFXIV's launch was a disaster and they needed some quick money, and Toriyama already directed XIII so it made sense to keep him on. But all his tard-wranglers were moved to different projects, so his impulses were left unchecked.

It's not entirely like the kew "movie games" of today, but the somewhat linear style and visible map keeps you progressing without doubt. I didn't have anxiety feeling like I was missing a resource or an upgrade but I still had multiple environments and areas to explore. And they we were beautiful, along with the soundtrack. XIII-2 was even better. I can't wait to see if they make a XIII-3

I tried getting into FF13 at least five times but I always get bored and drop around the 10 hour mark.

I couldn't even make it past the 2nd "world" if you will. I had absolutely no idea what reputation the game had, but in the years since, I've seen too people have nothing but negative things to say about it.

That project was probably cheap enough that it was easier to approve for pencil pushers. I don't know if LR still used a bunch of unused 13 assets, but there was enough shit already made for the previous 2 games that it wasn't so hard to approve a third.
