I can do MMOs I guess too, basically open world content has a lot of problems obviously, mostly to do with rewards. Nobody really wants good rewards outside of a raid. It can be fun from a role playing perspective, which is probably where most of the joy is at. Exploration moments only last a couple seconds, but it’s somewhat similar to a hit from a drug. These happen when art and atmosphere is well put together. One way is to add challenge, to turn it into a single player event basically. But, it’s hard to balance the content, when there’s so many different classes and gear levels, without ruining the character progression feeling. Without the characters gear being important, it feels more like minigame content. They can also add currency rewards, to make up for the lack of item rewards. But currency is usually pretty useless, otherwise it turns into a different kind of game. Clearing maps is itself fun enough, and is important to the overall design of character progression. Although nobody really enjoys it that much, I think. Its like kinda boring and pointless, compared to the main part of the game which is organized group content. Collection stuff like pets and achievements were a great attempt, but there’s just way too much of it when they keep making new expansions. Like you’ll probably never collect everything, why try.

And for the people who missed stuff, it’s like a huge feeling of exhaustion to see this massive list of unobtainable items, when there’s one they really want. Another thing is it doesn’t actually improve your character. Which is where the real dopamine hits are at, getting a cool outfit or pet or mount is like a cheap form for losers typically.

But, this will only last a little while, until people get more gear. Blizzard basically had to give us limited MP to slow casters down while leveling, to make world content challenging. And melee would take high damage. But as soon as you get some upgrades it’s like very different, like if you had full items from the auction house at lvl 15, you’d be godmode again. But without the item upgrades there’s no carrot. Thats actually why all the carrots are in raids too, although even raids will get progressively way easier. And that’s how a lot of people clear their raid tiers is just by over gearing all the content and making it like you have several extra party members.

But when people in your party have higher ilvl, you’re now killing it much faster. Grouping up for map content is really hit and miss, I think I enjoy 2 party groups more than full party. So 2 party group content is like a higher skilled version, because you don’t have both a tank and a healer, you might even be 2 dps. And these groups last like 5 minutes at most, otherwise it’s too long. I think I enjoyed those types of things. Like a very hard solo quest, but possible. And, still kinda hard with 2 people. And, 3 people is basically free.
