what causes this? where does this even come from?

its crazy how ubiquitous it is considering there's like no historical precedent for it at all aside from one super niche shortsword from africa.

Most artists don't copy from real life or history, they copy from other artists.

Not really the wiki's fault if a museum takes down the page on an exhibit when the exhibit stops being displayed.

this is from the lord fo the rings movies.

Realism for weapons only matters if you're trying to make something historical. Otherwise, it has just to seem reasonable within the context of what you're making.
>>
>>738039668
Based and correct. The only rules that should matter to weapon design are the ones of your specific game, whether they be design rules or magic rules. If you want realism, that is your choice, and it becomes a design rule.

there's only so many ways you can draw a sword. if you want more than, say, 6 unique swords you're going to have to get weird about it

the actual issue with jap sword design is that they'll design the more Euro-centric setting imaginable and then equip their blonde haired vikings with fucking katanas
>>
>>738037475
What's wrong with that? Unless it's a game set in the real world, there's no need to make the surrounding scenery and decor 1:1 with real life. It also makes your game less memorable. No one is going to remember some real sword in a game, but everyone knows of the Buster Sword, the Beastlord, Virtuous Contract/Treaty, Cruel Oath, Cruel Blood Oath and other very stylish swords from vidya and manga/anime.

Unless it's a very famous sword like El Cid's Tizona and Colada, there's no point basing fictional weapons on that basis.

Every single Japanese game in a European setting has European-style swords as a default. There might be katanas and scimitars and shit like that you can equip, but most enemies and people in those games just use things ranging from claymores, Zweihanders, gladii and standard broadswords along with other historically European sword types.

Fair enough. I guess Japs really like swords with curved ends. To be fair they are cool. The Beastlord is not exactly the same as te sword in the OP, but it does have the cool curved blade end which made it the most iconic weapon in the Nier games.
