Unfortunately I'm actually old enough to remember all of this.With Smash 64 I never even expected them to make a second one, I just thought it was a really fun game, I actually remember liking it a lot. And I don't even know if Nintendo realized how many people liked it, they probably also assumed it was just some one time game for the N64 that would never release again until they were surprised when Melee became so popular. There was the famous Melee poll but nobody had heard of that in real life, nobody knew about the melee poll until many years later only like 300 people took the poll and nobody even knew about it for like 5 years. Everyone was surprised by how good Melee looked and it was the subject of a lot of internet rumors due to the various secrets in the game, like the black hole glitch, the 2 second luigi cutscene, the giga bowser fight, the playable master hand, and many other weird secrets. I remember people used to tell me rumors about how to get secret characters that were never even in the game, this was sort of the beginning of rosterfaggotry. But then in the years leading up to brawl, they kinda started to build hype around the roster they had that website smashbrosdojo where they would release info about new characters and stuff. Nobody cared about Smash 4 because the Wii U was a failed console, and Ultimate was certainly a massive rosterfag game that was like THE rosterfag game, so OP kinda has a point, but also not, it was a different kind of rosterfaggotry back then I suppose, it wasn't people faking their reactions, people were like actually happy that sonic and snake were in the game, for smash ultimate the rosterfaggotry was just autists overrreacting and having a meltdown about the character reveal trailers, lol.

I think they could leave more recently introduced characters alone and just focus on revamping the old characters as a selling point. But you're right, it would piss off autists, so I'm not sure it will happen, even if it should. Another big story mode like SSE feels like a safe crowd pleaser. More customization in the form of alt costumes and echo fighters too, and I wouldn't mind if they brought back custom moves. Alt costumes in particular are a huge untapped well of fan service, there's no reason characters like Mario should still be stuck with only 8 colours. I think echo fighters are a good move too to introduce more characters without having to make a bunch of new movesets, but it also has the potential of pissing people off. If they bring back custom moves it should be like Mega Man's where it actually gives characters different abilities from their games, it could be a way of modernizing old character's movesets somewhat without committing to full overhauls if they're not willing to do that.

Smash is too fast paced of a game for me to ever use Hero's menu for example. It sounds like the type of argument other people make when they say games like Mario 64 aged poorly when it's actually still one of the best platformers out there, and modern platformers still strive to have the type of smooth and fluid gameplay that it has.
