You start completely clueless but everyday you learn something new. You have to be patient and persistent. I picked up and dropped complex games a gazillion times, it's something that might take months or even years if you want to really dive deep into it. Your first runs are gonna be total trainwrecks but once you learn to play each run will get better progressively. I consider myself a huge noob in those games and only recently started adopting the mindset for these. The good thing is that they are sandbox-y, there is no winning or losing, you just set a goal and work towards it. For example, in RimWorld i like raising families and making my own religions with the Ideology DLC. In Vic 3 i am working towards uniting the Netherlands as Belgium. I still haven't done it but i'm close enough.
