Did anyone else play this? It was so fucking good.
>>
>>738062860
It was great, but Funcom is in the running for the most retarded studio ever
>>
>>738062860
I played it a little bit but I never liked it all that much, is it still going?
>>
>>738062860
What was good about it?
>>
I remember it most fondly when it wasn't revealed/released and nobody had any idea what it was. There was an entire (very large) ARG around it when that concept was popular and not yet played out. Eventually it was revealed to be an MMO with different secret societies in a modern setting in a "all conspiracies are true" and also had a strong emphasis on story, which were all very cool and unique.

It also started(?) a bunch of trends that were really cool; like being able to respec whenever you wanted, every quest being repeatable. There were also really cool environmental and world-based quests, like the infamous puzzle quests where you had to look things up in the in-game internet browser or look in the world for clues. Great quests but the fact you could repeat a quest with a linear puzzle focus was a strange choice. The game also had the issue of the first few areas getting the vast majority of the polish and later ideas feeling much weaker. I still liked the game a ton and then the suits canned it while it was still popular and rebooted it to drain a few shekels from people in a very tasteless way. Unfortunate.

>cool setting
>great atmosphere
>deep puzzle quests
Too bad the combat was ass.
>>
>>738063241
>absolutely incredible atmosphere
>kino world and story
>interesting quests
>fun dungeons and raids
>>
The puzzles and investigation missions were some of the most fun I've had in any game. Too bad the rest of the game was pretty meh. I still have an itch to go back and play but I don't even if those missions are even possible anymore.
>>
>>738063427
While it was tab-targetting combat I actually thought it was fine. Not "good" by any means but the game was designed to have several unique differences with how you could mix and match weapons. I liked how each type had a different resources gimmick; ranged built up combo points on individual enemies, melee built up combo points on you, and magic had all combo points ready to go and was more like a resource you had to manage, which subtly made each weapon feel a little different. Plus I felt like it did a lot more with things like active dodging and basic mechanics even on trash mob fights (similar to Wildstar) which felt more involved then like low level WoW content. Being able to mix and match any weapons you wanted for decks included passive ones was cool but unfortunately like with any game with that concept it just becomes "copy the most meta online deck and never experiment or else you won't do shit on raids and get kicked"

Also since your character progression was so item based it felt like more content was relevant for longer; but it had the double edged sword of needing a high player count to justify that. Like if you weren't already geared, I remember trying to get any raid besides the very first one (Polaris) you'd be in the LFG for hours and never get anything, so low to mid-geared characters without a guild or dedicated friend group just couldn't advance. The classic of "why are you playing an MMO without friends???" is very true here but oh well.

The trailers were really cool.

It was a damn masterpiece of game design.
Too bad the company didn't want to put more money into it after the game was done.
Fucking MMOs

TEMPLARCHADS WHERE ARE YOU?!

Actively hurt by the MMO nature and ironically best enjoyed without other players. Investigations and puzzles are still great.
>>
The game is still on steam though?
Why you niggas crying like it's gone

I never played the game btw I'm just genuinely wondering

i remember that pic related promo art caught my eye back in the day. never played it though, i'm not much for MMOs personally
>>
can i play it in the year of our lord 2026?
>>
>>738065042
It's in maintenance mode. Which I can't really slight Funcom for. You can still play Anarchy Online, Age of Conan and The Secret World just fine.
>>
>>738062860
>>738064295
>>738065243

Interesting thing about TSW, the OG game servers are still up, but you need to have an old account registered before the rework to access it.
can't make a new one.
>>
>>738065042
Cause it's an mmo and the time it takes for new content to come out is too fucking long.
It's never getting a sequel, it got a remake/redo but not a sequel, the missions they're making now (I think they're in south africa now) are kinda bad.
>>
>>738062860
It's my all time favourite objectively terrible game.
Despite the jank, the awful combat, the terrible graphics, the interface literally being made in Flash and dreadful voice acting, it just had that "something" that made me love it.
I think being an MMO wasthe game's biggest error. Stuff like the investigation missions, the literal best stuff in the fucking game, are completely at odds with the mindset of an MMO player. I'm willing to bet 90% of players just looked up the solutions.
>>
urban fantasy is a very underused setting.
unfortunately funcom didn't commit to actually sticking with the re-release of it (TSW: Legends) and continued to spend all their dev time on Conan instead. The survival-crafter not the MMO (which they also ran + abandoned)
>>
>>738065416
>dreadful voice acting
What the hell do you mean? It probably has the best MMO voice acting. I remember there was a big deal about how TOR was fully voiced, but TSW's voice quality easily trumped it.
>>
>>738065556
I love TSW but saying it's voice acting is better than SWTOR's is a bit crazy
>>
>>738065556
I will never forget the voice acting in the Vanishing of Tyler Freeborn expansion and how hard it made me laugh.
Especially when the Orochi trooper guy yells "NOTLIKETHIS-NOOOOOOOOO!"
>>
>>738065556
I think it was really good cause it was done by amateurs.
Really sold the B rank terror movie of the settings.
>>
>>738065387
Hol up, crackah. They're releasing content for the game still?
>>
>>738065783
I don't think they'v released anything since South Africa, which was a few years ago and also bad.
Just pretended the game ended in Tokyo.
>>
>>738065783
There was a mission in south africa you can watch in youtube.
Don't know about anything else past that.

Be a good boy and do as mommy says.
>>
>>738062860
It's still a game worth check out because nothing like it really exists.
>>
>>738065887
tsw or legends?
>>
im seeing a "Secret World Legends" on steam, is it the same game, a sequel or a remaster?
>>
>>738065956
Dumbed down re-release. They removed a lot of the MMO progression and added shitty pay2win shit in its place. But it's also the only way a new player can experience it.
>>
>>738065949
Both. More because of how it tackles mystery and horror. Legends sadly sacrificed a lot of the customization for a half-assed action combat system.
>>
>>738065956
It's a free to play reboot that dramatically changed the skills and progression for the worse, as well as fucked up the story pacing. Unfortunately it's the only option new players have as you can only access the original if you already have an account.
>>
>>738066134
What change(s) caused the scuffed story pacing?
>>
>>738066261
Forcing you to do the Egypt Last Train to Cairo stuff during the middle of the original Egypt story when it explicitly takes place afterwards. It's been fucking forever since I've played so I might be wrong but If I remember correctly the antagonist of it even mentions the player having already done things that happen later in the Egypt story when you meet them now.
>>
>>738066548
That's one example, yeah.
Basically the original had new chapters that released semi-regularly that all took place after the base game and took place in locations you'd already been to.
Legends decided to just compress everything that happens in each area sequentially, meaning sometimes the dialogue makes no sense.
>>
thread convinced me try this game (Legends)
12gb? hopefully my shitty laptop can run it at 1080p 60fps lol
>>
>>738067380
Should be fine. The game is very primitive.
Just don't buy anything.
>>
>>738062860
At least it got a proper finale, I still wanted to visit Congo though.
>>
>>738062860
shouldn't the templars and illuminati be the same thing?
>>
>>738062860
>It was so fucking good
the story was decent but the gameplay and graphics were trash
>>
>>738069180
They kinda are, I think in the lore they split at some point. In the game the Templars represent the old world while the Illuminati the new world.

I always chose the Dragon faction because I'm a sucker for Eastern nonsense content.
>>
>>738062860
>>738062860
All the good parts about it would've been 10x better if they were in a single-player game, unfortunately.
While I normally like MMOs, in case of Secret World you could see how being a multiplayer game actively made it worse - the moment you got out of the tutorial areas, combat became an absolute fucking chore unless you were grouping, and, unless you were grouping with friends, being in a party normally meant you had to skip reading all the lore and story text.
>>
>>738065713
>amateurs
Idk about the later chapters, but city hubs and initial missions were all voices by stage and film actors (and they did a very decent job).
>>
>>738069656
This is true.
All the runs I did in the Slaughterhouse and I still don't know what the fuck was going in there.
I get nazi vampires doing experiments in an old soviet bunker, but I wanted to stop and read the lore, but no, gotta run the dungeon.
>>
>>738062860
TSW would have been an all-time classic if it were a single player game, instead it languishes as a forgotten dead MMO

I literally don't know what they were thinking. It had a great skeleton but they decided to fill it with shit.
>>
Legends neutering the character creator was it's greatest sin.

I still wish they would make this happen. To add insult to injury SWL is still missing two dungeons and some side missions, so there is no complete version.

What upset me personally is that I didn't get to keep the class outfit I unlocked before Legends.
I don't think there was even a way to get it at all anymore.
>>
>>738071676
>missing two dungeons and some side missions
this is what made me drop legends after coming back from playing tsw in the past
>>
funcom always somehow fucks up the games
>>
>>738065857
I FUCKING LOVE OLD SCHOOL HIP-HOP
>>
I legitimately think a classic TSW relaunch (Not the Legends garbage) would do decently. The MMO landscape is VERY different nowadays and I think there is a greater interest for conspiracy stuff or modern supernatural settings.
>>
>>738062860
One of the missions in the first town requires you to translate a morse code audio transmission.
Like, you just have to do it, there's no other way. Literally the coolest quest in any MMO ever
>>
>>738062860
I disliked how railroaded it was.
>Become a gigagoy forcefully if you chose Illuminati as your faction
>They even threaten to subject you to an eternity of torture for disobedience
>Choosing dragon leads to a bugwoman forcing herself on your character
>Templars are the only marginally okay faction
>You're not told any of these developments until you're too late and committed to the faction
I'm not sure why I was even allowed to choose with the filth gods if that's the kinda narrative I'm gonna be subjected to.
>>
>>738072694
The audio was legitimately too quick to decipher until people recorded it, slowed it down, and posted the answer online. It's probably their worst quest.
>>
I wish all MMOs had singleplayer offline versions of them so I would just be able to play them whenever without servers going down or players dying out or devs deciding I'm not allowed to say the word "cunt" anymore.
>>
>>738066639
Man, I thought I was just too retarded to appreciate the depth of the story whenever I was confused about some of the things people talked about.
I'm still not sure what I was supposed to take away from that initial Lilith reveal in Legends or why I just kinda hung out with her on the roof in Tokyo until she got yoinked by a bunch of angels. And why fuck all happened between those two events involving her.
>>
>>738065042
The Secret World =/= Secret World Legends
>>
>>738073106
Illuminati were peak. Best city, best color, best npc's, best side stories. The Templar and dragon had no flavour compared to them.

It holds a really odd place in my heart. I remember going to the zoo with my folks and while I was there, I applied to get into the beta. I was so hyped for it because I was so into ocult monster of the week shows like X-files and Kolchak the night stalker. Eventually I got in but my damned system's cpu died mid install but I never got a replacement for months down the line. When I did finally get around to playing the game it had already launched and recieved the dead game title. But it was awesome. I genuinely enjoyed the experience. I got my then girlfriend at the time to play it with me and we both thought it had solid ground despite lots of issues. Then years go by. And we were planning a zoo trip. And we get there and discover it was the very same one that my folks took me to all those years ago. Except this time, I was strolling around my own baby. And every time I go there, every single time, I get a coffee at the place I first applied for the beta for The Secret World. I probably think about this game more than most. Anyway, gay blog shit over.
>>
Most fun class? I kinda want to try it now.

Tried to play it for the first time like two years ago, made a shitty Shirou Emiya, went Templar because Emiya would go Templar.

It was great and i loved every part of it, yes even the combat, but it really did feel like i missed out on something by a couple decades and there was no way to get the things i missed back, but i guess that's the problem with old as sin MMOs.
>>
>>738063241
The puzzles in this game are S-tier if you don't look up the answers and just sit down and try to figure them out while immersed in the haunted setting.

This game's world had incredible franchise potential and could be an easy competitor to all those World of Darkness VN flops that keep coming out if Funcom weren't run by idiots.
>>
>>738062860
This is pretty much one of the only instance of a game I can think of where I didn't hate at least one npc. Funcom is such a goddamn monkeypaw of a studio. They come up with some of the best content but their execution of said content and business decisions are always so mind bogglingly retarded.
>>
Callie James is my wife. Also is it me or is the wiki scrubbed from the internet? There ain't shit anymore. Also this thread kinda makes me want to try to replay the OJ, would be lonely though. Did they make the OJ content soloable when it was sundowning?
>>
Illuminati for life.
