It's very good. Exploration is pretty linear but the combat is excellent, the bosses are all unique and interesting with the final boss being perhaps my favorite final boss of any game I've played, and the story is extremely well-told with interesting characters. I beat it a couple of weeks ago.

It's a mediocre Metroidvania but an amazing game anyway because the combat is legit fucking amazing. All the boss fights are great and the final boss is one of my favorite fights in any game and I've been playing them for 30 years at this point.
The story and characters also are great, especially in a genre that usually pushes such things to the background.

Highly recommend it.

Fanart often grows to fill thematic or tonal gaps in the work. Nine Sols is a game fairly bereft of peace, safety, and true closure. It's no mystery why a lot of the more serious fanart leans that direction.

I proposed they partially remove the Tianhuo gene, partially diminishing their intelligence and humanoidal forms possibly in exchange for a shortened lifespan temporarily without Tianhuo. While they would all still inevitably die Tianhuo, they'd now be able to at the very least live normal (shorter) lives until then.
I imagined them as looking like one number higher on the furry scale. So like a 3 or 4 in picrelated.

Agreed. There's another pure misery game on the catalog and it gets fanart of the cute characters happy. Because in-universe they're never allowed to be happy, and people just want to see the poor bastards happy for once.
