the game is good but nowhere near the quality of the original director's cut game, it's fanwank if you care at all about the story structure of the first game

never felt any boss was spongy, have you tried hitting their weak points or getting close with a shotgun?

i barely used vehicles, theres lots of other ways to make traversal fun and engaging, it sounds like your a boring person playing the game in the most boring way possible

if youre just doing a main story run i agree with this, but its not an issue if youre completing sub/standard/ orders/aid requests/ scavenging materials/building/taking out camps etc after each story mission

The first game felt like magic, a comfy hiking simulator with some action in a deeply intriguing sci fi world and world class cinematic presentation and completely bat shit nonsense lore.

The second game is more of the same, but there's a lot more Metal Gear and "video game" missions to do now. More weapons, more tools, more build variety. Lots of combat and stealth and boss fights to flex the tools. There's a lot less friction as well, you traverse much faster and gain access to traversal tools far quicker. Far less missions require you to actually use all of your tools and strand system to traverse the area on foot. I only had a few on-foot treks in DS2 that challenged me with environmental hazards, and they were mostly side missions. Compared to DS1 where you were consistently forced to carry items on your back and you were consistently tripping and falling down, especially before you have the exoskeletons

I wanted vehicles to get massive nerfs and ziplines too. Instead the truck can literally go anywhere now. In 250 hours i havent managed to get a vehicle stuck on terrain anywhere because they have specifically made it so that vehicles can technically always jump out of a situation.
Ziplines now bend and are even more overpowered. 1 click gameplay.
And to top it all off we can now hoverboard around, and they are not expensive to fabricate.
Oh and the terrain specifically having gaps in it that perfectly fit the width of the truck. It feels so artificial. In DS1 there were places where getting vehicles was possible but really tough, and you had the chance that the vehicle would get stuck for good.
Kojima really did go for the braindead mode this time round.

that's a pisstake, I am playing on ITW with optimal weapons but it doesn't detract from the fact that the neil is a horrific fight sequence that can be stunlocked with triple tap because poor design and the octopus only needed one fight to drill home how derivative 'glowing weak point' is

they are not optional, they are poorly implemented, the odradek is supposed to elicit a sound which alerts nearby enemies to your batman vision, but does not. lethal kills are supposed to trigger a voidout if a BT finds the corpse (leading to mandatory corpse disposal) but the vast majority of the weapons you get do not kill

Anyone playing on Linux? I can't boot the game up anymore without it crashing after the last update. I'm 100 hours in and I'm pretty sure I'm in the last stretch so it's kind of a shame to lose my momentum.

I'm almost done, but skipped reading the thread to reply to avoid any possible spoilers so some points may be reiterated. It's okay, but a step down from the first game. You'll enjoy it if you liked the first DS

There's hardly a plot, and instead, you're whipped into returning to a hub ship incessantly to see Kojima's two new ugly celebrity crushes
bounce around in another wholesome chungus scene that leaves Sam doing an awkward smile in silence on the periphery. Only after each Tomorrow/Rainy heartwarming moment are you allowed to take a Main Order
I don't think Norman Reedus has had more than 200, maybe even 100 lines in the story dialogue in the 50 hours I've played.
The deliveries are about the same including the pain of inconsistent cargo damage.
This time however you do get a rad surfboard that's fun when you're allowed to use it in the Chiral Network.
What little combat exists is very fun if easy, and the bosses are great spectacles if too easy on To the Wilder difficulty.
One final specific gripe, but the music integration for deliveries is much more frequent and poorly done, lacking any real emotional catharsis or impact like the first title.

God willing this is the last time I will ever see Elle Fanning in my life

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is not a video game. It's Kojima's $100 million excuse to hang out with Hollywood celebrities while you hold the left stick forward for 40 hours. Almost every location has a flat path straight to it. You can make any delivery by holding forward or driving a truck. Congratulations, you just experienced "gameplay." The game throws numerous tools at you that you absolutely never need. It's like being handed a Swiss Army knife to eat soup — the equivalent of playing Doom where enemies fall down without you ever pulling the trigger.

But the crown jewel — the absolute proof Kojima doesn't make games — is the "Pretend You Won" button. Die to a boss and the game literally asks if you want to skip it. Pick it and you get a SLIDESHOW of how the fight would have played out. The results screen reads "Imaginary Victory" with a drawing of Sam sleeping. Even the protagonist doesn't care. No game should let you skip core combat. That's not accessibility — that's a confession. That's Kojima saying "gameplay doesn't matter, just watch my movie." The single greatest evidence he's NOT a game developer — just a film director accidentally given a dev kit instead of a camera.

Did this cinematic walking screensaver win GOTY? NO. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — an actual VIDEO GAME with actual GAMEPLAY — bodied Kojima's celebrity meet-and-greet simulator at The Game Awards, Golden Joysticks, DICE, and GDC, racking up 291 GOTY wins in 2025.

But don't worry — his own game taught us the solution. He can just Pretend He Won. Skip the awards, read a little slideshow that says "Kojima won GOTY" with a picture of him sleeping. Imaginary Victory. Kojima — put down the controller. Pick up the camera. Stick to making movies. You clearly want to. You were never one of us.
