Old games used post processing effects to cover up digital flaws, and it helped the atmosphere at the same time.
Remasters want to show their graphics without understanding the atmosphere and then get angry when they spend all their time on a texture increase for it to be covered by fog. But ffs they lack yhe ability to see how the minor differences build up to a whole

Most of NightDive's remasters are great. The philosophy behind their graphical enhancements is basically to make the games look like you remember them looking, as opposed to something like the horror show in pic related from Aspyr. But one of the most important aspects is that you can always turn the enhancements off completely, which is a feature I greatly miss in many re-releases, and is an option that I think should be mandatory. Because if they don't, then that basically dooms the original version of the game from ever being available on modern platforms. There's no way we'll ever see the original Demon's Souls or Dark Souls again now, so the only options are dusting off original hardware or emulation.

It's not just the brightness.
They broke the roughness maps so light doesn't bounce off surfaces as it should.
The new lighting is more technically demanding, but the original had better art direction because roughness map are made by hand.

They did fuck up the lighting but there were some actually good changes in Legendary Edition. One example is they removed a wall in a major mission hub that was originally only there to help the environment load. Another example is they changed a sidequest villain to be the right race (his motivation literally made no sense as a human, but they just slapped a human model on him originally). I think they also made it so you could dash for longer without getting tired. I don't like the changes to EXP balancing and allowing assault rifles on all classes though, that makes the game too easy.

What NightDive typically does in their remasters is just bridge that gap. Slightly increase the texture resolution, slightly increase the polycount on the models, subtly improve the lighting system, fix up some technical issues like the wonky camera projection in early 3D shooters like Blood. But the enhancements are still mostly recognizable as the original thing, and not something completely re-imagined, nor do they force a bunch of blurry filters on everything.
