Gacha games and other gaas are concentrated experiences of games -- the most addicting and pleasurable qualities of games are magnified to absurd levels. These games were engineered to make you spend as much time as possible on them. The purpose behind it all... the message... the art... Everything was stripped away to make more room for the base qualities of video games. It cannot be overstated how damaging this is to the medium -- gaas devs are in a race to the bottom to see how much time they can make someone spend rather than how much enjoyment they can provide. Or what story they want to tell. Or anything other than meeting their next quota. Stay away from gaas.
>>
>>738077049

They are popular for a reason. The artificial progression, the meaningless improvement, the fake socialization, gambling/random rewards, sex appeal, and the illusion of a tight-knit community thanks to the internet all combine to make everything about gacha games appealing -- like a highly-processed, shelf-stable, mass-produced bag of chips.

He worded it awkwardly, but the point is there. Gacha delivers concentrated pleasure in doled out proportions. In abundance at first, showering you with free currency, then it suddenly stops to force a withdrawal, to get the player to continue the rush by spending money. Drug dealers operate on the same principle, first dose for free, then they'll be crawling back for more no matter the cost. Pretty sure online casinos also give you some free rolls when you start.
Everything about gacha is a carefully crafted psychological manipulation with decades of experience and market research behind it.

the major difference is that real games aren't designed with indentured servitude in mind, you can pick up and play them whenever you like and however you like, unlike fomoslop
>>
>>738084049
what even is the pleasure gamblers get? like i understand the allure of potentially winning, but do you just have to be stupid enough to think you stand a chance of leaving with more than you started with? playing games designed and engineered by the people you're giving money to? (over the entire time you gamble, not just any individual session)

and can you even actually win money in these gacha games? i thought it was all just in-game stuff, like gambling but without even the potential to win anything tangible, as if being a loser wasn't enough, you've begun to derive pleasure from losing even harder or something
>>
>>738089518
There have been some pretty good studies into gambling addiction which enlighten non-addicts into what the high is of gambling. See gambling addicts don't have radically different brain activity when winning or losing, instead the brain lights up like a Christmas tree when doing any form of gambling even when they lose everything. The act of gambling is the high, not winning big.
>>
>>738087956
Some games are made to convey a story that imparts a valuable message to you -- video games as art. Many teach basic important lessons like standing strong through adversity or finding meaning/personal strength.

You eat excessive amounts of pastries when you should be eating a variety of foods of a sensible quantity. You are not a bad person for being fooled. Please stop.

Soon porn/hentai/fan service will be non-existent. Only way to get it is through OF and gacha. The jews won.
>>
>>738089697
that would explain gacha games, it doesn't really explain what exactly is pleasurable about it, though i suppose different people find different things pleasurable

quotes like op's suggest they don't seem to realise what they're even doing though. calling gacha predatory "now" as if that wasn't their reason for existing in the first place
>>
>>738089751
>food analogy
>>
>>738087956
not him but at the end of the day all video gaming is entertainment, if you're entertained by gambling then that much is similar in that respect, but that doesn't make them the same.
in most video games the entertainment comes from things like following the story, testing your motor/reaction skills, etc.

in many ways gacha are the opposite of video games, video games reward skill and practice, rather than luck and money

I remember paying like 60 dollars for Assassins Creed Odyssey. Shit was long, bloated. repeated content, dlc made it a thousand hour game.

I remember paying 60 bucks for Pragmata, 6-8 hour game depending on how you play it. Felt like I should have waited on a sale, waste of money.

Diablo 4, 70 dollar "play a week or two every 3 months" while they dangle 80+ dollar crossover cosmetics on the shop as well as a battlepass.

GaaS are usually free, just do your dailies, get all the free shit, and you'll be fine. Let the whales pay for your content, and pull for characters you like. If you metaslave and pull every character because their on the top of the charts, that's on you.

Seems like we should just stay away from games if we're going with games being engineered to keep people on them for profit because "line must go up". Shit we had single player games release with season passes and never got the DLC they were working on because they didn't make expected revenue during their launch.
