Cutscenes take up a huge majority of the early game, characters feel like something out of Captain Planet with how "wholesome" they are (at least to Miles, Peter seems largely neglected/ignored/dismissed), and the missions, at least up to the point I played, were painful. Miles' school most notably is so goddamn corny. I hate to throw cringe around since it's such an abused term these days, but holy fuck. Yes, literal children are cringe sometimes. But things like saving the mascot outfit from a rival school that more or less go, "Golly gee, you caught us! Good job!", helping that kid ask someone out where he calls you the "Electric Spider" in the most obnoxious voice ever, people hyping up the gamer group at the school, and the graffiti referencing "BIPOC" artists, in which I work in a hyper politically safe/leftist industry, no one fucking uses BIPOC. I'm certainly not asking for some edgy Spiderman game or for the friendly neighborhood character to not help the neighborhood. But the first few hours of the game put me off so hard that I lost any energy for the combat or webslinging. To which felt like more of the same? The glide was okay I guess but felt worse than just webslinging. And the new gadgets/abilities you get just feel tacked on.I don't know, maybe I'm forgetting how the first Spiderman was, but christ, I was bored out of my mind despite enjoying the original immensely. Doesn't help that I know a bunch of the story is kind of lame later on, so I wasn't exactly primed going in for an altogether positive experience. The game seems "fine". I don't detect any presence of an actual human writing them; it feels like a HR committee tried to pick the safest way to make a Spider-Man game imaginable. Not to mention they got rid of the fun gadgets and suit powers on top of neglecting swinging in favour of the Superman 64 style gliding rings, which is just asinine. I like web wings, but they should never ever feel like a replacement for the far more kinetic movement of swinging.

It's worse than bad, it's disappointing. There's a good game here fucked over by some middle management faggot wanting everything under the sun while also shoving in notes they got from SBGs. Cramming the entire black suit saga ALONG with exploring Miles's story was doing too much all at once. Granted Miles confronting Mister Negative is an interesting angle worth exploring, but it isn't given room to run because of the more important Peter stuff. This dual narrative ultimately weakened both characters, and the story suffered with lack of focus. So then we get Kraven killing off the Sinister Six off screen, which no one liked. Also apparently Rhino fucking died in the Miles game from that injury? Okay? I don't even hate the Harry Venom thing, but shit like that is where I draw the line. Then the side missions, THE FUCKING SIDE MISSIONS. So instead of fun random crimes like drug dealers and thieves like the first game, we're bogged down by symbiotes and hunters in the post game. WOW, really fun, Insomniac. Then you got Mysterio trying to reform IN A MILES MISSION. You don't think the message would have hit harder had Quinten had that heart to heart with the seasoned Spidey he's feuded with for years? Then there's that stupid ass Spiderverse side mission featuring a character that was cut from the film, which goes to show you how little communication there was over at SONY. Oh, and who could forget the deaf girl mission? Really glad we could do that......and not explore the dozens of C or D list Spidey bad guys we could see. Fuck. Also I guess Mile's side missions at the university were.....no, they werent endearing or friendly neighborhood like they thought theyd be. I'm doing a fucking project for a lazy ass and helping some loser ask someone to homecoming while people are dying in the streets. Awesome. I never played NG+, that should tell you something
