Maybe it was just the result of someone at SE playing Persona 4 and deciding they should take a crack at a pop soundtrack, but using improvisation to build out some tracks was a really inspired choice that more games should try. Obviously you need live musicians to make it work, but giving some session players a melody to build off of gets you way more music without the composer needing to do extra work and breaks up the monotony of short repeated loops in games.
