how cum all we ever get these days is 3v3 fighting games? what happened to gold old 1v1s with 2v2 as an alternative mode?

Marvel Infinite sucked so hard a lot of people felt it was now their duty to make a fun tag fighter. Dragon Ball FighterZ succeeded, 2XKO didn't. There are still some that we don't know yet if they'll take off.

A proper doubles mode (where all four players are on screen the whole time) is infinitely more fun and dynamic than swap-out 2v2. Unfortunately few games do it. Only upcoming one I can think of is Combo Devils but they're primarily marketing it as 1v1. Nobody really cares for 2v2.

They're both fun in their own right but swap-out is the less chaotic version so it's more applicable for tournaments and stuff but mechanics like cross-assault can grant that feature for a limited time.
MUGEN has 2v2 with all four characters on-screen though iirc
