Why did citybuilders die?
The genre is basically dead and it seems like the only people buying new games are people who played citybuilders 20-30 years ago.
>>
It's just the same old shit with a new coat of paint. There is not really much to innovate on.
>>
I enjoyed playing the original SNES Sim City but all others I tried just don't do the same for me.

I feel the management genre peaked with RCT2 unfortunately.
>>
>>738102973
not true. for example there isn't a single city builder for people with porn addiction. I'm not even sure how you could integrate naked women into a city builder but I'd be excited to try one that does.
>>

>Why did citybuilders die?
Stuck in the same situation survival games are.
Everyone thinks they're gunna be the one to come and revolutionize a formula that cant really be changed. Every title that comes out is just "Gay Sex with Hats on!" levels of lazily slapping a gimmick onto it to make it unique, when really its just yet another Banished/Simcity4 with a texture pack on.
>>
>>738104290
I'm almost positive you are wrong about that. I'm sure I've seen more than one city builder in my exploration of porn games that are partly about building a city and partly about things like breeding the female population.
>>
>>738104290
You just have to fucking stop escaping your fears by burying yourself in addictions.
>>
>>738102884
>Why did citybuilders die?
It fell into the cracks of "too niche for a big-budget title" and "too complex for an indie title". Anyone who doesn't want some brain-dead city painter like Cities Skylines is basically SOL as nothing is going to really going to autistically replicate traffic patterns, crime, the economy, and do so in a way that you could make a sprawling endless megacity, especially if you expected 3D buildings that aren't prerendered.
>>
>>738102884
they're far too video gamey for people today who just end up calling them "games for autists"
>>
I'm still bummed about overthrown.
could have been great but no one bought it so the devs switched to making friend slop
>>
>>738104290
>for example there isn't a single city builder for people with porn addiction
its called Free Cities newfag.
>>
>>738102884
City builders are too slow for today's society. People don't have the time to slow down and think about proper road layout, they just want their quick dopamine dosis and move on with their lives.
Sure you could make T-Minus 30 go faster, but would that be a city builder still?
>>
>>738102884
Shit's quirky when you have nothing else to do on your PC, but most people are never going to make anything near an optimal city before they move on to play something else.
>>
>>738104692
more or less
>>738102884
They get old quickly
A normal person plays a citybuilder for 2 hours and then never plays it again... I've been meaning to play Skylines since... dunno... maybe more than a decade, but always putting it off lol

Tropico 4 was a successful city builder because it blended the tycoon aspect in it (basically a "banana republic tycoon")... yet even they struggled to hit the nail on the head, and sequels to Tropico 4 are practically shovel-ware

Otherwise:
- in reality there are very few (like a few dozens, total) planned cities... meaning that they followed a citybuilder-like procedure... and most of them are utter faliures
- you can only avoid it if you make a tycoon game that can realistically influence the larger city around it in a top-down manner (like a World Fair Tycoon or smth) because let's be real, you need to be a TYCOON to bring about such change
- the third alternative is to bear the irony of micromanagement on your sleeve, with cynicism, like in "Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic"... although I'd play a "factory town tycoon" or "mining town tycoon," gulag or no gulag

Thank you for reading my blog post

Citybuilder is a game you do while multitasking. That's why it's need to be comfy.

doesn't openTTD scratch much of the same ich but far better than sim city 2000, 4 or cities skylines did?
I have played non of these games, it's just my outside perspective
>>
>>738102884
all the city builder fans decided to move onto RTS and complain about them not being city builders instead.
>>
>>738102884
Too complicated for normies also the reigning economic system in these games is too problematic and chudly for modern times.
>>
>>738106305
>also the reigning economic system in these games is too problematic and chudly for modern times
Wasn't there a dev for one of these types of games that revealed they had to "break the rules" and basically cheat for communist societies to work because if they had to abide by the same rules as the rest of them did it would fail every single time?
>>
>>738102884
>no combat (other than disasters)
>no waifus
>no goon content

No reason to play those games
>inb4 porn addict

Not all live lives where having sex if like taking a shit.
>>
>>738102973
Innovation is highly overrated. Develop a formula that works and then just slap a new coat of paint and a new setting on it every couple of years. We are past the innovation stage in gaming, everything has already been done. At this point you either embrace the steady flow of reheated slop in your personal favorite flavor or you just stop playing video games.
>>
>>738102884
Citybuilder? yeah theyre ok.

Logistics management is better. Supply and demand, managing railways, finding profitable niches. That tickles the autism just right.

lol, lmao.

They didn't you're just retarded.
Go play Against the Storm or something.
>>
>>738106210
Psst.

You want some efficient fuckin' train lines? Look up diverging diamonds with flyovers. Trains will never wait at a junction again. You won't see this shit on the wiki. It'sthe hard shit. The road engineer fantasy shit you can't build in real life because you can't afford no fuckin flyover.
>>
>>738105020
For me the problem is they're either ruined by some modern launcher/account/connectivity bullshit, or they're less city builders and more traffic management/logistics simulators.
>>738102884
The genre peaked with SC2k. Everything after has just been inferior. And yes, I know 3000 had a good aesthetic, but goddamn the tax nagging was obnoxious.
>>
genre peaked too early. sim city 2000 is the GOAT
>>
I pirated cities skylines 2, it's ok

I think the genre has been chanced for the better. Soviet Republic is the only city building game that lets you actually build a city. Everything else at this point is just point and click city painting
I now have the 'tower crane' test. If there's a tower crane in your city building game but you don't need to transport it, your game is garbage

I keep forgetting those even exist.

I think SimCity specifically was always its own thing. High Rise City and City: Skylines are only modern equivalents, and even those still focus on other things somewhat.

I think because economy play appeals to more people than straight up city planning. Probably why Anno survives, for example.
>>
>>738102884
They didn't die, the genre was basically perfected.
>>
>>738102884
They didn't. In fact I'd say the genre is thriving.

Automation games replaced city builders for me. There's so much passion in the genre with Factorio, DSP, Mindustry, CoI, fucking Minecraft mods. If I really REALLY want to build a city I'll just play Anno.
