morrowind famously had to employ a trick where the system restarted surreptitiously during loading screens to free memory to keep the game running
anyways, even if you dont really mod, just having the ability to install basic bugfixes or just use the console to unfuck your game instead of being stuck with a broken 100 hour save is beneficial
