If they actually stuck with Source 2 you'd have a very performant modern engine that can still create pretty good modern visuals with a very mature and well-tested toolset. Alyx is genuinely an impressive showcase for the engine, it looks pretty damn good for a game that only asks for an i5-7500, 12GB RAM and a GTX 1060. Performance in 3D is something that engines like Unreal Engine, Unity and Godot struggle with to various degrees and Unity's toolset is haphazard as devs keep implementing new shit to replace old shit with. Garry in his infinite wisdom decided to gut all the things about Source 2 that made people want to develop games in it though. What a fucking waste.
I really like Roblox-like format made for players to try out game after game as they scroll through list of small games. And given standalone game export option with no strings attached, S&box sounds like ideal platform to prototype game ideas. Too bad the platform should actually have players and be alive for it work lmao.But I just like the idea of a free Source 2 SDK too much.Unity lost all good will.UE is too bloated and tailored for cinematic AAA slopa.Godot has that trademark FOSS non-polish.I know s&box isn't really Source 2, but it's the closest thing we will probably ever get.
