Lets get a hidden gem thread going, want to find something new to playI would say >2500 reviews is generous>picFun turn based strategy with eldritch themes. I enjoy the flexibility you get and the sheer number of ways you can fuck the world up, from famine, revolts, corruption, climate change or just outright evil empire. Even has workshop support for new elder gods to play as. High difficulty curve though, but you can tweak the settings until you find a sweet spotIf you enjoy strategy games in general, you will probably have fun
>>738122258Dandy Ace is pretty good, similar to Hades.
>>738122258Played this recentlyPretty looking, but the voxel based construction is a bit too autismo for me.Also the crafting reminded me of vintage story but not in a good way. That all being said, the destruction is fun. Probably worth a pick up on sale
TECHNICALLY its a gem because it has so few steam reviews, but when I saw this I got a shock of childlike excitement. I remember playing this shit as a kid since you could get a free demo and it played like diabloHonestly, it holds up pretty well, but it definitely has all the quirks for games this old
I've been enjoying this recently. Stylish game. It's a roguelike dungeon crawler, feels quite hack and slash. Honestly good fun to just boot up, do a run and chill.Probably doesn't count since it has 5k review though
>>738122258This game reminds of That Which Sleep. Still mad, btw.
We have Fallout at home.
>Solo brazilian dev>Basically daggerfall in 2026 mixed with a bit of kenshi>can recruit goblinsIt's rough around the edges but I enjoy it
>>738122258I tried it out and while it was fun I also felt like I was doing random shit and the world collapsed by accident. Did three runs and all of them felt like that. I haven't played in a year, maybe it got better with updates>2500 reviewsI liked NanoApostle
>>738122258If you want to cheese the early game to unlock the gods you can just set the map size to something small like 12 x 12. If only the dude didn't take out the minor deities associated with the holy orders and witch covens. It was cool having an additional layer to contend with that is in the same astral realms as yourself with their power scaling based on the spread of their chosen order. When you successfully banish them all of the nations under their influence suffer bouts of madness because you just buckbroke their god in real time.
>>738123485I actually really enjoyed the style of corrupting holy orders to work for you. I really enjoy that aggressive and passive playstyles work. Didn't play with the minor gods but that does sound cool. Shame it looks like development is dead, but it looks pretty complete
>>738123286>it was fun I also felt like I was doing random shit and the world collapsed by accident. Did three runs and all of them felt like that. One of the mods that adds extra autonomy to the AI has a habit of doing that. Hell just watching the game go on long enough and they start contracting demons and zombie armies or assassinating each other in coups all without your direct involvement.
>21 reviewshttps://store.steampowered.com/app/2996020/JRoguePG/Name basically explains what it is, you create your 4 man party of JRPG tropes, gradually unlock more and try to get as far as possibleCombat is pretty tough, so learning what enemies do and what they're weak to, as well as making a decent party composition are essentialObviously its a bit jank and lacking in optics because its RPGmaker, but it's also very cheap for the amount of content
>play as little customizable orb guy>have two NPC allies, also customizable>drive mecha with swappable parts (body, left+right arms, legs, backpack) and tactics for NPCs>fight in "campaign" missions against groups of drones en masse>advance campaign missions to next tier of difficulty and get new parts by competing in arena against other teams of three NPCs, each with their own basic strategies and styles of fightingVery fun game. You can play a heavy tank, a middleweight jack of all trades, a lightweight gotta go fast. Not every weapon is great against every enemy, so swapping loadouts for more efficiency is involved.
>>738122258Sounds cool. I'll try that.
>https://store.steampowered.com/app/2081970/Swirl_Wtch/HEAVILY underrated stealth game. You're piloting a small spaceship in a trippy world with psychedelic visuals and audio and sneak through the clouds of a gas giant while doing various proc generated missions: sabotage, theft, kidnappings, rescue, assasinations, intel gathering etc. Ships actually kind of move like submarines and both you and the enemies rely on sonar, LIDAR and sound to find each other. Enemies actually have kind of smart and complex behavior, getting detected is pretty stressful because the enemies DON'T fuck around and will definitely make you feel outnumbered & outgunned if you piss them offGreat game, shame it went so under the radar
https://store.steampowered.com/app/3594120/Brush_Burial_Gutter_World/>>738124589Another good stealth action game, you play as some demon succubus running around environments and breaking necks with your thighs or tail. Can be surprisingly high octane with action too
>>738123209It's a miracle of EA desu, no other game ever updates this frequently with cool stuff every weekhttps://store.steampowered.com/app/3646460/Devil_Spire_Falls/
>>738122258The game seemed like it would be the kind of game I'd like, but it was lame. It just felt like you were doing random things to a random world, which had predictable results, which still felt random. It just wasn't reactive at all. Like you could just corrupt the queen of the land, which isn't even something you do directly, but just happened ... again randomly ... because you corrupted her realm, but nothing really happened as the consequence. Peasants didn't rise up, no foreign forces invaded her, no paladin order set up their own counter-state. It feels like you are just speeding up the inevitable decay of a world fated to die.
>>738123209>>738124940About to dl the game, you guys got any tips? The UI looks monstrous so I am expecting a very hard to penetrate game full of soul

Darkwood but worse
>>738134674it isn't a roguelite. dev dropped a massive update that included a roguelite mode like 3 years after release. >>738134740Our Adventurer Guild? Much better. Iron Oath? Never played. Looked nice but seemed like gameplay was quite weak. Hero Lodge is just head and shoulders above other turn-based-tactics games in terms of gameplay and encounter design. It manages to be a genuine tactics game that makes you actually think about fights instead of just executing (and fine tuning a bit here and there) a combat algorithm that you mastered in the first 15-20% of the game while ALSO not being just a puzzle game with a genre skin on it.
>>738135153Good thing you mentioned it, the visuals would've repelled me otherwise. It's not as bad as this ugly Snoy 3d thingy or absolute Tactics though. >>738122258Northern Journey. Anybody who's played it knows that this is THE underappreciated gem of the last 20 years. It's a highly atmospheric FPS steeped in Norwegian folklore made by just ONE highly autistic Norwegian guy. >>738135893Zero Company looks like it will be a fine nuxcom-like. Not my fav subtype though I enjoyed xcom2. I'm more apt to play Xenonauts 2 at some point.
Interesting approach in term of game mechanics, it's like a mix between a text heavy game like DE and something like Age of Decadence, probably the best depiction of necromancy next to Wrath of the Righteous.
>>738137887Consider my interest piqued.
This game deserves way more praise. It's Skyrim meets Dark Souls and Arthurian mythos is weird as fuck. I really love the combat and dialogues. It's low budget and it shows on the technical aspect but I can get over it.
>>738122258Fuckton of Chinese made games flying under the radar. Some with rune titles but actually playable in English. Others require translation patches.

>>738138304If you've played one cultivation simulator you have played them all
>>738138304I wish they made more actual fantasy RPGs rather than bullshit cultivators, though.
>>738125648UI really isn't that bad, it's really the exploration/ combat. Suffers from monotony. When haggling, pay attention to how much it adds to the person's friendliness, determines whether you're over-paying or under-selling for the you're buying/ selling. Joining factions really does help a lot for getting items and money, but you explore, you get so much money you're literally weighed down by it. If you can learn at least the bag of holding spell to carry shit. Charge-casting powers the spell further, same with melee. Magic, like other RPGs of similar scope, is fucking broken. Have fun.
Lost Flamehttps://store.steampowered.com/app/856570/Lost_Flame/Traditional Roguelike meets Dark Souls. Really well executed. Innovates heavily but maintains trad roguelike feel. Great presentation. Much clearer than many trad roguelikes, especially helpful given how different abilities can interact (also friendly fire).
Fountains. Most similar to Hyper Light Drifter but with a more fantasy world/atmosphere but plays a lot like ALttP. Fun gadgets, great exploration, overall, and decent combat. Only major gripe is that the bosses can be very difficult. At worst, you have about a millisecond to recognize and deal with their attacks. Still really enjoyed it.

>>738122258I'm going to guess it's always indie developers in regards to what classifies as this. My view of that is:Indies don't make hidden gems yet. Not until they start making stealth games and more Deus Ex style FPS RPGs etc. which are the two largest fields that they have trouble producing.Their scope in games right now is meh for anything that matters in the truly niche. We need smaller developers to be able to replicate the scale of early 2000s double A for anything to matter and they all need to be on that page. If they're not then we are not overwhelmed by choice but still at the production levels of basic student project.

>>738147013Recommend it for any old Resident Crisis fans, tons of content for that price tag and neat game mechanics. The biggest issue I had with that was that enemies only really aggro when you shoot at them even on the hardest difficulty you can pick on the first playthrough, meaning you just focus shot tons of walking enemies in large rooms. The next difficulty levels you unlock by completing the game make the enemies more aggressive which feels like they should be normally.

>>738123021Eh, I tried it but it really needs a lot of work. The roguelike elements just feel kind of flimsy. There's just not enough variety to shake up runs. There's almost no variety in terms of enemies and almost no variety in terms of level layouts. Basically it feels like after even a single run, even if it's not a successful run, you've basically seen just about everything the game has to offer so it ends up just feeling like a regular game with permadeath mechanics thrown in to pad it out

>892 Reviews. You are the librarian of a magical university. Your goal is to reshelve literally three thousand books that have been thrown onto the floor by a rogue fairy. You must figure out from each book's title on which of the 31 shelves it belongs. The game is translated from Japanese, so the proper categorizations of some titles are not obvious, and you must figure them out by trial and error. For example:-The shelf labeled "romance novels" actually is for non-mystery novels in general.-Puppet Crafting: An Introductory Guide to Automata and Statues belongs on the art shelf rather than on the magical artifacts and enchanting shelf.-Ultimate Choice: Curry-Flavored Poop or Poop-Flavored Curry? belongs on the psychology shelf.

Genesis Noirhttps://store.steampowered.com/app/735290/Genesis_Noir/A very stylish experience but not so much a game. The biggest positives this time around are the visuals, artstyle, story, and music, which ooze creativity though the story can get cryptic at some points. The only downside I can say is that it not so much a game but an interactive short film of some kind that overstays it's welcome a little bit by the end.

>>738143025I liked Knight's Tale, but it had some serious design issues along with a pretty retarded alignment system that locks you out of a lot of characters if you don't pick exactly what you want, while at the same time not letting you know if you would want it, because there's no way to preview character abilities before getting them.
If you're into Golden Idol type mystery games, and you'd be interested in a detective game with no handholding then I recommend Mystery of the Malign. Someone on /v/ convinced me to play it and it's pretty good. You play as a guy interested in the occult, with your weirdo friends and even weirder wife to help you. Almost the whole game takes place in a museum, and you're just let loose to explore and solve the mystery. I managed to do like 95% of the game on my own, but had to use a guide towards the end for some loose ends. That's the problem with a game that gives you so little assistance, you're likely to miss out on a mechanic or a clue. It's kinda for "hardcore" fans of the genre, but it's worth trying.
>>738188841it's just a family friendly ps1 game lol
>>738189012I really enjoyed the morality system of Knight's Tale, except for the fact that being "neutral" is just a huge disadvantage and you should go all out in whatever alignment you choose from the beginning to unlock all the characters. And also I think the protagonist should've had a customizable class, because what's the point in unlocking a bunch of tank characters if your main guy is a tank.
>>738138304>42% positivewhat happened this time
>>738122438This game looked really pretty, but the game play is absolute ass
>>738189165Yeah, the morality system looked good on paper, but all the strongest characters are evil pagans and if you play on the highest difficulty, you kind of need that strength to get through the game. When it gets to courts of summer and winter, the difficulty spikes absurdly and if you up until that point had been using archers, you will feel just how bad of a class they are. Lack of random missions to go out on to level up your lacking characters instead of putting them into "Training" was also a misstep in my opinion, they game was too strongly linear. It would have been nice to be able to just grind up random shit to experiment instead of consistently ending up in situations where you HAVE to do the main story because there's nothing else left to do.
>>738122258>recettearYou get to have both a shop and have fun with trade autism and it has a diablo-lite mode. Both of the modes feed into and support the other so you get variation while making progress. It's honestly really fun.>AgarestMarketed itself as soft-porn haremslop because that's what a lot of anime was during that time. It's more or less just a strategy game with a decent story and some cute girls you can interact with a fair bit.. it even has some decent male characters too. The game's good but suffers from the "true" route shit that many japanese games have. Honestly would still recommend it you'll probably find more than a few characters you like and it's fun to play if you don't mind it being turn based.>Core keeperNot sure if this one counts as a "hidden gem" really but it's not as known as let's say, Terraria. I like the Tails of Iron games, they're fun 7/10s. Beautiful art, cool looking medieval weapons and armor, fine 2D BamHam combat and the most simplistic Metroidvania mechanics. It's also narrated by the Witcher guy.
>>738189687Only played the first one. Presentation is lovely and the game has some cool twists and areas.Bamham combat got somewhat annoying (literally Simon says) and wished the equipment system was more in-depth. But regardless, the second game probably deserves more reviews.
>>738185856It's just another "copy Dark Souls but not understand why they made the decisions they did".Like for example, one of the very first areas in the game is a brutal scaffolding platforming section with infuriating pushing enemies. And then platforming is irrelevant for the rest of the game. It's like they thought "this is something Miyazaki would do" and not get it at all.

>>738190927This is maybe a couple years ago now, but he posted once about it being hard making a fantasy game. For Northern Journey he could just add his hobbies to the game, like diving and hiking, and use folklore from his childhood. And that resulted in a very engaging game. But now he couldn't rely on that anymore. I'm sure a creative guy like that should be able to do it, but he must have hit a wall somewhere in the development.

The Knightlinghttps://store.steampowered.com/app/1471650/The_Knightling/the knightling is what i would affectionately describe as a gamecube or ps2 game. vibrant with colors, restrained in its scope but fantastic in its execution and gameplay, with a ton of heart to back it up.don't be too fooled by the open-world tag or how people discuss this game : at its core, the knightling offers a map with the usual suspects (towers, sidequests, collectibles) but it's all very restrained. you aren't going to do 200 sided quests. you aren't going to collect 500 artifacts. you aren't going to activate 75 towers. it offers a concise experience, with a focused narrative and a strong layer of charm to tie it all together, with some fantastic movement and fun platforming.as a weaker point i would highlight the combat - though i had no personal issue with it and found it serviceable (and even enjoyable) - but the average person will expect some epic combat, especially based off the trailers. while you can pull some cool moves, your arsenal is limited even with upgrades, and you are not about to pull combo clips to put in a youtube compilation. it has more in common with something like zelda than devil may cry.
>>738189052I tried the demo of this. Didn't really get into it but I'm willing to give it a second try because it looks like my sort of jank.
This is the most fun I've ever had trying to get all achievements in a game. I can't really explain what it is I like about it so much. You're looking for your family's killer, and he can be a random NPC in an open world. So you do missions to learn more about what he looks like. But you could just find him randomly. It's also very goofy, you can draw your gun in any conversation and cock it right in their face. Everyone is killable.

The Séance of Blake Manorhttps://store.steampowered.com/app/1395520/The_Sance_of_Blake_Manor/Séance of the Blake Manor is simply a well-written gothic mystery adventure/investigation game that I want to appreciate. Compared to Obra Dinn’s abstract, minimal-guidance structure that relies heavily on pure deduction, this game provides much more support through context and a steady stream of information, much like The Forgotten City.Séance of the Blake Manor is especially appealing to whom enjoys classic gothic literature. Its tone and atmosphere feel like gothic novels, where the supernatural is intertwined with psychological tension, guilt, and ambiguity. It maintains a similar sense of atmosphere, a closed space filled with secrets, characters shaped by hidden desires and unresolved pasts, and a constant negotiation between the rational and the inexplicable. Everyone in the game seems to have unfinished business with the dead, and in turn, some of the dead also carry unresolved ties to the living.
>>738192642How does investigation works? Never saw that well. Implemented in a game. The reason is you can't fuck up. Games patiently wait until you solve the puzzle.

Best thread in fucking ages. I've added about ten games to my cart from recommendations ITT.My contribution is Sol Cesto (1600 reviews). It's a dungeon crawler distilled into its purest form. Every floor is a 4x4 grid. Each tile can have a monster, heal, trap, treasure. You click a row and have a certain chance of landing on any one of the four tiles in that row. You get different teeth that can improve/lessen your chance to land on certain tiles. Example:>+20% for physical tiles>-20% for magic tilesYou use those percentages to calculate the odds of you landing on your preferred tile. Every enemy has a magic or physical rating, and so do you. If your skill is equal to or less than the enemy's, you defeat him. So if you have 3 physical and the enemy has 3, you beat him, but if he has four you still beat him but take one damage. You have to clear a certain number of tiles (usually 5 or so) to advance to the next floor. Plenty of unlocks and a really cool artstyle. Works on Steam Deck for anyone playing there. Try it out, it's pretty cool and I haven't played anything like it before.https://store.steampowered.com/app/2738490/Sol_Cesto/

These games have sub 4k reviews so I know some of you will yell at me and say they aren't hidden but I genuinely love them and not enough people play/talk about them.>https://store.steampowered.com/app/1903620/Killer_Frequency/Love letter to 70s slasher films. You play a radio DJ in a small town who for extremely contrived reasons becomes the 911 operator as well. A killer is on the loose and attacking people. You are on the line with would be victims and have to figure out how to get them through the ordeal alive. Great balance of humor and tension and the game opens up in fun ways. Made by Team 17 of all people (they made the Worms games back when they were good then did shovelware for decades, then made this game, then went back to shovelware)>https://store.steampowered.com/app/594330/Visage/Best PT ripoff I've ever played. Genuinely spooked me and does a great job building dread without an overreliance on jump scares. Only shitty part is trying to get the true end but the true end is underwhelming to the point that I would genuinely suggest you not even bother with it.>https://store.steampowered.com/app/32340/LOOM/Cheating because this is an OLD Scumm game from LucasArts back when they were gods among developers.Extremely interesting fantasy setting where you play the last of an ancient order of weavers. Your other guild members have all vanished and you travel fantastic landscapes and use traditional Adventure Game tactics to solve the mystery of what happened. Loom is a lot easier than Monkey Island or other more famous LucasArts adventure games so it's got a bit of a bad rep because of that but the visuals are so fantastic that I think it's worth a play.>https://store.steampowered.com/app/609490/Minit/Plays like a top-down Zelda. You find a cursed sword that gives you 60 seconds of life. You have to make it to checkpoints or solve a puzzle/gather information in that minute in order to progress and get further in your next life. Really fun.

Incredibly fun tactics game. Imagine Xcom, but your characters are a lot more powerful than the enemy, and you regain your AP with every kill. The point is to string together a big combo by killing enemies in such a way that you can finish a whole level in just a few turns. And there's a system where you can change your stats, so for one level I just gave my guy max movement points and ran through the whole thing. It's very arcadey, but great.

Void rains upon her heart is a boss rush shoot em up game that I really enjoyed. Majority of the bosses have multiple levels of difficulty with increasingly complex bullet patterns. The game also adjustes it's diffculty depending on your performance: beating bosses flawlessy leads you to facing tougher enemies much faster compared to the guy constantly taking damage. Main gamemode is rougelike but also has some additional ones like quickplay for learning bosses. >inb4 came out in 2018 still early accessThe game has plenty of content already (766 acheivements and most of them unlock new content) and gets multiple updates each month. >>738169962>>738170338Love me some TDs. I'll throw Deathtrap into the pile, which was actually recommended to me in another one of these threads. Fun TD, you get a little RPG character to run around with and use active abilities during the level, and they've got classes and items and talent trees and stuff. Nothing super complex but it's a fun addition.https://store.steampowered.com/app/310510/Deathtrap/Also: Cataclismo. It's a city builder/defense game, but the gimmick is that you build your own walls, lego-style. Units gain bonuses from a variety of placeable items and conditions (are they protected from the weather? Are they high enough off/low enough to the ground for their weapons to be maximally effective?), so you're mainly thinking about how to tinker with your city walls so as to squeeze the most value out of the units you have. Lots of fun.https://store.steampowered.com/app/1422440/Cataclismo/
>>738180818>HOLEOnly one I recognized on the list but it's fun. Super basic but it successfully makes you feel cool playing it, and the controls are gimmicky in a good way. More often than not, if you try to push, you are found far too quickly, and for better or worse, the more physical or direct gods are rather shitty to play due to the "you have been found" levels. I remember playing as the insect god where you try to build hives and send out soldiers and workers, and you are instantly found, then the Chosen One homes in on you like a Patriot missile. That said, it might be due to how you explicitly need to play each god very differently, and what worked on one god might be a waste of time with the other. Finding that out, however, is an annoying procedure. In addition, many gameplay systems feel artificially limited, and some fantasies aren't well thought through.

Seeing anons play obscure games made me realize I'm not a real gamer.
Into The Dead: Our Darkest Days for me. It's basically This War of Mine with zombies and more fleshed out no pun intended. Really nice environments and can be very intense. Still in EA but gud devs with big regular updates and full release this year. I recommend
>>738208153I used that expression loosely, as I didn't want to type too much and couldn't think of a better word, maybe just "incremental shit". The crystal you collect, harder difficulties and bosses being locked, same for unlocking boss/item preview with the crystal currency, unlocking stuff through no miss, no bomb, destroying all breakable parts of a boss and whatever else, granted I won't mind if those can be grinded on quickplay, which I assume is boss pratice, rather than actual runs and hope for the boss to show up. I will keep playing, it's good enough (shmups are easy to please me) and it's cheap enough. The only thing that bothered me enough was the baby tier difficulty, but the last boss (of the 1st run anyway) and the one I fought before it were quite enjoyable.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2435240/Sulphur_Memories_Alchemist/Unique story-focused traditional roguelike laser-focused on crafting potions to handle everything. More outside-the-box puzzles and less tactical combat than most RLs.https://store.steampowered.com/app/2139300/Redemption_Reapers/Fairly challenging linear TRPG focused on careful positioning for team-up attacks. The storytelling is really "love it" or "hate it". It has the feeling of reading a fantasy novel in a language you don't quite understand. The story, characters and enemy design suggest depth which is never explained or explored and where different themes and plot points are given seemingly random emphasis.https://store.steampowered.com/app/1897650/Dream_Tactics/Light-hearted TRPG with some cardslop mechanics. Oninaki is the last of the 3 games Tokyo RPG Factory developed during its existence. Very melancholic story, gamepal smoewhat simplistic, and reasonably good graphics reminiscent of Harvestella. 332 reviews.https://store.steampowered.com/app/987720/ONINAKI/
>>738209832Don't feel bad about it. Most people only play the ultra popular stuff.Even when you see indie shit that pops up on /v/'s catalog usually it's been filtered and already hit the mainstream.I think it's like 90% of people on steam only play the same 10 games, then you've got the core gamers that just buy triple A shit and sub 1% that buy and try niche stuff.
>>738209832nah, obscure shit is usually obscure for a reason, and you have to be into thatsometimes I enjoy an interesting game more than I enjoy a good game
>>738210538Yeah, I am minorly perturbed when people claim to be "indie gamers" and you ask them which ones they play and they say:>Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Slay The Spire, Dave the Diver, Silksong, etc. They're just a slightly different variant of normie. You're still only playing popular stuff.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/234390/Teleglitch_Die_More_Edition/my honest recommendation
>>738210306Kek if you think this game is going under the radar.
>>738210760There's nothing wrong with being into those games, but the real beating heart of the indie scene is players that are willing to look for games that appeal to their own tastes. Back in the early 00s it was prowling flash portals to find a game to your liking, or lurking tigsource for new projects. Nowadays most of it is posted to twitter so actually finding games is a lot harder if you arent already where the devs are or are camping steam's recent releases and demos.Hidden gem threads are also pretty decent for disseminating what games are worth keeping an eye on
>>738210856Well, it seems its garnered some attention from the last I've seen it... kinda glad knowing it wont be a flop it was super fun!
>>738209832You are more than fine just playing the popular and indie-popular games. Most obscure games posted here range from mediocre to above average. You're not missing anything, these threads are for people who like being hipsters from time to time, like me, or people who play videogames for 40 hours a week, consistently and throughout several years. You need to shrug off this silly "real gamer" perspective, they are tools to give you pleasure during your time on this planet, there is no street cred to be gained from being a "real gamer".
>>738122258Not sure how hidden this one is, but it does have under 2500 reviews. If you thought XCOM Enemy Unknown was fun but wished it had more mechanical depth, you should definitely play Cyber Knights. Plus the devs are based and are releasing constant content updates. It's pretty much like getting a free DLC every few months.
>>738211287I wish more games developed their own systems or took more inspiration from games of the past instead of trying to ape the nu-com. Every single turn based tactical game today is trying to be another xcom. I've already beat fucking xcom and I thought its systems were crap, especially the two action garbage and "enemies get a free turn when they notice you" shit.
>>738211586Dead Hand (shilled earlier in the thread) has granular action points a la JA2 and always simulated enemies, none of that pod nonsense. It's a single unit roguelike, though, not a squad based tactical game.
>>738202787This game is great. The sequels are okay, they add some cool stuff but I think the higher complexity also caused them to lose some of the charm and it made the level design worse overall. Plus the story gets kinda lame as the focus shifts away from the based retard protagonist of the first game.
>>738211287Anymore similar customize-your-own-party games like these but a bit older for my windows 7 rig? Like I gave Troubleshooter a shot but it stresses my poor machine out D: Honestly XCOM itself would probably run better. I remember giving it a shot a long time ago whenever it was relevant but it sucked ass.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/273070/The_Last_Federation/I've had a lot of fun with this one. Grand strat in space combined with being a single actor like in Mountain Blade, where the goal (ideally) is to get the 8 races in the solar system to bro it up into a federation. To achieve that, you have a ton of options in how you interact with them, and the races themselves are really well differentiated from each other. Maybe what surprised me the most about it is how insanely deep the systems are, yet at the same time it's quite easy to get into. Sometimes you get a shit start where the bug aliens achieve space flight though, and then everyone else is just fucked lol.
>>738211845Battle Brothers?
>>738211845Chroma Squad was entertaining. Pity that they cant sell it in Japan due to legal bullshit.
>>738122258Tyr is a new game, so not really "hidden".https://store.steampowered.com/app/2445260/Tyr/I shill for this because it's the only PvP tank game not pay2win nor pay2progress.Currently in a closed beta. Probably I'll make a thread when is about to be released in Early Access, this summer.
>>738211586> I've already beat fucking xcom and I thought its systems were crap, especially the two action garbage and "enemies get a free turn when they notice you" shit.Cyber Knights uses an AP system, not the two-action system that nuXCOM made popular. Basically everyone has AP (6 AP by default though it's possible to get more in various ways) and you can spend that on actions any way you want. Attacking doesn't automatically end your turn either, so for example if you have a weapon that takes 2AP to fire, you can fire it 3 times in a turn. Also thankfully it doesn't have the dogshit pod activation system that nuXCOM used. Every enemy either starts on the map and moves along preset patrol routes until they either spot you or they get alerted some other way, or they spawn in from doors/elevators/etc at the edge of the map in response to security escalations or ingame events. Whether you get spotted or not (stealth is a viable option in many missions), enemies are always on the turn order so you know when they are going to react to you and they don't get free turns.
>>738212279That sounds considerably better.
>>738212073Getting Tread Marks vibes
>>738211845Maybe try Wildermyth. It's too popular for this thread, but since you're asking...It's not a super new game and graphically it's pretty simple so I can't imagine it takes much to run it. Mechanically it's a bit shallow (partially because there are only 3 playable classes, though they do have decent customization), but the combat system is still fun IMO. It's got a ton of content and a pretty charming procedural storytelling system. Though the procedural aspects do tend to get pretty repetitive before you're able to finish the 6 campaigns the game has.
>>738212073>is a new gameNo it's not, it's not even in Early Access yet, at the moment it's little more than a promise
It's cute, it's short and it's free.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2203210/BURGGEIST/BURGGEIST.You are a wizard looking to save the love of his life. Crazy ass literal tower defense game where you get to blow the shit out of monsters all over this weird SotC esque landscape and the occasional weird cutscene to try and explain what's going on.
Phantom Brigade has slightly over 2500 reviews but I'm going to shill it anyway because it deserves a second chance. It got shit on when it was released, and not without reason, but the devs (eventually) got their shit together and added a lot of features that the players were asking for. It's still not perfect and (IMO) the mech design is pretty lame on average, but it's a ton of fun to play and once you get the hang of the timeline mechanics it looks and feels satisfying as fuck.
>>738212886>picGod damn, this is what Rock and Sock did after their boxing careers ended?
>>738211287I'll always shill this game. One of the more active developers too thought they've slowed down a little since EA but updates for it are still regular so a doing a new campaign every couple of months feels kinda fresh
>>738211586>>738211845Hero Lodge as previously mentioned. Kind of like Final Fantasy Tactics meets Monster Hunter with granular AP system and top tier encounter design and progression.
>>738212985Kek. The mech design is really one of the game's weakest points. You can kind of make something that looks alright by combining the right parts and creating a nice color scheme, but it's an uphill battle. On the bright side it looks better in motion than it does in screenshots, since the animations are actually pretty decent.
>>738209832There is no such thing as a "real" gamer. Don't label yourself, there's no point. Play what you like. On the other hand, if you play a new game and don't enjoy it, well... you don't enjoy it. No harm done.
>>738213196Did that game ever get more content beyond "fight the same enemies for 10 000 times"?
>>738212709furslop
>>738213430Yeah they completely overhauled the campaign structure. Now every region is under control by a specific group of enemies which determines what mech types and weapon types they use. Like one group uses lots of cheap junk, another group specializes in high-tech energy weapons, etc. So over the course of a campaign you get way more variation now.
>>738213571Are missiles still overpowered and insanely difficult to avoid?
Fantasy of Eden. It's a Dragon Quest III knock-off but I don't know of any other game that lets you switch sides to join the Demon Lord, destroy all the kingdoms, then kill the Demon Lord and take over everything. Heck, when on the Demon Lord's side, you even gain access to an entirely different tavern where you recruit monster party members.https://store.steampowered.com/app/735010/Fantasy_of_Eden/
StarVaders suddenly got really cheap for me. Worth it?
>>738213803I don't think they're hard to avoid since you can see them coming and timing a boost to make them miss is usually easy, but against the AI yes they can be very OP, especially those that arc high and then split up into multiple warheads (forgot the name). You can fuck up an entire area from the edge of the map if you want. But honestly lots of things can be OP if you use them right. A heavy melee shield bash build can Coolaid Man through just about anything, railguns are stupid strong if you line them up right, shield + shotgun is super easy to play and can beat anything 1v1, etc.

Horizon's Gate.It has less than 1500 reviews. It looks like shit on the Steam page but it plays inredibly well. It's basically an open world sandbox turn based strategy rpg that is equal parts Final Fantasy Tactics/SaGa/Sid Meier's Pirates! with a great sense of progression and adventure and also a surprising amount of world interactivity for a 2d gaem. I've put almost 50hr into it already and still haven't completed my first playthrough as still got the adventurin' itch. There's also highly recommended workshop modpacks that double the size of the game which I'm planning to use for a second playthrough. I had my eye on it for years but the price and graphics put me off, but when you're actually playing it all feels super clean and smooth and a joy to play.
>>738223208>I've put almost 50hr into it>mfwi can vouch for what this anon says, it's a very good game. It's not the first game this deve has made, voidspire, alvora tactics and kingsbane are similar, but without the sid meier's pirates part

They also play completely different.

>>738138304The thing about these Chinese games is they rarely even get a functional translation and the AI translate is absolutely nonsensical garbage 99% of the time. Chinese devs also seem to have the most retarded development ideas and can never leave a perfectly decent finished product/idea alone and keep changing it until it becomes a turd that barely resembles the original vision>>738172048I would say Amazing Cultivation Simulator has the best cultivation system (systems really as it has a few methods) because it rewards player ingenuity and allows for some truly batshit stuff in future generations like a golden core with more qi than a god. Sadly there's no one cultivation game that does everything good, Tale of Immortal does the adventuring/story better but is basically a shmup that turns into an auto-battler. The two best Chinese sandboxy rpgs with cultivation elements are sadly more Wuxia than Xianxia - Scroll of Taiwu which is just a brilliant game overal when you get into it, and Legend of Heroes Three Kingdoms.
>>738223983Kek, there's no level scaling in the game so wouldn't worry about that. Only thing to really be aware of is it's one of those games where the stat scaling is kept pretty tight from start to finish so a +2 to whatever is always a good thing.

>>738225819It could definitely do with more frequent tactical encounters. I think the big issue is too often combat occurs an open field and the movement range is quite small in general. It's one of those combat systems that don't really shine until played on a higher difficulty with prior knowledge of potential threats and how the jobs work. Since the groves on the world map and the enemies within are all RNG each game it makes it fun to push things to the limit from the get go.
