When it comes to female characters who struggles a lot mentally, most of the time, they almost always all look super clean and without any exterior showing they are a mess. Realistically, someone who is struggling a lot mentally won't look like a super model. They won't dress very well or will look a little off, their skin and hairs will have imperfections. Their eyes might look a little strange and their teeth won't be perfect. I'm not saying they all will look very "ugly" but there's some external showing usually.
When male characters are presented with huge issues, it's more likely they can be shown with exterior showing of their mental health degrading. but it's almost never the case with female character. it's weird. It's like the mental aspect is done with both, but one still is trying to look "aesthetic".
