Now, back then, the Erebonia arc had a VERY different concept from what the Cold Steel arc became. The cast was supposed to be a bunch of soldiers, not high school brats. What ended up greenlighting 3rd was the decision to pursue the Crossbell arc, which required some time for planning and pre-production.Crossbell has an interesting development history. Apparently, a lot of that arc was written by a bunch of newbies behind the senior staff's back, and a lot of Falcom staff weren't particularly keen on its hard shift into scifi-fantasy. Trails was initially intended to have a steampunk-like setting and aesthetic, which explains why Liberl is way more backwards and rustic that Crossbell or the bigger cities in Erebonia and Calvard. Internally, staff were pretty split on adding stuff like flip phones, electronic banking, and other high tech shit to the series. Ultimately, what made Crossbell win out was Falcom giving those newer devs a chance to prove themselves and Zero selling way better than expected.
