Keyboard and mouse controls are outdated. The only advantage they once held was the ability to move, jump, and aim at the same time. With modern controllers like the SC, you can do that and much more, MUCH faster. You don't need three fingers just to walk around, as on keyboard. A haptic trackpad is not only far better than a joystick for precision in all circumstance, it's also better than a mouse or keyboard for ergonomics. Gyro makes up any perceived difference in fine aiming performance.Source: Using Steam Controller 2015 for 11 years; Steam Deck for 4 years.
>>738137009I'm not gonna play a shooter or minecraft with that thing lmao. But you have fun okay?
>>738137009still gonna play dota, cs and deadlock with m&kb.
reminder
Gyro + trackpad is not better than mouse aim sorry

>>738137009if anything it would be easier to make a mouse and keyboard setup perfect by simply replacing the left side of the spacebar with an analogue stickthat's really the only advantage controllers have
>>738137287razer sells those.
>>738137009dude i'll be buying it tomorrow but you're still trying to hard
>>738137180what's the problem here? if you're ok with windows and apple then you should be ok with adding non steam games to steam
>>738137180so wait it relies 100% entirely on steam input to be compatible with games that already have support for traditional controllers?seems kinda like an oversight
>>738137491it's an explicit design choice, a middle finger to microsoft's judaic closed source controller standards

>>738137556thats probably a good thing in the long term but right now it means a lot of unnecessary bullshit configuring for non steam games. i get that you can just add them to steam but it feels like it would have been smarter to make the controller to be able to emulate xinput/directinput out of the box like steam input already does for compatibility's sake
>it needs Steam running AND the controller app or it doesnt even work.bloatware you say?

PSA you don't really need the left touchpad to use as a mouse or flickstick once you get used to gyro ratcheting (similar to lifting and repositioning your mouse). Its nice to have a high sens or low sens option though. You can also bind an invert x layer so you can press the button, move the controller in the opposite direction, and have the camera keep going in the same direction. Its a little better than ratcheting in many cases. There is no pause to reposition the controller this way. I wish I had the option with a mouse, but its not reliable to set up. Only flaw potential flaw is only having one gyro instead of two. Most of the sensors start wigging out once you go above 5-6x RWS and have trouble making small adjustments when changing directions. Alpakka you can start and stop on a time just like a mouse. Most gyro controllers there is a slight delay. Sadly the Alpakka 2 failed kickstarter, but they might be licensing the tech to other companies.
>>738138464you can press like 2.5 buttons on your retarded "thumbpad" designmice have had that for decades and gamer mice have like 10 easily accessible buttonsthen there's also the scroll...
>>738138049>Scan post for "rotund", ready to call him out for his philistine behaviour when it's not included>It is includedCarry on.
>>738137491I just don't understand why they couldn't let users set it up like a keyboard and mouse for lizard mode. Sure, if you want customisation overlays in game, run the program through steam. But why not offer basic support outside of steam?
>>738138637Meant right touchpad. You know how if you use a mouse and you run out of space on the mouse pad you have to lift the mouse up and reposition it? Gyro ratcheting is the same thing. With the invert x layer (using a mouse as an example), you don't need to reposition, when you press the button and move the mouse backwards, the camera keeps moving in the same direction. So there is no pause if you need to say do more than a 180 degree turn. Tinkering with Steam Input like this is so much fun
>>738137491The controller is for the Steam Machine first and foremost, every design decision puts the Steam Machine first. Everything else is an afterthought.
>>738138659you were comparing them to laptop touchpads, you disingenuous goalposting moving faggotyou can have your hand on 4 other buttons on the steam controllerno one uses mmo nigger mice and their buttons are uncomfortably on the side all left to just your thumb

>>738139169>Actually I said trackpads are shit and thumbpads won't be better.and that demonstrates that you don't understand ergonomics>thumb on thumbpad == PERFECT AGILITY>thumb on 9 buttons == "uncomfortably on the side all left to just your thumbyes, the primary thing you do with your mouse is that you move it around, clicking buttons on the side is a tertiary functiontrackpads are a primary function, your other fingers don't fulfill more complex functions, they just press buttons
>millions of regular controllers available>new one comes out with more options for control>retards billow out to say how it shouldn't have more options for controlWhy does this happen in every thread
>>738139447Subwits quite simply do not have the brainpower to comprehend the idea that different people have different preferences and that products can have target audiences they aren't part of. They get incredibly confused and frightened when they see something that doesn't directly appeal to them because it shatters their entire worldview. They do not understand why a company would release a product they don't want because they think that means that no one will want it and that it's an obvious flop.
>>738139447Because /v/ is cobtrarian and would argue against breathing if you made a thread about it.
>>738137824There is no incentive for Valve to create translation software for the tiny edge case of users who are both using Windows and not using Steam. They know their target demo. Just like the first Steam Controller, they're just gonna leave it up to a 3rd party to do it themselves. Its ripping the bandaid off of Microslops grip with Xinput.
>>738139447Have to even the playing field or they won't sell any controllers.

>>738137009The ergonomics of a handheld controller will always be compromised compared to a stationary controller unless your primary goal is to be able to walk around with it and your controller takes that into account.I think it's cool that the SC2 at least has an answer for the sheer number of inputs at your disposal on a keyboard, but the mouse will still have a purpose even if the basic keyboard is kind of lacking with no way to incorporate motion.>>738137287Might as well just get a flightstick or throttle with an analog stick then. thumbsticks are a bit of a meme on flat keyboards.>>738137180>Windows after the sunsetting of XP and 7>Gaming on Poodroid ever>>738137824Xinput just doesn't have support for half of the controller at all, and DirectInput often requires a wrapper anyway since a lot of games don't support it. It would be stupid to go through the effort.
