X really is pointless when you overclock 2 as that was the only real advantage it had. It's 1 step forward, 2 steps back in terms of level design and all the new weapons it adds just feel like shit. Still a great game just because it's so heavily based on 2.

3 is bloated and unbalanced as all hell, filled with bullet sponges, and has a ton of shitty sections and dead air, but would be a really solid entry if the entire game was like stages 3 and 4.

4 is really underrated. It reuses a lot of assets from 3, although frankly most of those assets were just shoved in 3 without much care because it was supposed to be their last Slug game so they didn't want anything to go to waste. The level design and bosses are really solid though.

5 has the absolute worst level design and bosses in the series, and is largely an irredeemable turd, plus it has the slide that only exists in that one game and can't be disabled, completely fucking with your muscle memory and leading to constant accidental deaths.

I have 1, X and 3 on MVS and plan on getting the Fusion convertor to play them on my AES+ I'm getting in November. I'm getting the anniversary edition with the AES+ reprint version, but it is nice to have options. I would get 2 on MVS, but the slowdown just kills it for me. The AES+ may have an overclock feature that might fix the slowdown, but still.

1 has the classic appeal but hard to go back to with all the advancements of the later titles.

5 is great as far as the first level and first scene of the second level. First level actually has a shit ton of hidden routes, you can get either the normal slug, the slug walker, and there's a HIDDEN MINIBOSS, only time in the entire series. Then a cutscene setting up a story.

Unfortunately development was rushed and they left out half the fucking game after that point. You would've had a commando prisoner who follows you and shoots shit after freed, and the final boss sequence was significantly more elaborate: you first destroy a gigantic stone turtle, climb up its back to fight the metal elephants, climb up again and fight the cultist dude from the cutscenes, and presumably after that you fight the death god thing. The entire sequence got axed and reshuffled so you just jump a bunch of pillars, shoot the elephants, then fight the demon and that's it.
The demon, even though it has only 2 attacks, would've been a good final boss if you had the entire sequence before it intact...

Stage 1 is completely braindead filler, just hold right and fire the entire time including the boss, pure spectacle slop
Stage 2 is just a retread of Slug 2's stage 2, except more bland and with no verticality whatsoever, just a flat plane from beginning to end, and with zombies that crawl at a snail's pace with gargantuan health bars, and you just sit there in the corner and fire away while nearly falling asleep.
Stage 4 boss is fun but absolutely miserable if you don't route the shotgun to him, and some of his random patterns can cause guaranteed hits if you get unlucky.
Stage 5 is a giant bloated piece of shit (takes up 70% of the game's runtime btw), with two shitty shmup sections in a row (the second one is especially egregious, and just full of dead air). The earliest part of the mothership is not bad, but just continues the trend of throwing hordes of bullet sponge enemies at you with zero interesting level design, just mobs of enemies. The section with the clones is terrible, you just sit in a fucking corner and fire at hundreds of copy-pasted trashmobs. The final section with the gates is arguably the worst section in Slug history, with hordes of the biggest bullet sponges in existence, and you have to repeat the same exact sequence of slowly shooting at the door while dealing with hordes of slow moving bullet sponges four times in a row, and basically the only viable strategy is to cheese it. Then you have the single worst final boss in any Slug game by a fucking mile, you just jump back and forth between the tank and this one tiny pixel safespot every time he does his attack beam attack (which has a very questionable and unclear hitbox), while slooooowly whittling away at his absurdly massive healthbar for five minutes straight. If you didn't enter with flameshot or shotgun and a shitton of grenades, you better hope to get lucky with weapon drops or you will be there all day.

1st game is the best there's no contest. 2nd/X comes very close. 2 is better in a way because it keeps aliens to final level, though I like new variations for squids and mummies in X
3 is gimmicky shit, the paths you take are not very thought out. 2nd, 4th and final levels suck.

7/XX is too long lol. The variety of enemies is gone now, future soldiers don't do enough to compensate for it. May I offer you gentlemen an indie game for consideration? Its a bit overpriced for the quality, but its fun and sovlful. Some guy decided he liked Metal Slug and Kirby, so he made a sluglike game with Great Cave Offensive style enemy chatter during the levels. Got a cute little story and lots of run and gun gameplay with some clever twists and a lot of Metal Slug omages, for instance the boss of area 2 is gameplay wise almost literally the Shooting Ray from MS5 despite the completely different context.

I recommend playing on the second hardest difficulty as the hardest one removes all your customization options. It makes things more challenging for sure but it also takes the feeling of progression away.

CT Special Forces series. I also find Contra Force to play closer to MS. The two gba Lilo & Stitch games if you dont mind some BS sections where you play as Lilo. Alien Hominid of course. Also one i played on ps4 called Speedollama which i think uses randomly generated stages.

In The Hunt and GunForce II are probably the closest, as they're from the same Nazca team.

Not really much else out there like Slug, it's by far the best run and gun, although I do like Contra, Shinobi, Cave Story, Shock Troopers, Cuphead, Jackal, Mercs, Elevator Action Returns, Out Zone, Sunset Riders, GnG, Kero Blaster, etc. but I wouldn't really say any of them play like Metal Slug.

I guess the most blatant clones would be Demon Front and Dolphin Blue, but those are both pretty bad..
