I've put counteless hours into the various Diablo games, but I couldn't tell you anything about the lore aside from the most surface level stuff to save my life.

One angel and one demons decided to run away from the war and bang, finding a Worldstone artifact to create the setting Sanctuary. Their children are what humans are descended from, and being part demon part angel they are very powerful; which is why you the player character can beat the shit out of Diablo/Mephisto/Baal etc. The demons found out that these half-angel half-demon dickheads are strong and so wanted to use their power to win the war, and because the demon and the angel who ran away from the war turned out to be absolutely retarded shitheads the demons ended up invading Sanctuary, and now you've got to beat them off with both hands.So basically just demons vs. angels and nothing else really matters. And also the angels barely show up and aren't good guys.

He mostly did this for his selfish reason but it was partly while humanity was spared as they technically no longer a threat to High Heaven.
