Elden Ring is the most content dense open world game. No padding due to cutscenes, or overlong dialogue or traversing empty areas. There is simply something meaningful to do everywhere.

classic arcade is too large. it should be a 3x3 like >>738159809 to represent that thats how big the games actually are.
>>
>>738160062
its not about size or length retard
>>
>>738160157
see thats the funny part, the op image implies that due to a lack of filler content, classic arcade games are intrinsically larger in size.
when in reality they're pretty small

>>738160206
That's a strawman. The OP is clearly about density.

Unironically a well made 40 minute arcade game has more legitimate content than a modern soulsshit or walking sim or bloated to 50+ hours of gameplay by walking around empty space, dead air, rolling past retarded AI, and backtracking

Except it is not. The 3x3 in >>738159809 is more dense than the other 2 options. By making it both more dense and larger it is saying it is not just more dense, but larger in total volume, which is absolutely 100% untrue with classic arcade games, which anyone who ever actually played a classic arcade game knows.

You would understand that if you weren't so dense yourself.

You could cut 60% of the game and it would improve, the dungeons add nothing and the RPG stat mechanics have added nothing ever since they started hyperfocusing on builds, balance and respeccing.
"something to do everywhere" does not translate to "something meaningful to do everywhere".
Normalizing 60$ pricepoints for everything was a mistake, it just leads to the worship of pointless padding and bloat.

"The Treasure game history is a rich tapestry. But, since we're all gonna die, there's one more secret I feel I have to share with you: I did not care for Radiant Silvergun."
"What?"
"Did not care for Radiant Silvergun."
"How can you even say that, Anon?"
"Didn't like it."
"Anon, it's like the perfect game!"
"This is what everyone always said. Whenever they say..."
"Hiroshi Iuchi, Hitoshi Sakimoto, I mean, you never see, Studio Gonzo!"
"Fine. Fine. Fine team, did not like the game."
"Why not?"
"Did not... Couldn't get into it."
"What didn't you like about it?"
"It insists upon itself."
"What?"
"It insists upon itself."
"What does that even mean?"
"Because it has a valid point to make, it's insisted!"
"It takes forever memorizing the scoring route; you spend like six and a half hours on Stage 3... You know, I can't get through, I've never even finished the game. I've never seen the ending."
"You've never seen the ending?!"
"How can you say you don't like it if you haven't even given it a chance?"
"I agree. It's not really fair."
"It's outrageous."
"I have tried on three separate occasions to get through it, and I get to Stage 5."
"Yeah, it's a great stage. I love that stage."
"I have no idea what they're talking about. It's like they're speaking a different lang... You know, that's where I lose interest in it."
"You know what, Anon..."
"They're speaking Japanese!"
"The language they're speaking is a language of subtlety; something you don't understand."
"I love Cotton Boomerang. That is my answer to that statement."
"Whatever."
"I like that game too."

There is more gameplay in a 20 minute long arcade game than a 10 hour long action game. Like you play ninja gaiden and so much of the game is just really retarded platforming and sliding block puzzles, and a lot of the combat may as well be meaningless downtime. And since the bosses are also bad, how much of those games is like.... actually mentally stimulating. Like what percentage of ninja gaiden is good engaging gameplay? Like 5%? Might as well have made it 20 minutes long and cut the crap out.

But if you have ever played a classic arcade game before. Most of them are really shallow and you have to put in like 25 cents every time you died, and most arcade games where made to force you to use continues as frequently as possible.

Not even that
Take FC3 for examples
you have different linear missions
explorations sections
and different outposts with different viable approaches

While arcade game is one linear section with one right way to play
>>
>>738174690
That's not classic arcade, that's late 80s/90s arcade.
Classic arcade didn't HAVE continues. Defender, Pac Man, Robotron, Donkey Kong, Frogger, etc. You got your 3 lives, maybe 1 or 2 extra lives from score, and that was it. You kept going till you ran out, or advanced so far you glitched the game, and tried to score as high as possible.

Continuefests like Gauntlet, Double Dragon, TMNT, T2 light gun game, etc came later, along with a shift in focus from score to progression

>>738175330
Why would anyone want this? Something people don't consider is how stupid it is to waste time on content no one will ever see, or optional content that is taking time away from making what should be the greater whole of the experience better. An arcade game should be 20 minutes of the most hyper focused design in any video game. Any deviation from that is just detracting from that. There is no room for something in an arcade game to be boring or bad. Even 10 seconds of something being less than perfect is excruciatingly boring when you're trying to 1cc something, which is why I always suggest 1ccs because it forces you to think about how the game is designed A LOT.

It's important because arcade games cost money. It's not some masocore crap like IWBTG, they were originally designed where people have to pay up to take a swing at them, so an arcade game that's really hard also has to be really fun.
>>
>>738176040
is that why the shmup cabs were always empty and everyone played fighting or racing instead
>>

>>
>>738176081
Shmups were THE genre of the 80s and early 90s. With the popularity of consoles and casual normalfag gaming came RPGs. Then we see a shift towards the hardcore otaku audience, where shmups are designed to be played by a small group of people for many years. Ultimately the profit a cab yields stays the same, and it encourages repeat customers.

Density of Card Games:
>Gas
>Poker - only ever waiting on deals, bets, and other nonsense and only play a hand infrequently
>Liquid
>War - steady, up-tempo card playing, very little downtime where you're not playing cards
>Solid
>52 Card Pickup - non-stop action, always making moves to end the game, never waiting on another player, can quickly start another session after finishing, player skill is objectively measured through game completion time, additional challenge modes of ordering cards by suit and value

You're dead wrong. The dungeons are necessary diversions you can delve into when you start to get sick of the monotony of the open world and is craving a more structured experience. Without the dungeons functioning as palette cleansers you would get fatigued very quick,

Builds and balance are good for role playing. I have no idea what your complaint is here. Respecing is a bit controversial, but they actually compliment role playing since the game is absolutely massive so punishing too harshly for wrong stat allocations seems inappropriate plus it addresses one of the complaints people by encouraging you to change your build so that you can use weapons and spells you didn't have the stats for.

It is implied that what you do in Elden Ring is meaningful most of the time. That's what's so special about Elden Ring despite its gargantuan size, it feels handcrafted. There are shitty radiant quests or procedurally generated crap that is spit out by a computer.
