Honest thoughts on Doom 3?

Solid b movie suspense shooter, ok Doom game.
>>
>>738161793
Kinda boring tbqh. The novelty wears off around the hour
>>

These were my feelings as well
>>

I had fun with it when it came out. There was some mod for it that was pretty hilarious. Can't remember what it as called though.
>>
it's a solid game, just not a solid Doom game

1. worst shotgun in any game ever

Can't be worse than Halo's
>>
great game. doom 2 was great but i didnt need more of the same at the time and was glad 3 changed things up. some genuinely unsettling horror moments. great atmosphere, sound and graphics. combat was suitable for the type of game it was
>>
Masterpiece, best game game in the franchise.
Only stupid niggers hate it. God i would take take a reboot nigger and smash their head with.a sledgehammer like all those niggers niggers deserve
Fuck niggers

I actually quite enjoy Doom 3. I’ve been playing it for the past, almost, 22 years. Revisit it once per year around Halloween.
The BFG Edition enhancements were definitely needed, but I prefer the way the flashlight worked in the OG. I wish there was a toggle to revert to the actual flashlight instead of the ducktape armor mod light.
That OG flashlight added to the suspense.

I riked it

Filters the sois and troons and has the best shotgun perhaps ever in all of gaming. Goes without saying it's the best doom game
>>
It’s better than Doom Eternal and 2016 but isn’t the best DOOM game, that title goes to Dark Ages.

It's fine, even great. But I don't think it really works as a horror game. Also that fucking shotgun is a genuine disgrace.

A glorified tech demo

Probably would've been remembered more fondly and had bigger impact if it didn't come out in the same year as Half-Life 2 and get utterly mogged in both tech and gameplay department
>>
>>738161793
ass
>>
>>738161793
slow and boring, the weapons feel like plastic toys, zero umph, character walks slowly, the game only picks up a bit when you reach the hell levels which are very late, and they still make you play more industrial hallways in the between them and the final boss, huge downgrade from all 3 quakes and dooms(including doom64 here)
>>
>>738161793
Shameful shotgun, great plasma rifle. The chaingun is great too and if you hoard your rockets then you can sort of main the rocket launcher like in Quake but by the time you really get to that point you go to Hell and the game takes all of your stuff from you. It was graphically impressive but chased trends and was worse for it.
>>
>>738163814
>firing a shotgun at mid range
Shotguns can kill a person pretty easily at fifty meters, at five meters the pellets basically haven't even spread out yet.

I pissed and shit myself the first time playing it. Had to put it away for a couple of years to finish it.
I was very smol when it came out. Good game.
>>
>>738161793
An alright 7.5 out of 10 game. Its got great atmosphere and some great monster/demon designs. Its also got decent combat but not outstanding combat. That is the games biggest fault. The combat should have been better with more impactful damage dealt by the guns. You can't even gib the enemies in the game.
>>
>>738161793
Amazing survival horror if you only save the game at heal stations
>>
3/4 of the game is a single imp spawning behind you
game has no balls
>>
The most disappointing thing about the game is that when it DOES actually throwing monsters at you it's so apparent how great the overall combat design is and how fun the environment is to fight in.
But it takes forever to get there.
It's a nice single playthrough for the atmosphere and vibe but I would never play it again.

Decently fun and suspensful game at the time, but hasn't really aged well. Unlike OG doom which is still endlessly moddable and replayable.
I gues some of the doom3 shadow effects still look okay.

Retard noguns. You can hit and kill someone from 100 yds with a shotgun.
>>

Ironically had more fun playing it on OG Xbox than on PC. For a game meant to melt PC hardware in 2004, it felt better to play on a console.

>>
>>738161793
It was better than Half-Life 2 and only got forgotten because unlike Half-Life 2, a modding scene didn't develop around it because ID at that point didn't foster nor promote modding like it use to with Doom/Quake 1.
>>
>>738162271
A bunch of its base weapons look weird and are very unsatisfying to shoot if just from their sounds
The pistol goes SQUELCH SQUELCH SQUELCH
The shotgun goes PLOOMF
And the assault rifle sound like a type-writer
>>
>>738168753
It's not a survival horror game, it's a horror FPS. There is ample amounts of ammo for shit like the SMG which can easily hose down anything and you're not actively avoiding enemies to conserve shit.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay beat it to market earlier that summer and pulled off mostly the same visual effects on a fucking Xbox. Plus you had Farcry that spring as well, which had these big open lush levels.

Doom 3 really had the worst timing of coming out in one the most saturated years in vidya, both in terms of tech advancement and game recognition.
>>
>>738161793
I love how for all its fancy rendering tech, the game didn't ship with wide screen support, and Carmack actually thought wide screen monitors would never be a thing.
>>
>>738170795
>and Carmack actually thought wide screen monitors would never be a thing.
He never thought that. The nigger had a 16:9 CRT screen by 1995 worth $10k. Carmack always believed in future technology kicking off.

I like the game a lot but I'm pretty biased for 'sole survivor' type shit in games. I like how Mars City gets progressively worse as the game goes along and towards the end it's just meat town. A very alien kind of hell.

Nice action horror game.
It has nothing to do with doom tho. Not crazy fast pace action, no over the top encounters. Its a slow paced, slow digestible experience, very different from wolfenstein, doom and quake.
Still a nice game if you don't care about not being doom.

>>738161793

>>
Is it weird that the thing I liked the absolute most about Doom 3 is that you get a virtual mouse cursor following your 'finger' in-game on the little touchpad screens?

Very, very rare in games to let you mess around with UI on buttons like that
>>
>>738177694
It carried over to other games using the engine, like Quake 4 and Prey.
>>
>>738162271
The new cartoon mouse shooter has an objectively worse shotgun. It can't kill most target with 1 barrel, and even with both barrels it STILL can't kill most targets. It lets the fire DoT finish them off instead as a part of it's "unique gimmick".

>>738161793
>be PC only gamer
>love classic Doom
>old enough to have played it when it came out
>have fallen on hard times around the time Doom3 came out
>PC was toaster at that point and couldn't play it
>20 years later
>now mainly playing on Switch
>basically only playing Splatoon with gyro
>get Doom bundle for Switch
>Doom3 has no gyro
>no longer know how to play shooters without gyro
>stop trying to play Doom3 after 30 minutes
I should probably get it in Steam and play normally with KB+M, but I just can't be bothered at this point. And honestly I never thought it was that good, to me Doom is the 2.5D Doom and everything else is just random shooters with the Doom name slapped on them.
>>
>>738161793
Love it, although it's more of a Half-Life game mixed with System Shock and Doom. Sound design and atmosphere is the shit.
>>
>>738161793
It's simply a mediocre shooter. A good tech demo for idTech 3 (maybe), but if you were to remove the "Doom" branding from this game it would be utterly forgotten and literally no one would talk about it after 2010.

I'm serious. Imagine for a moment that this game was called Demons of Mars or something. Absolutely no connection to the lineage and name recognition of Doom. Do you still acknowledge the game to any degree whatsoever?

I liked it.

I think people have a very warped sense of what original Doom was supposed to be. This is the same dev who made Wolfenstein. For the most part you were expected to take it slow, peek and shoot, etc. It was supposed to be a horror shooter. This idea that Doom 3 played nothing like original Doom is not really true because it definitely played how the original Doom was actually intended to be played by the devs.

And it's a fuckload better than Doom 2016. I finally got around to playing that game recently and after the way everyone worshiped that game for so many years I was shocked with how dull it was. Doom 3 is way, way closer to what OG Doom is than Doom 2016 was.
>>
>>738180861
>For the most part you were expected to take it slow, peek and shoot, etc. It was supposed to be a horror shooter.
That is categorically wrong
You are wrong
>>
>>738181597
I'm categorically right.

There's all sorts of hints like how slow changing weapons is but the real dead give away is that the game is so poorly designed in this regard that it becomes stupid easy if you play it as a fast-paced shooter. Kind of like how the old Hitman games are stupid easy if you just play them as a third person shooter. id realized this flaw and this is why they added the nightmare difficulty mode which was not in the game originally. That is the intended difficulty for people who intend to play Doom as a fast paced shooter. But of course none of them do because then the game actually starts to become reasonably challenging.
