But it's generalyl well done with strong story beats and powerful, memorable set pieces. I think its legacy suffers from one too many people having never finished Midgar and tying way too much of the games identity into a single location, but that's really it. Some games have done combat better, but I can't think of a JRPG that packages gameplay. music, atmosphere, and story together at such high levels. When one slacks, another picks up. There's not a moment where they all fail at once.

The battle environments are extremely simple to make and the battle system itself would be 80% the same. The backgrounds being done by AI alone is like, 50% of the development time, done. Pre-VII, the games followed the odd games being about a clean party of four with an evolving job system while the even games were about a large cast of characters who floated in and out of the party for the sake of the story. You can see the growth of both approaches over time, more obviously in the odd FFs with the job system but also in the even FFs with FF2 having 1 variable party slot, FF4 having 4, and then FF6 also having 4 but in return not having a main character so you can build freely once you reach WoR.FFVII threw away that beautiful back and forth and the games have simply never recovered from it.

A game like Threads of Fate DESPERATELY needed voice acting. It's not always a bad thing, especially not if its done well.
