Do we have enough graphics? I think we have enough
>>738185964You don't understand, even now that GPU companies dumped them for AI, these AAA companies still must make glorified tech demos where they simulate as many light rays as possible. Baked lighting and style are immoral.
>>738185964For consoles the PS1 and N64 were good enough. If you wanted to get fancy you could give the PS1 actual 3D rendering, but that's all that is needed. For PC there was never a need to go beyond 90s and early 2000s graphical standards, just let mods handle all this ultra high graphics nonsense. The pursuit of "GRAPHUKS" can be laid entirely at the feet of consolewars nonsense when they got their grubby thumbs on PC's mouselook and made every performance efficient graphical effect look like shit.
>>738185964we've had enough for 15 years
>>738185964But making good games requires holding on to good developers, how is this possible if we need to end their contracts to save money and appease thr shareholders the second a project is done? Please note that the long term success of the business is not my problem, only short term profits to make my bonuses go up.
>>738185964Too bad we get neither good games nor good graphics now lol
>>738185964Graphics peaked 10-15 years ago.Gameplay peaked 20+ years ago. They have been DECLINING since then.No exceptions.
Having good graphics is actually a bad thing if you as a game dev dont know how to optimize it
>>738185964Crysis was almost 20 years ago and in that time games have kept getting more demanding for negligible gain.
>>738185964We haven't gone far enough
>>738186724I felt that way after playing Mankind Divided. That game looked great when maxxed out on PC.
We have more than enough juice for pretty good looking games and stylized to hell games, but photo realistic would be neat you know? Not for every game but for those that want itI think the real problem is how that'd intersect with imagination. Photorealistic CoD or porn is easy to imagine but applied to a dragon? What about a weird flesh abomination? How about physics engines with fantastical machines like magitech airships or gundams? There's a point where I think it'd actually be counter intuitive to game design
I would've been fine with them remaining at 6th gen.I would've been happy with graphics staying at a 7th gen level and games just getting more mechanically complex. It's the sweet spot between games being too expensive and developers being able to make unique games.8th gen is overkill.9th gen is minimal improvements over 8th gen at best and a regression at worst. Higher polycounts and texture resolution but image quality has taken a massive nosedive as upscalers have become the norm.Really there is probably some sweet spot between 6th and 7th gen that was perfect. Like Half Life 2 was too advanced for the ps2 and barely ran on the Xbox but it wasn't quite 360 looking either.
>>738186920And that game was a stock PS4 title, that looked barely better than the PS3 predecessor.Death Stranding also shipped on PS4, and looks better than the modern UE5 slop.>>738187149>photo realistic would be neat you knowAgain, we've had photorealism with STYLE for decades now. Kojima's games from the 2010s onwards are trail blazers in this.
>>738187252>it wasn't quite 360 looking eitherCorrect. It actually had COLORS, TECH AND STYLE. Every AAA game being dowgraded to run on 360 was the bane of the 7th gen.
>>738187465There was never a reason to add detailed faces to games.A flat textured plane with maybe a protrusion for the nose is all that is needed, possibly with some head bobbing to indicate speech.
>>738187371Human Revolution looks much worse than Mankind Divided. Human Revolution has almost cartoony looking low resolution textures and it's carried mostly by the overall art direction.Mankind Divided still looks great today and the only real weakness is the skin shading looking like concrete.
>>738187465I think people really overestimate the visual fidelity of Half Life 2.Most of the screenshots people post are from Episode 1 + 2 (which were significant upgrades) or running post patch.
>>738185964Gameplay doesn't sell, believable bullshots do. Crapitalism strikes again
>>738185964we had games with good stories when graphics were shit though
>>738187606this but also they're voiced by the developers with garbled simspeak so the dev budget isn't getting blown on voice actors
>>738185964nah here's the real redpill:You can't keep making better things because everything is relative so in order to have better you also need to have worse, your retarded dream of everything being good and perfect cannot be real.
>>738185964??? Everyone knows that, or at least anyone born before 2000.
>>738188675>voice actorsHeh. If you want to budget in voice acting, then you just get one (1) voice actor. If they can't voice everything, then they obviously just have no range in which case they weren't going to be able to voice your character properly anyway. Get them to do the sound effects and acapella soundtrack too while they're at it.The alternative is split between whomever is free at the moment and DECTALK Paul.
If i wanted realism Id go outside.Focus graphical efforts on stylized art that wont look dated in under 5 years.Games like Katamari still look standout 25 years later, try to compete on those terms for fucks sake.
>>738187465Left is more impressive because the lip sync is generated in real time by the engine so you can redub the game without problem. Right is hand animated and time consuming. Even then HL2 switch to very low quality lip movement animations in actual gameplay.
I actually want less, once i saw hyper realistic Nathan Drake in UC4 i realized i don't really want better graphics
>>738190305Uncharted 4 is still a very stylized game. It has a painterly look to it that's very aesthetically pleasing.
>>738190305It's funny how moviegames go out of their way to undo all the things that movie makers doInstead of using makeup to hide imperfection they go out of their way to add moreInstead of using lens filter to avoid defects they go out of their way to add lens flare, chromatic aberration and other shitInstead of placing extra lights to get the best result they just use the sun and normal house lights and hope raycasting work.I hate it so much
>>738190690All you said has nothing to do with Uncharted.
>>738185964Graphics reached their peak yes, now we're focusing on tools to make developer's lives easier while passing the burden into the consumer demanding more powerful hardware while games look the same. This somehow hasn't reduced development time at all and it actually keeps increasing in budget.
New games are blurrier than ever and you have the balls to say we reached peak graphics? Get this lunatic out of here.
