Why are modern devs so bad at capturing the spirit of life sim games? Is it because the industry is full of otaku?
>>
>>738200236
Because it's a dream now. Owning land and being profitable as a sustenance farmer is not compatible with the world scene anymore.
>>
>>738200236
Harvest Moon grew too big at its own expense. Life sim was initially a smaller part of the game.

That's really what I don't like. I want to focus on the farming, the minor social aspect, and maybe a simple fishing minigame. I don't really need the in-depth mining/dungeon crawling, crafting, or RPG mechanics in a farming sim.
>>
>>738200641
it's weird because most people seem to want the exact opposite. stardew valley didn't help, but rune factory was already doing it way earlier.
>>
Corporate CEOs think farms are an abstract concept and not a real thing so the direction they want to take farming games in very rarely equates to comfy and fulfilling.

Back to Nature is kino because it hits a great balance between all the elements and it all feels very natural. I don't like how much Stardew Valley focuses on building up and crafting as if it's a survival game, and the characters are obnoxious tumblrites.

RF is interesting in that each from the initially kept improving things so much it invalidated the earlier game(s). You basically only need to play RF3. No idea what happened to the series since.

They don't know how to modernize the concept, so now they add a lot of fantasy and battle systems to "spice it up".
In guardians of Azuma the farming part of the game is almost inexistent, and you can even accelerate the growing of the crops in one day, the "fun" part of the game is fighting monsters and building the towns.

You do know that produce is sold at a MASSIVE markup right? Farmers get paid like 10-15% of the final price of the products on the super market.

Land is expensive. Returns suck. A bad harvest can put you in the red for years. Companies buy up land to collect farmers' gibs.

I don't think modern game developers think like the guy on the left anymore. I can't imagine a lot of modern game developers being inspired to create something based on a real world experience, so you get something impersonal and uninspired.

Also, I have a more personal grudge against developers not chosing target audiences for their games.

I also wonder how Marvelous (the devs of RF and real Harvest Moon) is so fucking retarded when it comes to aesthetic visual direction. Stardew Valley is literally a wholesale ripoff of Harvest Moon and completely outsold everything Marvelous has ever done. And what does Marvelous do? Release even uglier looking game. I wish I knew nip just so I could read up and maybe understand where their incompetence stems from. Is it the owner? Did talent leave? Just clueless Japanese buisness boomers? Basically they just need to revist the first Harvest Moon and it would sell.

I'd enjoy the Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons games if they'd only had more events. I'm sorry but you're sitting at like six or seven character events for bachelorettes, your most important characters, that's not acceptable. You don't have to go full JRPG and have huge storylines for everyone but there should be enough where they're not so frustratingly sparse and lifeless.
>>
>>738217287
Nah... Women genuinely like these games. It's the one genre I don't really grudge them. The problem is more that they'll bloat the games with stupid side mechanics and automation instead of putting more effort into making the sewing, watering and harvesting parts of the sim engaging.
>>
>>738200938
The game isn't finished yet is it? I don't want to invest fifty hours into a game just for the actual story stuff and romance stuff to be dumped right as I'm burning out.

I love Harvest Moon, when I saw this game on my Steam front page I bought it but then I insta refunded it when I saw the forced pronouns. It looks like generic 90's anime style forced into a farming sim. This game was probably made by a troon.

Many people hate the success of Stardew Valley, but really I've yet to find another farm sim that's the complete package like SV is. The others either look like shit, have worse mechanics or the setting is too fantastical.

Personally I'd prefer a farming sim with very deep farming mechanics - crop rotation, soil nutrients, pests to take care of etc - but without the focus on machine operation like in Farming Simulator. I guess what I'm looking for is a too specific niche. Closest I've seen is UnReal World (more of a survival sim with some farming) and Vintage Story (I REALLY wish it didn't look like a Minecraft mod)

Any chance of one of these farming games that aren't set in a generic human (probably vaguely euro/NA) setting?
How about being a dwarf responsible for feeding a new mountainhome colony (or an old one)?
How about instead of being a farmer revitalizing the town you're a shaman/witch that 'farms' by exploiting nature spirits from an understanding of the ecosystem gifted to you from dancing naked in the rain at midnight.

What makes a good "Life sim" game?
At what point does adding more, take away from the game?
What keeps a person engaged with a life sim game with a comfortable game loop that isn't too much of a grind and isn't so dull you feel no need to engage with it?

I think a common pitfall is excessive crafting (Starting to look like Terraria) and dipping toes into dungeon crawling, in which, it's often better to be a dungeon crawler first with a life sim side game, than the other way around.

And for the sake of it being important,
Multiplayer, yes or no? Sharing creations, and custom items and stuff?
I think multiplayer gives a bigger initial boost but ultimately is doomed to the 2 week minecraft cycle

It's because developers are too concerned with the contingent of players who compulsively need to solve every game, to find the meta, and to grind efficiently. >Now that i think about it, winter suck
Old Harvest Moon games weren't afraid to give players downtime like that. Winter was incredibly important because it was the one time of the entire year you actually had spare time to look around and explore.
It's very easy for us to look back and go
>"Actually there was a lot of time to do most things if you did things optimally"
But we were kids. We had little to no idea of what we were doing in those games. It's why I look back on winter so fondly, my little kid brain was just going around going "Wooooah there's snow everywhere" or some other dumb thing.
This is incredibly important and I think the devs knew it. It's why it's my favorite season.
