In what way did combat evolve though?
It became auto-aim console slop, that limited carried weapons in FPS games to just two.
>>738202204doom and goldeneye have auto aim
>>738202141Dedicated melee and grenade inputs
>>738202141CE revolutionized controller schemes for FPS on consoles and helped push Half-Life's idea of not making half-assed narratives for the genre
Actual answer. It combined weapons, melee, and grenades into a unifying toolkit that seamlessly complement each other. Shooters never did that. You had a last resort backup weapon that was almost always useless, and then you had to switch to dedicated grenades.
>>738202141guns became inaccurate to the point where walking up to the enemy and punching them is more effective
Reminder, this board will tell you halo baaad because muh auto aim( it doesn't have auto aim it has aim magnetism: goldeneye and virtually every console fps before halo is what auto aim is) and weapon limits; even through FEAR is unironically this boards favorite fps and has weapon limits too and you dont hear a peep about it.
regenerating health for console babies
>>738202404
it ditched the casual approach of being able to have all weapons at all times that pc babys had become accustomed to, so players had to actually think tactically about equipping themselves and approaching different encounters.
>>738202890Counter Strike did that
>>738202141There hasn't been a single FPS since that plays as well as CE does
>>738202141dumbed it down enough for the unwashed masses to enjoy
>>738202682You can just see how well this plays and feels even today, and then you look at Half Life (this boards favorite fps btw lol) and it's a total unc fest.
>>738202141magnum was automatic
>>738202141Made obese uncs seethe with impotent rage
>>738202938Halo 2
>>738203206Looks and plays like dogshit compared to CE
>>738202141It was a subtitle microshart's marketing team made them add because they thought nobody would buy an fps game just called halo
>>738203425they should've named it "Hallo :D"
>>738202141I'd never played a shooter where you could get in and out of vehicles seamlessly. Besides that there are so many small things that just became industry standard. Going from games like Doom, Golden Eye, Battle Tanx and so on to Halo CE did genuinely feel like an evolutionary leap, and it took several years for other game to even catch up to it.
>>738202346there was also the regenerating shield systemidk if it was the first but it definitely popularized itnot that every game would benefit from it, but it does allow a different style of level design and AI behavior since the player is not 100% reliant on the devs scattering health packs around
>ywn hear warthog run for the first time again
>>738204350>I'd never played a shooter where you could get in and out of vehicles seamlessly.Battlefield you fucking troglodyte
>>738204801Came out a year after Halo and was nowhere near as good.
>>738203206quarantine zone and gravemind ruined halo 2
>>738202141Most people aren't perceptive enough to notice but Halo had a high FoV of 100, much higher than any other FPS at the time and closer to human vision. It made the game feel really good, even if people didn't consciously register why exactly and now today 100 degree FoV is the gold standard and games that don't have it just feel retarded and disorienting to play like Cyberpunk 2077. Which has an abysmally low FoV trying to squeeze more framerate out of consoles. Also interestingly why Halo 2 also had a 70 FoV, they had a hard time getting it to run at a stable FPS and had to lower it.
I was having fun in Halo 4 wondering why everyone hated it then I met the Didact and I understood
ai that doesnt just run straight for youwell designed enemiesunique weapon designunique and well made vehiclesall time soundtracki.e. it finally said to all those shitty pc boomer shooters "let me show you how its done"
>>738206397that does not sound true
>>738206456>Having fun>In Halo 4I guess you could but the fact they nerfed the fuel rod cannon is an unforgivable crime.
Only having two weapons was never a bad thing, the game was designed around it.Instead of having 20 weapons that all effectively do the same thing you had 9 with clearly defined roles, 11 including grenades.
Like this
>>738206820One thing I appreciate about Halo is that the AI teammates are actually really good if they have the right weapons. Put a sniper on the side of your warthog and he can clear the level for you as long as you don't let him die.
>>738202141after playing perfect dark in a cave for a summer, turning on the flashlight in halo was fucking nuts.
>>738207263Oh no it absolutely makes the game better, because the game is designed around the limitations they set for you. So there's an element of strategy to choosing what you carry. Quakefags will never understand this.
>>738202141The combat/gameplay still hasn't been surpassed even to this day. Not even it's own sequels could replicate it or even come close to surpassing it.
>>738202141Dedicated melee button in an fps
>>738207289duh duh duh DUNNN
>>738202141Halo still has the best implementation of physics and vehicles in a first person shooter. Vehicles feel like total shit in Far Cry and Battlefield compared to Halo.Halo also popularized behavior trees.
>>738209058>getting killed because you got bumped by a warthog going 1mph is good
>>738202404>You had a last resort backup weapon that was almost always useless,Yeah, and they made it the weapon you start each level with.>>738202938XIII>>738203206All the problems of the original but worse weapons
>>738203040Half Life 1 is a much, much, much more tightly designed game than any Halo (and indeed HL2 but let's not even go there).
>>738210339As a fan of Half Life 2, Half Life 1 is total dogshit. It's like one step above Doom in terms of mechanics and game feel. And the stuff it did revolutionize like story focus and scripted sequences ended up being the worst shit to happen to gaming ever.Half Life 2 > Halo 3 > Halo 2 > Halo > Half Life 1
>>738202141Halo basically revolutionized the genre and invented the modern shooter. Regenerating health + 2 weapon limit + having melee and grenades on dedicated buttons: makes for very dynamic and straightforward gameplay. No more keycard hunting, no more scrambling for medikits, no more looking for alarms to deactivate behind every door, no more carrying an entire armory with you, you are dropped into the action and have to make do with what you got.
>>738210565As a fan of Halo, you are actually on fucking crack if you think Halo is better than Half Life.
>>738211515It 100% is.Half Life is shooting bullet sponge enemies in tiny hallways for 8 hours. Half Life 1 might legitimately be the most overrated game of all time.
>>738210339wrong
>>738202662CE didn't have regen health, dumbass>>738202938Even within the franchise, Halo 2, 5, and Infinite all have superior gunplay and movement
>>738211515As far as the shooting part in my shooter game, halo beats half life by a country mile.We can argue about the other stuff but not that.
>>738203520oh fugg :DD da flud :DDD
>>738202141actually it was never Bungie's intent to imply that the game had revolutionary combat. "Combat Evolved" was a forced addition by Microsoft after Bungie had refused to change the name from Halo to something like STAR KILLER SPACE FIGHTER EXTREME TACTICAL GORE EDITION
I still find it mind boggling that 343 decided to make the Forerunners a new alien race when the entire series plainly stated humans were the Forerunners. The foreshadowing from the very beginning was about as subtle as a nuclear blast and the capstone of 3 is Guilty Spark literally telling the player humans are Forerunner. Truth needed Johnson to hit the "kill everything in the universe" button himself, how much more blatant can you be? The Marathon symbol is plastered EVERYWHERE on human and Forerunner construction, come the hell on.The Forerunner mystery was solved but it's not like they were a narrative dead end from that point onward.
>>738211569>>738210565why do you consider half life 2 better than 1?to me at least, the only good contribution half life 2 made its the source engine so we could have gmod
>>738213810>The foreshadowingAnon I'm with you, but it's not even a "twist" that's "foreshadowed", it's just outright said multiple times.
Why didn't the UNSC just steal like five Carbines and win the war with those
>>738202141the only criticism 90s boomers seem to have is that you're limited to 2 weapons
Because you can play three campaign maps again, but backward.Truly an evolved FPS experience
2 should've been entirely about the arbiter, I don't care about mr gaylo
>>738214752Arby is insanely underutilized in 2.The whole Schism happens offscreen despite having a character that could have been tied up in the middle of it, there was literally one scene of the Sangheili being slightly upset with the Prophets then the Covenant explodes between levels.
>>738202682>that hyper aggressive obvious autoaimcombat has... evolved.
my favorite part of halo is the funny jar jar binks aliens
>>738206973I will never forgive Halo Infinite for what it did to Fem-Spartans
>>738202682also it looks like you're playing Ruby's mod which makes Halo go from a 2/10 to a 5/10
>>738202346I feel like these are the only things that Halo popularized. Like are there any games that you would call a Halo clone?
>>738217490the melee button was in Duke 3D
>>738217659I guess, but the boot wasn't really something that was a part of combat. It was just there to break open vents and garbage cans.
Its funny how early /v/ shat on halo for being superior to PC FPS shooters back in the day but now bungie halo is now being looked back on as the pinnacle of FPS games while the boomer uncslop FPS games are seen as outdated/v/ PC uncs lost. Console CHADS won and changed the industry forever. Pic related
>>738218358is MS paying you to make constant threads about this or what? halo nostalgia feels so fake and gay lolreally forced IP
>>738218358cod 4, MW2, Black Ops, Halo Reach and Halo 3 were some of the biggest games back in the late 2000s, early 2010s broccoli head. Everyone played themsorry you missed kino cause you grew up with live service gacha slop broccoli bro

halo 2 > reach > odst = halo > halo 3
>>738203265>>738209970Halo 2 does have a more imbalanced sandbox, but in every other respect it's superior to CE>Better gunplay>better movement>better single player missions>much better story, writing, and worldbuilding>better soundtrack>better multiplayer maps>online>>738206339Quarantine Zone indeed sucks, but Gravemind is amazing, acquire taste>>738206456The Didact is the least shit part of 4's campaign though>>738217134Female Spartans looking super different from the men never made sense, what Infinite did is good. If you want them to have big asses, they could do what Reach did and give both the men and women big butts (though Reach also made the women too different in other ways)
>>738217490These three things are what define halo’s gameplay. The trifecta of hip firing, a dedicated instant grenade throw, and a dedicated melee button. But for some reason schizos got up in arms about halo 5 having advanced mobility despite it still having the trifecta. The closet game I think of that resembles halo is splitgate, but it replaced grenades with portals, so even it isn’t really a halo clone. It also lacks vehicles, which I feel is another element needed to become a true halo clone.
>>738219854These play nothing like halo
>>738202141This still has more seamless on-foot into vehicle combat than the vast majority of shooters.>Enter and exit animations>Not immune to damage while in the vehicle >Vehicle physics are logically sounds when compared to the on-foot physics, it doesn't suddenly feel like you're playing a different game>Vehicle driving physics are incredible fun and intuitive, with a satisfying bounciness that avoids that horrible "glued to the floor" stiffness of other shooter vehicles
>>738223108and despite all this /v/ will say it doesnt count and doom/quake is better
>>738222456Halo 2's animations all suck.
>>738202346And personal shielding.
>>738224840I wouldn't say it's got obviously better animations then CE, but I wouldn't say they were obviously worse either, and they definitely didn't suck
>>738225204The weapon animations were so lively in Halo 1. Compare shooting the pistol and having it recoil in your hands compared to the BR's little wiggle. Or even just the melee animations across all weapons.
>>738202141Probably the first actual fun shooter that you can still play today because it finally invented the feel good loop of running around shooting and punching things. Damage/vehicle impact had weight, and enemies/allies had intelligence. I mean just hopping in the hog and driving off a cliff as your ally shoots guys with a 50 cal was fucking mind blowing.
>>738210339For the last fucking time, HL 1 and 2 have god-tier opening cinematics. Also a couple of neat locations like Ravenholme. But as a moment to moment game both are quite boring. Valve really should have done more walking sims with the same vibes. Able to pick stuff up and throw things at enemies as the game throws interactive cutscenes at you, basically what Alyx became, but not a shitty VR game.
>>738202141They should name that shit GAYLO.You know who plays that shit? GAY NIGGAS.
>>738222734They have dedicated melee and grenade inputs
Halo is the most versatile shooting game on existence. It’s gameplay trifecta, fun physics, seamless vehicle combat, and sandbox elements allow a plethora of vastly game modes and player sizes to exist in its multiplayer mode. Sadly, zoomies and PSissies will never acknowledge this.
>>738202141-tactical combat-one button press grenades-decisions to be made between guns and grenades-decision for the guns carries weight across entire missions-vehicles commonplace-reactive friendly and enemy ai-splitscreen multiplayer including co-op-Console
>>738225891Not what people mean when they say dedicate inputs. They don’t play the same. Grenades in those games are on cool down or used infrequently. Melee is also more of a glory kill execution button than a melee you use freely.
>>738226443the melee stopped being fun with halo 2. it even pulls you towards enemies like those glory kills.
>>738210339everything about half life looks fucking lazy, generic, boring, and soulless. the characters, environments, enemies, everything. i never understood the appeal of that game and why people could be such rabid fans of it. the charm of halo isnt just the game itself but the world it made is actually interesting and cool with things in it that will constantly make a new player say "thats fucking sick." who cares how "tightly designed" your game is if every aspect of it is a snorefest? it was a generic protomovie game like most of what a modern AAA game is today which people are totally tired of because theyre boring and dont feel like real games worth paying money for.
>>738203040Games playing at super high FPS helps a lot too.
They took combat, and they added an annoying nagging blue bitch scolding you in your ear every 5 seconds making snappy one-liners and other sarcastic jibes
>>738227032you remind me of a halofag i know that got filtered by smashing the vent covers in hl1
zoomies had to be there
>>738227121cortana is hot but idk what they were thinking by just making her sound like a white woman
i tried to play this game but i found the mission where you have to use the sniper so annoying. the one where its dark and its hard to see anything. that mission is too frusturating and i gave up.
>>738227294That level sucks but the sniping section is the only good part about it
>>738217490Splitgate
>>738227342it's the most interesting setpiece in the game then it just turns into purple identical corridors. fuck halo.
It wasn't "evolved." They tossed in some good features, but it was really a pretty average shooter. In fact, it was nothing but Microslop and we should all forget about it.
Halo: Combat Bussified
>>738226443they do play the same
>>738228494They don’t
>>738216251You could always play it on PC without the aim assists since 2003
It mind broke boomers and is still mind breaking them to this day. They literally can’t fathom a game that involves more than strafing left and right and pressing one button to shoot kek.
>>738229001wrong
>>738230679Nun uh, you’re wrong
>>738202141I can't think of any other fps game with MP at the time that had vehicle physics as good as Halo's, also the tribal drumming music made certain parts that'd be an otherwise average FPS experience into memorable kino moments. Also Halo just felt really good to play, the movement speed, jump height and pacing were just right
>>738202141It became good

there seems to be two camps on halo, because we were all fucking losers back when halo came out because video gaming wasn't a dudebro hobby just yet, that happened about 4-5 years aftercamp 1 was anti-social losers, they hated halo because they didn't own an xbox or didn't have friends and therefore didn't LAN anywayscamp 2 was social losers, they loved halo because they had the ability to play the system-link MP with themthere's literally 0 in between on this
>>738227204i like a lot of old stealth games i dont mind exploring and interacting with the environment, the game is just unappealing from a design standpoint visually. gordon looks like a reddit mod. i dont understand why people act like its a legendary game because its boring. compare the design of the headcrab and the infected people you fight to the flood for instance. compare the design of the alien and human weapons from the games. halo has more soul in it. its just the truth. half lifes signature weapon is a fucking crowbar. halo has the energy sword for its signature melee weapon. if i want to use a crowbar i will play condemned which has way better urban levels to explore and everyday items to use like a fucking crowbar or a brick. the problem with halflife is its supposed to be a scifi game but it goes about it in the laziest bland ways possible.
>>738232864also clarifying my last point here, in reference to the crowbar, condemned is fun because you fully embrace the novelty of using everyday objects as part of its gameplay loop and its at least creative with the way it goes about it since you can use just about anything such as a walking crutch, broken bottle, 2x4 etc then when you get a sword or something you feel like a god.
>>738232648i liked halo 1 and my only exposure to it was on PC at a friend's house, taking turns.i got an xbox and halo 2 a month after it came out
>Quakefag is still seething
>>738211569If Half-Life 1 is overrated then Halo CE is at least twice as overratedHL1 challenges you to read your environment and use it to kill your enemies while taking as little damage as possible in the processHalo CE challenges you to proc your enemies' goofy reactions to grenades and losing their shields to kill them faster, all without worrying about taking hits because of your own shieldIt's like the difference between an old school turn based RPG where you have to take hits and deal with it versus a modern turn based RPG where there's some lame ass dodge or block mechanic that lets you ignore resource management as long as you can press a button at the right timeIt might feel more fun in the moment, but it's shallower and shapes your brain in a way where you'll get filtered by more challenging games because you get too used to casual games' safety net mechanics
>>738222093Broken Butterfly mogs
>>738233318confirmed for never playing the game on anything other than easy mode or maybe normal for a few levels. you dont have infinite grenades and they dont drop so frequently that you can just use them in every fight. that makes no sense. if you play it on heroic mode (which is the true difficulty) you cant just run and gun the way youre describing. youre fighting multiple enemies so its never as simple as shooting one enemy so their shield just magically "goes away" faster than yours so you ignore their hits because the other enemys will try to flank you. if you played like that you would die from attrition losing your health over time.>old school turnbased rpgholy retard i guess that means missing isnt a thing in those games? thats pure rng which by your logic is 50 times as retarded because its just magic negated damage. if the enemy is right up in your face you could argue they should never miss. so its just a crutch to make the game easier.>resource managementthats primarily the shield. the shield is the resource management. you "read the environment" to use cover and use movement to try to avoid the shots like you would in literally any FPS game, and you make calculated risks based on the amount of shields you have left. >might feel more fun in the momenti love old FPS games, but theres nothing wrong with changing it up. I wouldnt say halo is intrinsically more fun than a bunch of "classic" FPS games i like. as a halo fan even i get bored of it the same way i do any game i play too often. but i can say 1000% its more fun than half life is.your last point is also super retarded. i played halo a lot growing up and it didnt stop me from "graduating" to more classic FPS titles. the challenge is still there but you change your approach from the way you would tackle it in other FPS games and thats why its refreshing to play, and why at the time many found it really cool.
