Why did Resident Evil mog Silent Hill in popularity so bad?

SH is definitely worth a replay but not for at least a year because it's very memorable. RE has good gameplay which SH never ever has had so I replayed RE4 as soon as I finished it to try out different gun builds.

Resident Evil on the other hand became an arcade series where you kill enemies to collect credits and buy new guns, the plot is pants on head retarded C-movie tier and no one takes it seriously, they just want Leon massacring hordes, buying new guns and quipping

I didn't call SH "fun", it's an obtuse piece of shit in terms of actual gameplay (all of them were, until they attempted to modernize it somewhat with the SH2 remake) but it excelled in ambiance, sound design, being unnerving and sometimes even creepy. All those things lost when team silent stopped being at the helm. Now it's mostly a westernized piece of shit.

on the psx the two series fell roughly into the same action adventure box, and they both similarly declined into genre horror titles early in the sixth gen but it's obvious in hindsight resident evil was more primed to reinvent itself as a mainstream action hit. the cheesy b movie conventions, lightness in tone, and more explicit videogamey iconography perfectly lended themselves to the game re4 was. even with better arcade talent that resident evil had around it I don't see how you turn silent hill into the phenom re4 was. it's always going to be a moody moderately unpleasent capital H horror game.
